becoming a prison officer is 2nd on mi list of jobs, the 1st being policeman.

The Senior Officer's course in Prisons:-

a) normally how many ppl per batch ah?
b) when does the course starts?
c) how many batches per year?

To me, a prison can be quite a depressing place to work in, especially if intended as a lifelong career.

b) it depends on the training school, it's not fix... once a cohort is goin to pass out soon, the school will then schedule when the next training will be...
c) mostly 2 batches per yr, at times there might be 3... :cool:

I was interested in joining prison as a warden after I completed my contract with the police force. The prison warden salary scale not bad. However, my mrs was against the idea of me working 3 shifts again and she didn't like the idea of me being cooped up with convicts. She always has this mindset that I will beat up the prisoners there and once they are out, they will come and look for me... :slapforehead: :cheeky:

Can't disagree more with some of you here' I've been working in SPS for 5 years now and there's lots of things to be smiling about.

For those of are thinking of joining SPS, you'd be happy to know that your bond does not go into effect until you begin training. In the meantime, you will be placed on attachment in the various institutions and work locations to let you have a feel of the job. If you don't like it, you can resign and you will not have to pay any bond if you have not started training. The attachment is also full-pay.

I think there needs to be continuity in almost all sectors of the workforce, which is why SPS is still promoting their recruitment. Otherwise, attrition will dwindle the workforce and we will face a labour shortage. Smart heads will pre-empt this and devise strategies to prevent such from happening.

anyway i totally agree with your statement, it is imperative that every organization has a consistent and constant of flow of manpower & resources to cover up the gaps.

Especially with the attractive offers from the private sector now, i feel that a career in the civil service isnt the natural first choice of some individuals now compared to last time.

I'm not too sure about career opportunities that are opening up in the private sector. I've been working with my eyes closed to the outside for so long. However, myself and another similar-ranking friend had calculated and we conclude that in order for us to jump over to the private sector, we would have to earn at least double our present salary. This is to cover costs such as transportation (I stay in the quarters), uniforms (outside must buy working clothes, expensive!) and added job responsibilities.

Given these factors, and the volatility of private sector jobs as compared to the civil service, we would opt to keep our jobs.

Anyway if anyone planning to sign on as SPO, the rank doesn't mean much anymore nowadays. Everywhere you turn can see ASP here and there. I talk to some DSPs as if they were my peers (these DSPs have really great interpersonal skills), and certain SUPTS also talk to us POs without all the formality of vastly differing ranks.

I guess this is where we are headed, since we have long tried to "bridge the gap" between POs and SPOs.

my DM who worked as a army officer. he say he also working in prison. did not really know wad he worked as. at first. i thought he talk **** only. cause he always joke around de. den last time when i was rather naughty. after being caned by him. he showed me the pictures of prisoners being caned. you see already. confirm 1st reaction " WAH " and he told me he saw ppl being caned alot of times. he worked for more then 30years. but he told me that within that 30years. he did not seen anyone walking out after being caned. everyone confirm SHOUT de. even the BIGGEST GANGSTER IN SG.

So far, for our local prison authorities, there are many regulations and standing orders in place to ensure that no internal photographs is released to the public. Such photos and articles are governed by I myself have yet to see any photograph of prisoners getting caned which is purportedly taken inside our local prisons. If ever there were such photos circulating, you can bet your bike (and I can bet mine) that our Big Uncle MHA will get to the perpetrator.

Secondly, I really have to say that your DM couldn't be more wrong when he said that even the biggest gangster does not shout. If you have friends working in prison, they will also tell you that there are people receiving 24 strokes who did not even flinch or bat an eyelid when receiving the caning. I've seen with my own eyes.

kena 24strokes. nv even flinch or bat an eyelid? cause they fainted liao or they tahan ? from wad i heard from my DM. he say in his 30years of working experiences. he NEVER EVER SEEN SOMEONE WHO DID NOT SHOUT. he also got share with me that if got prisoners going to get caned. like eg. thrusday they tio cane. mon or tuesday. they dont eat any food liao.

Increase to $300 after 3 years service.

Increase to $350 after 5 years service.

SPOs get no allowances as their salary already high enough. Reside in the quarters like me, and you can rent out your HDB/condo for at least $1000 to $2500 monthly. Sweet!

What PO are you people talking about... PO may refer to both Police Officer or Prison Officer...

Of course we POs (PRISON officers) are never seen working behind our walls, but we certainly do our part in the criminal justice system by rehabilitating them...

The police arrests law breakers, the courts mete out punishment to them, and we simply carry out the courts' decisions while at the same time trying to help them be a better citizen and socially responsible person.

Some of these so-called belly uncles are very highly trained, mind you. I wouldn't say that they are commandos, as commandos have their own set of abilities tucked away in Hendon Camp. Our SPEAR officers have their own unique set of abilities that help them to work within Prisons.

No use knowing how to paradrop when we don't use copters in prison, eh?

Any separate fitness requirements for SPEARS? Do they have to be fit? Or only nid to be trained?

Have fun training. Most of the better trainers are no longer there, e.g. CW Mike, CW Zul. Who they have there are also good lah, but the downside is that they tend to take institutional trainers for C&R, CQDT, UST, etc...

its the basic home team course

for ranks below senior officers, its 8 days.

trg commencement date depends on the number of trainees. Assuming there's enough trainees when you join, the wait could be 2wks or less, or if not possibly longer up to 3mths maybe more. Bond only comes to play once you start trg.

hei guys.. nid help ere.. i applied for prisons on jan wic was a mistake cos i oni ord in mar.. dat tym tot if apply earli aftr ord straitawy cn start trainin.. bt nw on de website dey say must wait for another 6 mths b4 applyin again.. dats way too long for me.. reali wanted to join prisons.. was wf de hometeam 10 day camp laz tym i scdf.. dey recommend me to join.. so nw hw?? is dere any office or sumtin dat i cn appeal to?? thnx guys

you can try giving recruitment a try ... call them and ask

trg commencement date depends on the number of trainees. Assuming there's enough trainees when you join, the wait could be 2wks or less, or if not possibly longer up to 3mths maybe more. passing out parade
3 months ojt
1 week developmental training
then u officially graduate

the bond only starts after ur graduation ceremony..

thnx fer de ans full of sorrow.. btw i was frm ers scdf n attended de hta basic course.. dats whr i gt to noe abt prisons frm de prison trainees.. n oso was always posted to loyang fire post wic laz tym was inside changi prison n made frens wf a few prison officers.. i tink ill try to call dem thru deir recruitment no.. i tink if stil must wait fer 6 mths i tink ill apply fer cnb nxt.. tnx again..
