All,

As you are cleaning, mending, and shopping for the Lunar New Year festivities, so too is the SPCA shelter staff. The shelter managers have drawn up a list of New Year gifts for the dogs, cats, and small animals in the SPCA adoption kennels. If you might be interested in sponsoring a gift or two for these homeless animals, please see the wish-list here: http://www.spca.org.sg/announcements/announcement.asp#2

There is something to fit everyone's budget -- from $2.50 nursing bottles to 1 special animal weighing scale at $1,228.50. Feel free to sponsor one item or a variety of items. As well, partial sponsorship is terrific -- example: $30 towards the $1,228.50 weighing scale, $25 towards cats, etc.

THANK YOU for those of you who donated for Christmastime! Last year was the first year we put out this Wish List, and almost everything was fully sponsored! As you can see this year, there are many items the shelter managers are still looking for.

If you want to contribute towards the shelter, you can also just send in a crossed cheque to Attn: Shelter Wish List & indicate you want the shelter managers to pick most-needed gifts for you.

On behalf of the over 1,000 dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, chinchillas, gerbils, guinea pigs, and rats that will pass through our adoption shelter doors over the next 12 months, THANK YOU for your generosity and help in buying Lunar New Year gifts for these animals. These presents will make their stay at SPCA more comfortable while they are waiting on their new family homes.

SPCA School Holiday Activity

Wondering what to do during the June school holidays? If you have an interest in animals or a love of art – or both! – come on down to the Marine Cove Amphitheatre (near McDonalds) on Saturday 9th June. Han’s Art is organizing an art challenge from 9a.m. to 1.30 p.m., for children aged five to 12. The SPCA will be there to add an educational touch to the event – it will be a morning of animal fun and artistic learning!

The SPCA’s Education Officer, Miss Chong Poh Choo, will be there at 12p.m. to give a talk on animal abuse and responsible pet ownership. A mystery animal will be coming along too! There will also be an animal welfare exhibition where you can pick up free pet-care leaflets and brochures so you can find out more about caring for animals. Questions to ask? An Information Officer will be on hand to answer all your queries.

The SPCA is proud to be part of this inspiring event.

Hi everyone
ASD has come a long way since Dec 2000 when she was first established. Through the toil, sweat, and support of everyone, we have been able to continue our mission of helping the stray and abandoned dogs of Singapore and to adhere to our philosophy of no-kill. To date, over 400 dogs have gone from the gutters and the streets to good and loving homes and many others have had respite from their daily suffering.

Through the years, our network of foster homes have become saturated from the accumulative number of dogs that remain with us and are still hopeful of a good permanent home, and as such, we have decided to bring ASD to the next level by setting up the ASD Adoption and Rescue Centre (ARC)

Having just taken over the premises in Lim Chu Kang on the 1st of June 07, ARC consists of 2 wings of kennels back to back . With an optimum capacity of about 54 dogs, one wing will hold the recovery and convalesence dormitories, while the other wing will have the dogs that are up for adoption. Each dormitory consist of 2 open kennels with a little run area in which 2-3 dogs can stay comfortably, and have social interaction as well (see attached pic)

The next few months will see us being very busy getting the place properly spruced up before the bulk of the dogs are gradually moved in, to ensure they have a nice and clean place to come to. Once we are fully operational, we will be having an open house and inviting you to come and visit the dogs and see how much difference your continued support has made. In due course, we will also be adding a new section to the website to provide more information about the ARC, like the management philosophy, admission criteria etc

We hope to count on your continued support to help us through our initial start up cost of the centre and the first year's operational cost. Modifications and other improvement expenses are currently at $5000 while the centre will cost an estimated $10,000 a month to run and maintain well, which includes rent, electricity and water, salaries for 2 workers, food, cleaning supplies, flea and tick medication and heartworm medication.

