Well, the question of "hows the bike" is very vague.

To judge something, one must compare it against another. There are many reviews of the bike available in magazines and online.

Of course, real world everyday riding is different from a one day roadtest the journalists do, so maybe one day I will sit down and write a proper review based on my experience.

most litre plus bikes these days in stock form should be able to give you at 16km/l for city riding and more than 20km/l for slow speed cruising (under 160km/h) on highways.

nE0
10-01-2007, 10:19 PM
Oh ya, I mostly ride in stop n go type of street riding, so mileage is around 14km/litre. When I first got the bike it was even worse, 13km/litre.

If I travel more on expressways ie. 50% expressways, 50% stop n go traffic, consumption goes down to around 15km/litre.

NSH cruising with pillion and side panniers, 130-150km/h average, the bike does 16.5km/litre.

Just for comparism, my Ducati 999 does 17km/litre street riding, 19km/litre NSH cruising.

Dear Alvin,

Thanks for your comments. I wish we have more supportive advertisers as our magazine only thrive on advertisers. Unfortunately Suzuki being one of the biggest distributors is not of the opinion of marketing through advertising. I hope this opinion will change as with increased revenues we can bring and afford better coverages and better articles for our readers. I hope you can help voice out the support of a local bike mag as sadly this is the current state and situation (that local bike shops and distributors mostly do not support advertisements). I would love to feature more bike clubs , superbikes , meeting of clubs etc however we do have a bottom line to keep as well due to the lack in revenue. The good news is we are making headway as our readership is increasing and there are gradually but a bit too slowly people who realise the effectiveness of our magazine. I will try to cover yr event if u can confirm the time and location. I hope u can voice our enthusiast support as we are eager to please and be the best bike mag not only in Singapore but the region eventually. Meanwhile Ride safely and Best Regards.

Hi guys i will be order this Fingertip Preload Adjuster Kit again any of you like to get ?

The Traxxion Dynamics Fingertip Preload Adjuster Kit is a simple to install kit that will allow a rider or mechanic to quickly move the fork spring preload adjuster without any tools (plus they look really sweet!!!) These high-quality, CNC-machined, anodized aluminum parts are available for any late model sport bike, and add a real "GP" look to your bike. Available colors are black, blue, red, gold, and silver. Kits come complete with hex key for quick installation. With our new design, you will help to "crash-proof" fork cap. If you should ever be so unfortunate as to crash, and your bike flips over, these caps will take the grinding, and forks are less likely to be damaged.

By all means join in!

Perhaps we should create a ZZR thread? Then all the ZZRs (ZZR600, ZZR1100, ZZR1200 and ZZR1400 ) can come together.

Then again, Kawasakis are rare enough already, so we shouldn't split amongst ourselves too. Just join in the Ninja thread! :thumb:

My ZZR1400 is a dealer bike (Evershine), so thats the place to go for spares and other parts. I'm ordering a mainstand from them soon, the usual 1 - 3 month wait applies.

Why would you want to put ZX14 mirrors on your 10? Its nearly 20cm wide. The ZX12 mirrors seem identical, but with shorter stems.

The stock mirrors on the 10r are horrible, all i see are elbows. It's either 1400 mirrors and modifying the mounting points, or suzuki gs500 mirrors which bolt straight on but don't look as nice at the 1400 mirrors.

bro, the 12 or 14 mirrors will not look nice on the 10. will look odd. why not try r1/r6 or gixer's instead? for gixer's i think can straightaway import the mirror and the stem to the base of kawa's mirror holder. i did a rough measurement and looks feasible. gixer's stem is longer so the view problem will be solved. i am looking into this now cos i also have the same problem

This could be the one bike to rule them all! And it does makes the other manufactures loose sleep. My only gripe with it is that the speedometer and fuel consumption calculator is in miles and not in kilometers.

You can switch the fuel consumption display between MPG, KM/Litre and Litres/100 KM.

This bike shares many components with the ZX14, and contains many the ZX14 should have.

The meter itself is either MPH with small km/h digits, or large KM/H ones. Depends on which country the bike is destined for.

Hi Neo,

From the pictures that you've posted, it seems like the instrument panel is from the ZX14 leh, correct? The handle bar looks like sport bike version (triple clamp) hor?

