my mum is khek, my dad is hokkien...but both of them speak in cantonese...

hokkien to natural to quite a lot of us...so i didnt have to learn from my dad...

cantonese is something i learnt over the years although im not cantonese..

went to guangzhou....spoke to my hairdresser for 3 hours of solid cantonese..was a real struggle..

then i knew my cantonese was not up to scratch...

我 - ngor
他 - ta
巨 - hui (not exactly this chinese word, need to add a "人"字旁 - means "him")

有 - yao (same writing but without the 2 horizontal strokes inside is "mo" as in "don't have" - only seen in cantonese writing, not sure is "chinese" word or not as i dun know the hanyu pinyin to check electronic dictionary)
没 - mood
无 - mo

是 - si/see
的 - teck

食 - sek
吃 - yat/had (seems to have 2 pronunciations as well)
饮 - yum
喝 - halt

有得顶 - (note the 有 is without the 2 horizontal strokes inside) mo tak teng as in cannot be bested

一个人 - yat kor yan (may be pronounced as yat kor yarn where kor and yan are 1 tone higher, depending on the sentence structure)

i kinda think hum ba-lang/su ma are not exactly one of those traditional cantonese words. i could be wrong though. may be deviated from some local dialects just how how our market (巴刹) was derived from the malay word pasat. try using them to guangzhou or hong kong folks and see if they understand.

fyi, if you watch hk productions and hear the word "see tor" or the signboard saying 士多, it is not a "traditional" cantonese word. it is hong kong specific. it was sound-derived from the word "store" which is our mamashop.

Eehh, it does not mean you are 100% if you are from Hong Kong. HK is a mix of different dialect groups. Cantonese is their spoken language but may not represent their dialect. Only if you are from Guangzhou, then you can consider urself a pure Cantonese.

Why I know, My family moved from Guangzhou to HK , then to SIngapore. BUt does it really matter? We are all citizens of the world. All Chinese unite.

Wow, that's surprising...

My grandmother (cantonese dialect) once told me that the way Singaporeans speak cantonese is the same way Singaporeans harbour the usage of Singlish:

Singlish vs proper (ang moh) English
can be considered somewhat like
Singaporean Cantonese vs pure (HK?) Cantonese

For me, I feel that it's better learning how our local Singacantonese people speak the Cantonese language despite the fact that as members of the Singaporean culture those Singacantonese people borrow a lot of words from the languages of Singachinese and Singlish -- I believe this is one of the reasons why it isn't pure Cantonese.

Pure HK cantonese is quite high-level to me...It's more like going to China to learn proper chinese, and to finally speak it, with no allowances of rojak-type Chinese/cantonese + English language that we've grown accustomed to.

I'd say, let the "condemnation" continue. As long as we can convey what we want to Cantonese people, ni goh hai gao dim lo.

(By the way, I think it's called prejudice, not condemnation)

adrient
06-08-2006, 01:36 AM
Well, I personally look at it as EVOLUTION.

Ever wondered why there are so many dialects in the world. In China, even tho the main genere or official language is Mandarin, the number of dialects here are numerous, even neighbouring provinces have different local lingo. Some are quite similiar to each other, while others are completely different.

Take Fujian for example, we would assume that they would speak Hokkien (as affectionately known in SG). But they have at least 3 different versions of hokkien that I know of. (Sha Xian Hua, FuZhou Hua, FuJian Hua.) There is definitely more depending on which region of the Fujian Province you come from.

So its not entirely surprising that our own lingo evolved in Singalish and SingaCantonese...In the end, as long as we can understand each other, who cares if I'm speaking SingaCanto, China Canto or HK Canto? Right?

just my 2 cents worth :cheeky:

Hey, can I ask you a question?

When I asked my grandmother which was appropriate: mat yeh or meh yeh, she concluded that the first one was common in everyday speech.

When I went to an online dictionary, they had those 2 entries.

So my question is thus far: Which one should I use?

Hi redbeacon,

I think both phrases are acceptable. :cheeky: but since your granny is using "meh ye", that could be the more 'traditional' phrase to use?

As I'm not cantonese, I am just sharing what I know. Hope the Cantonese experts can come in and comment :cheeky:

I am half Cantonese. Dad is, mum teochew. Can speak a little but always like the language a lot. Manage to speak a lot when I was a kid but when my grandma pass away... I didnt have the chance to practice anymore. When to HK last year... still manage to smoke my way through but... cannot last very long before they knew it. hehe...

My dad's can speak Hokkien and Cantonese, but my Chinese dialect descent is Cantonese.

However, I primarily speak English at home and at work, and to top it all off with some years of being in the United States, I found Cantonese a bit difficult to pick up so my sketchy Canto is usually from overhearing the occasional conversations between my grandmother and my Dad.

Just like my grandmother said, zhung man yao gong dong wah hai 差唔多 mah...Man man hok loh. :P

oh my goodness, the first few pages contains a lot of X rated cantonese. :giddy:

the dialect is suppose to be very refine. it is the only dialect that has a corresponding pronunciation to every mandarin word and more, that's why the HK songs' lyrics in chinese that cannot really correspond to their spoken language. some cantonese words have very ancient chinese root.

企 - kei, meaning stand.
渠 - koei, means you.
咸(巴冷)- ham pa lang, means all, especially the word ham, was used in Wen yan wen
走 - chow. Unike the mandarin version, this means run. However, in ancient chinese, this is used as run as well.

by the way, the vulgarity tiu-nia-ma actually has a very strong nationalism behind it. In 17th century, there was a eunuch Ma Shi Ying who brought down the Ming Dynasty. The cantonese thus said f**k u as f**k that Ma...

Cantonese is ridiculously difficult. Nobody seems to agree on exactly how many tones it has. Some people say 7. Some say 9. And some say over 11, referencing so-called silent tones. Sorry, but if it’s silent, it’s not a tone. But the insistence on the existence of these so-called silent tones only ups the ‘cool factor’ of Cantonese. If you can master it, you’re pretty much an unstoppable language learning force.