We still hope to maintain our current monthly medical and sterilization budget so that no sickly or needy dog needs to be turned away. And true to our policy of channeling all resources possible for the direct benefit of the animals, the daily admininstrative chores will still be brone by volunteers, who will receive no monetary benefits

And so we hope you will embark on this new journey with us by being a part of the Foundation Fund, a fund specifically set up to maintain the ARC. In order to cater for the comfort levels of everyone, we have these various levels of sponsorship of the ARC and her residents :

Founder :
Contributors of $20 to $299 will have honorary status on our Foundation Fund webpage on our website

Protector :
Contributors of $300 to $749 will have their names and a short message of their choice engraved on an icon which will be displayed on the mural wall of the ARC, as well as honorary status on our Foundation Fund webpage on our website. Note that you can combine your contributions together with a few of your dog loving friends and have a collective name like 'Dog Lovers Inc'

Benefactor :
Contributors of $750 and above will have their names and a short message at the entrance of each dormitory for a year, as well as honorary status on our Foundation Fund webpage on our website

Contributions can be sent by cheque or electronic transfer :
By cheque :
Payee Name: Action For Singapore Dogs Society
Address: ASD c/o Ricky Yeo
Blk 402 #06-246
Clementi Ave 1
Singapore 120402

Please write 'For the Foundation Fund' and your email address at the back of the cheque so that we can acknowledge your contribution

By electronic transfer/Internet banking :
Bank: OCBC
Account No: 650322456001
Account Name: Action For Singapore Dogs Society
Branch: Coleman Street
Branch Code: 650
Bank Code: 7339

Do drop us an email at info@asdsingapore. com once the transfer is done so we can acknowledge your contribution

We sincerely hope that all of you will dig in and help build a strong foundation for the ARC so that together we can better help the helpless and downtrodden dogs in Singapore

Best Regards
Ricky Yeo

hey lass i finally went up to noah ark last sat ... they are selling calenders too...

Hi all! Selling 2008 Calendars to help raise funds for Noah's Ark. Not sure if u pple have heard of em' but basically they're an animal shelter who takes in all the abandoned/rescued/abused animals, previously located @ Jln Kayu in SG but due to govt non-support & reclaiming of their land, 'claiming' it was a 'waste', they were forced to relocate. http://www.hardwarezone.com/img/forums/styles/hwz/smilies/frown.gif

Noah's Ark is now situated in Johor, but juz a short 20mins drive away. For those keen to pay a visit, can either pm me for more info or go str8 to their website for more info. I go in whenever I can, now putting in a helping hand to help raise funds for the animals as they need constant supply of money, medicine & pet supplies to be able to continue providing the animals there the safe/secure/loving home they now live in. http://www.hardwarezone.com/img/forums/styles/hwz/smilies/smile.gif

The move proved to be for the betta, the animals now live peacefully with 10 acres of land of freedom, constant supply of food, water & shelter from rain/sun etc. No fear of abuse as well as Raymond is there to keep an eagle eye on em' @ all times. A man worth my respect for the sacrifices he has made for the animals. He now stays permanently in Noah's Ark, the animals' idol & vet in times of emergency when vets cant get there fast enough, eg: In the middle of e night etc. He also does free sterilizing/vet care for the animals ard as the pple there are quite poor so lil'/no knowledge of the important of sterilization for cats/dogs. Kudos to Raymond.

The calendars cost a mere $10 but each & every cent tt goes into it, will feed/save many a dog/puppy/cat/kitten/horse/goat for many many days. Each page will feature a diff cat/dog & behind will be their life story.

http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/5904/picture007mb5.th.jpg (http://img520.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture007mb5.jpg)

http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/5025/picture022vw1.th.jpg (http://img518.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture022vw1.jpg)

Pls help spread the word & buy if u can. $10 to us, is juz the price of a 2hr movie ticket, but to a dog, itz his/her meal for the next 7-10 days.

Art Exhibit: BRING IT HOME - Inspirational Works of Dogs
Runs through 12th October, 2007

Bring it Home is a collaboration between Forth Gallery and SPCA to highlight the plights of the pets at the SPCA. With the help of professional artists and hobbyists, this charity art exhibition will raise funds for the animals at SPCA.

Pictures of SPCA dogs were forwarded to our artists and each artist adopted an image. The artist translated that image into a work of art interlaced with the artist's own interpretation and emotions upon seeing those pictures.