My current ride also have similar speedometer display. The larger icons are in miles and within it, the kilometres in smaller "fonts". So hard to read the kilometre one. I hate this kind of display.

Wish list for the GTR 1400 Kawasaki Concours 2008
1. Digital Speedometer
(with optional back light colours to choose from...hee)
2. Onboard GPS
(or slot to install)
3. Airbag
(similar to Honda's Goldwing version)
4. Dry clutch
(or at least with different oil reservoir from the engine. I don't fancy the idea of engine oil bathing with the clutch and gear)

From what I see, the instruments are identical to the ZX14, , just that the digital display has more functions (Kpass, tyre presure etc).

Gotta wait and see the real thing first. What bike are you riding?

The GTR has more torque EVERYWHERE compared to every single other bike of the same category. Honda STX, Yamaha FJR, BMW K1200GT. At only 3500rpms it produces as much torque as an FJR at peak torque (7000rpms).

If you want a fast tourer, look nowhere else. If you want a fast sports tourer, try the ZZR1400.

I think the heat issue shouldn't be much of a problem because

1) You cannot expect to have essentially a Honda Civic engine between your legs and not have much heat. All that power = heat, and that heat has got to go somewhere.
2) You should be wearing long pants
3) Once on the move its not that bad
4) Riding this bike in the middle of a cloudless afternoon in a jam packed CDB area is just asking for curled leg hairs and bbqed balls.

ramen71
20-01-2008, 11:24 AM
the heat not as bad as R1 or Blackbird at same situation right..

Review from other C14 owner group.

Plus:
1. Smooth: Very very smooth and quiet. I have been riding a 99 Honda ST which I really really like (still own), so I was hoping the C-14 would be as smooth and it is.
2. Power: Lots and lots of power and nice application in the power band. I have been taking it easy in the break-in period, not going reving over 5000 RPM in the gears, once to 6000 RPM. It is Red-lined at 10,500. I varied the RPM on the road 3-4-5000 shifting gears while cruising. Kaw is famous for its "gear-head torquely motors" and this one is no slouch.
3. Trannie: The six speed is very nice, with the 6th as a overdrive, 75mph/3500RPM. Some bikes you ride and you are always looking for the next gear to shift up. Not the C-14, the power band is wide enuff to be in a gear lower and not noticed it. So, I could ride along at 60 MPH, shift down from 6 to 5 to 4th without it being too noticable.
4. Kipass: Seems to work fine and is kinda kewl. To unlock the luggage bags, you either have to remove the Kipass key on the steering console or remove the key from the pocket key fob. I haven't fine tuned my key/Kipass arrangement yet. You get three key fobs and it you loose them, you have to change out the computer box, so I am told, big $$$.
5. Cornering: Very nice and stable in the corners and twistees, a non effort to execute.
6. Instrumentation. Typical of the new techno stuff, lots of buttoms to push and get memorized. (tuff to do when you are older) But, it was very readable and clear, day and nite. Air pressure sensor readouts kinda neat, nice feature
7. Luggage Bags. Nice and large, nice closing system and locks. Very easy to take off of bike and re-attach.
8. Mirrors are ok, somewhat blocked (maybe 35-40%) by the luggage bags.

Negatives.
1: Windshield:( I am not a whiner) I will start with my "Biggest Rant", the friggin G-D "Windshield". Are you listening Kawasaki? You missed it totally....understand ...totally. Why didn't you go to an Honda ST or Yamaha FJR and take some measurements prior to the design??????? They have it right....!!! The windshield is more like a "Crotch-Rocket" windshield that extends. Whewww....!! Ok, I will explain. I am 5'9", very average for height. When the windshield is fully extended up, I get all the wind, turbulance buffeting, wind noise, right in the face. (as an ole racer, I wear a helmet) It is so bad, that is better to leave the windshield lowered and take the wind in the face, without the turbulance, buffeting and noise, at least the wind is steady. Being a cross between "Shade Tree Mechanic and Inganeer" I think the windshields needs 4-5" added to the height. But, that might put it too close to the riders face, because the upward back extension rake angle of the windshield. Really, I was so pissed, I had a passing thot of taking the windshield off, breaking it in half and tell the dealer to give it back to the Kawasake rep. This windshield needs a "Fix" Kawasaki. Are you listening????? Honda products are very well engineered and designed, sorry Kaw, I'm the customer, buck stops here.....!!!
2. Seat Height: As I mentioned above, I am 5'9", 29" leg inseam and I can't sit on C-14 and be flat footed with both feet. I am about 1" to 1 1/2" inches short (story of my life)of reaching the ground with both feet. The seat height is a little high for me. I am sure Corbin seats will have a fix.
3. Tank Storage compartment: It is cheaply made, the door is floppy, the hinges and springs are weak. Looks like something you would find in the bargin bin at "Wally World or K-Mart" for lack of a better description. The tank compartment humps up and interfers with a magnetic tank bag. On the left and right side of the windshield/tank area is room for storage compartments, that would have been nice to have a couple storages bins.

Features of C14

1.Shaft Drive
A real benefit for the long-distance traveller - virtually maintenance-free shaft drive.

2.Electric Screen
Deflect wind and weather with the electrically adjustable screen, reducing fatigue so you can ride further and longer.

3.Security in Mind
KIPASS* (Kawasaki’s Intelligent Proximity Activation Start System) increases your bike’s security wherever you travel.

4.1400 GTR Motor
Precision engineering is the secret of the 1400GTR’s extraordinary torque delivery across the rev range. Variable valve timing optimises torque for blistering acceleration, yet still delivers smooth power for high-speed cruising.

5.12v socket
An all purpose DC socket with a capacity of 70W makes it easy to use electrical accessories.

6.ABS Braking
Linked petal brake discs all round, and radially-mounted front calipers allied with ABS, ensure composed braking under all conditions.

7.Tyre Pressure Sensor
No need for regular tyre pressure checks. Sensors deliver that information straight to the instrument console.

Look at it this way, you're getting the power of a ZX14, with panniers, touring screen, shaft drive and more gadgets, for only 1.5k more. Thats very good value for money. My rack + panniers alone costs $900+! Not to mention scottoiler and touring screen...

Hi Fellow Bikers,

Happen to read about NHTSA recall on the 2008 Kawasaki Concours 14 (Problems with Saddlebag latched & rear carrier platform) in May 08 issue page 118. Feel the need to share with you guys as not to compromise safety as we are all 2-Wheels Buddies.

Recall No. 08V047000
No of bikes involved: 4645
Problem: The pivot pin for the latches that secure the saddlebag can break if force applied to either saddlebag such as in the event the bike fall over while parked or if saddlebag improperly attached. Continue use with latches broken can result in saddlebag come off while riding
Remedy: Dealer will change to reinforced latches.

Recall no. 08V048000
No of bikes involved : 3611
Problem: The rear carrier platform could break if Kawasaki genuine luggage system is installed on carrier platform and a passenger leans on it. The luggage system could become detached while riding.
Remedy: Agent to check and change if necessary.

I hope these recalls only affect the 08 Kawasaki Concours in the USA and not those coming to our shore. Maybe fellow Concours owners can check with your local agent.

Ride Safe!

I got it from Loois motor, but I have to say that for a bike this expensive that you would get some attention or customer service, i got none!
So, I am already not keen on servicing my bike there.

Having said that, I ordered the bike early April so count 6 to 8 weeks for delivery, i am tired of calling them to find out when the bike will be ready so, i ll just wait.

Last night I got a call, and they told me that the speedometer was in miles, after telling them countless time early April that I did not want that to happen, it still did...do you think they care, nooooooooo.

Finally, OTR is 29.5 K

Well, I guess most of the bike shops operate this way, take it or leave it attitude as there is always someone else out there who is willing to make the purchase.

May i ask who did you deal with?
Did you pay any deposits when you ordered the bike?

frenchbiker
14-05-2008, 07:27 PM
I dealt directly with Mr. Lee, the general manager.
I put 1000 SGD down to secure the bike.

I just picked it up this evening, i am like a little kid!!

Pretty impressive and intimidating machine once you sit on it, but it handles so well, cornering far easier than one would think.

The main thing i noticed is the amount of torque at low RPM, pretty amazing.
Anyway, just the beginning, i ll post later after the engine break in.

got the bike on wednesday and last night a lorry backed into it, luckily i was across the street, I screamed so loud that he heard me and stoped.

But a bit too late, the bike was on the side stand with the locked handle bar, so he dragged the bike for 50 cm and then stoped when he heard me.
Believe it or not the bike did not fall, how stable is that!!! but the aligment was off, of course, the bike bulance brought it back to loois and they checked the fork alignment and fixed it this morning, asides from that no damage.

I was lucky in my despair, but I am sure that if i had not been there bike would have falled and maybe run over, after just one freaking day!!!! So pisssssssssssed.

At least the driver was in shock, probably I screamed too loud, but paid upfront for the bike bulance and the cab back home.
And he will pay for the repair, nonetheless now I am so frantic on where to park the damn bike.rrrrrrrrr

Hi Ramen,

No engine break in yet, I travel too much, i am close to 800km now but never pushed it more than 5000 rpm, soon i will be able to go to 6000 RPM until 1500km.

So far great handling, I am amazed at the stability of this heavy bike at slow speed or cornering, you could easily do 30 sec on the TP plank test!
I like the riding position not too aft, but comfortable.

The only problem i see is the wind screen even in the high position it is way too low, and creates turbulances, it is better in the low position.
But a touring higher screen ordering from Europe, will be probably on the expense list when i start touring around. Kawasaki probaly figured out to suck more money out of its owners...

For the rest, great bike to own.

Hi frenchbiker,

What is the fuel consumption like for your Kawasaki GTR?

frenchbiker
14-06-2008, 01:54 PM
Hi frenchbiker,

What is the fuel consumption like for your Kawasaki GTR?

I have only done city riding, so far computer indicating 6.3l/100km but it goes down to 6.1 after riding on the expressway for 20 min or more.

I am sure in 6th gear which is an overdrive you can go below 6l per 100 km on highway touring as the RPM stays in the low 3000 at 130-140 km/h.

So for such a big engine i am more than satisfied with the fuel consumption.

frenchbiker > are you refering to your fuel calculations, or the indication on the instrument panel?

6.3Litres/100km translates to 15.8km/litre.
6Litres/100 KM translates to 16.6km/litre.

From my experience, based on my calculations during refueling, I get around 14km/litre in City riding, 15km/litre if I travel on expressways more often, and 16-18km/litre when I tour, depending on how fast I travel.

And the bike's display shows an average of 15.8km/litre nomather how I ride, even after I reset it. So its not very accurate. the 'real time' fuel consumption meter is somewhat more accurate, but I feel it doesn't refresh fast enough.

No i don't use the gauge i leave it on tire pressure, as you said it is not very accurate.
My last count was 300km for 19 liters so roughly 15.8 km to the liter.

But i have yet to break in the engine, so no more than 4000 rpm for the first 800km.
Consumption will be likely to be like yours when i start pushing it, nonetheless, i am still happy with it.

Are you also riding the same 1400 GTR?

No, I'm riding the ZZR1400, but with boxes so aerodynamic drag should be around the same.

Sometimes I wish I had the GTR engine though, I rarely rev above 6000rpms and thats where the GTR has more torque than the ZZR1400.

Two issues on this bike and only on accessories, engine wise fantastic.

1. wind screen is too low even in high position, turbulences at the head level if you don't duck.

Disadvantage on sportbike.
every 500km need to lubricate chain(never install scottoiler)
carrying luggage is an issue as no saddle bag.
riding posture tiring for long distance.
need top up fuel every 240km/h depending on speed.
need squat down for high speed above 180km/h.

think should not be a problem, with its 190 rear, traction is good during corners...
my rear tyre has about 1inch left to the edge, and i'm still running-in... :D

How many kms have you ridden your GTR? Have you toured already in Malaysia? What top speed have you reached?

I am going myself to Malaysia this week end to push it a bit, but i m still in the 6000 RPM, so 500kms more then all the way to the red zone!!!

yes it can contain a full-face helmet inside...
the size is about that of STX and FJR, but the weight is a killer when stationary...
but once on the move, even in low speed, its very agile...
:D

The weight is one thing tat have kept me away from tourers . N having to balance tis heavy bike on juz the tip of my toes isnt going to be fun . Esp wif a pillion . :weep:

i'm still in the 3-4k zone... travelled just below 300km...
touring wont be anytime near for me... :sian:

Well, the ZX14 sits somewhere between the GTR and ZX10. Just sporty enough to hang with sportbikes on trackdays, but comfortable and capable enough to travel with full tourers.

But comparing the prices of the ZX14 and GTR, suddenly the ZX14 seems overpriced. I love my bike, but sometimes I wish mine had a GTR engine and overdrive gearbox with shaft drive. :P

does your engine gets too hot???

I installed a 2nd fan on the right side, so the temperature does not go above 3 bars.

With only one fan the temperature will go up to 4 bars. never had it blink H before, but I don't want to try that.

Hi..where and how much did u get ur 2nd fan from?
to install it, is it easy and fast done by the mechanics?

Bought a 2nd hand radiator fan off a ZX6 on eBay. Installation requires removal of radiator and some elbow grease to figure out how to position it so it does not contact with header pipes and cam covers.

I don't know about the GTR, but the ZX14 fan is unable to maintain the bike's temperature in stationary traffic, even in cool evenings, let alone blazing hot afternoons.

This week was damn hot and i did one hour within the CBD at snail pace in the traffic but the fan handled perfectly i have never seen the temp more than 3 bars and as soon as i pick up speed on clear path it goes back to 2 bars, it is a bit hot at thighs level though but what else can you expect with such a big engine between your legs!

Hydraulic Camchain tensioner

Cons :
- Possibility of spring back under sudden deceleration
- 'rattling', overly loose tension during cold starts.

Theres just a tiny, weak wire-clip holding back the mechanism. If this fails, the cam may go out of sync, bend a valve or worse, destroy the whole engine.

http://i1.ebayimg.com/03/i/000/e1/7e/8778_1.JPG

I didn't like the way the camchain rattled during cold starts, and the time taken before the noise goes away seems to be getting longer. So, taking no chances, I changed to an APE manual Camchain tensioner ($120 from your favourite mechanics, or cheaper from eBay)

20 minute installation, just need to loosen right side fairing. For best results purchase a 50cent O-ring, don't re-use to original one.

My bike is 25,000kms old btw.

this baby has panniers that swallowed my xtra large agv helmet with room to spare. so other helmets, shouldnt be an issue unless its a weird shape or design.

but the weight, good lord, on a level surface, back paddling took quite some effort. wonder what happens if u park head in to a lot downslope???

Neo, uve own the zx for sometime, any issues on spares or problem fixing?

the usual chant with the local mechs that kawa is the last jap brand to buy due to availability of spares and that its not easy to work on, is it true?

do u DIY mostly on your bike or is there a preferred workshop?

My first servicing went off without problems, was able to get all the nessesary gaskets without needing to order in.

Stock spark plugs are $36, each, so I use Denso Irridium. $88 for 4.

Stock front brake pads are $250 per set (8 pads), but you can get cheaper aftermarket ones for around $180. (EBC, Braking etc)

For me I DIY what I can, usually minor things. Biggest thing I've did is to lower the radiator to re-wire my fans. But major servicing its better to go to a well equipted workshop.

For any spare parts, always plan and order well ahead, like one month before the mileage is due.

tks for the breakdown on pricing.

so its not a case of just rocking up to the workshop and doing a service on the spot.

u mentioned gaskets, where are these for??

It is true that major parts for kawa are on order only, and the best is like Neo says, order 1 month prior to due maintenance if you need it.

The market for high powered bikes Kawa is so small in Singapore that none will stock for any parts or accessories. Only on order, but that is not a surprise and Loois also told me that.
Just anticipate correctly and you would limit your down time, if you get into an accident then you would have to wait for awhile for your bike to get fixed.

For our concourse 1400 GTR, only a handful in Singapore, so yes for the parts we will have to wait...

You need to replace the cam cover gasket when you check your valve clearances.

Mines $28,000. The significant difference between 2006/7 and 2008 models is in the amount of restriction in lower gears, not the overall power output.

The 2006/7 models are easily derestricted to give an even better response than the 'improved' 2008 model.