More than 15 artists and designers have participated, including Benjamin Puah, Tay Bee Aye, Janice Chin, Arron Teo, Laura Soon, James Tan, Terence Koh, Veronica Jato, Sabrina Sit, Natasha Pat Lim, Ling Tze, Sonas Lim, Yocklem Li, Kok Wai, Noel Ariola Rosales, Urich Lau, Sandra Lee, Lim Boon Eng, Justin Lee, Diana Goh, Biddy Low, Sharon Tan, Zech Goh, Chee Seam and others.

All the dogs depicted in our artworks are actual animals that are up for adoption at the SPCA. You can help by purchasing a painting or adopting a pet. 40% of the sale proceeds will be donated to the SPCA.

For more information, please visit either website below or call Forth Gallery for additional details.

Little help for our wild friends
More funds needed to create awareness of illegal wildlife trade here
Sheralyn Tay

THE sprawling enclosures lush with greenery and tender care will be a welcome respite from the confines of their previous homes — tiny cages and cramped tanks.

But funds for the first rescue centre that will house seized illegal animals set up by the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (Acres), have been slow to come in.

According to Acres president and executive director Louis Ng, the Acres Wildlife Rescue Centre (AWRC) is almost complete and is slated to open in the middle of next month. But it is still in dire need of funds.

The centre has raised $627,000 since October last year and needs another $460,000 to cover operations costs. But while donations from the public, which has donated 46 per cent of the money raised so far, corporations have not been as forthcoming, contributing to about 25 per cent.

"Most (corporations) have declined funding because the project does not fall under their funding criteria or they have an existing adopted charity," Mr Ng said. "We are confident, however, that if the public and corporate (sectors) learn about our predicament, they will contribute to the AWRC," he said.

In spite of these challenges, Acres is determined to continue its efforts and has resorted to taking loans worth $110,000, free of interest, from its members.

"If we don't set up this centre, no one else will help these animals," said Mr Ng.

The centre, which can house up to 400 animals, will provide a temporary home for prohibited creatures that have been confiscated or given up, such as star tortoises, gibbons, pythons and leopard geckos.

At the moment, seized animals are given to the zoo, the live turtle and tortoise museum, or the Chinese Gardens.

But this is not ideal, he said. "They've lived so long in cages, so it is time to live in open air enclosures," he said.

But ultimately, the aim is to repatriate as many of these animals home as possible. For those who are unfit to go home, the AWRC will be their permanent home.

The AWRC will also serve as an educational centre that will raise the awareness of the illegal pet trade.

An Acres survey of 100 shops in 2005 found one in five selling animals facing extinction. And between 2001 and last year, about 4,000 wild animals have been confiscated or given up by the public.

Mr Ng hopes the AWRC will be able to help create the much-needed awareness on the illegal wildlife trade and environmental protection issues.

"We hope that the corporates will play an increasing role in the contributing to this growing movement," he added.

To mark World Animal Day, Acres will be celebrating Singaporean's support for animal protection efforts with a three-day festival from Oct 5 to 7 at The Atrium @ Orchard (beside Plaza Singapura). Log on to www. acres.org.sg to donate or to find out more about the AWRC.

Show the world that “Animals Matter To Me”! 5th to 7th October
Venue: The Atrium @ Orchard (Beside Plaza Singapura), 60B Orchard Road map
Day/Time: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10am to 10pm daily
To mark World Animal Day, Acres will be celebrating Singaporeans' support for animal protection efforts by holding a 3-day animal-themed festival. There will be a photographic exhibition, music, dance, children's activities and a large array of educational exhibits on animal protection issues, along with the opportunity for everyone to find out how they can help make the world a better place for the animals we share it with.

More importantly, we aim to collect 4, 000 signatures for the global “Animals Matter to Me” campaign in support of a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare to be endorsed by governments of the world. This is a call to everyone, worldwide, to recognise all animals as sentient beings, that they can feel pain and can suffer and that we have a responsibility to put an end to cruelty around the world.

Please drop by and show your support, and show the world that animals matter to you!

Volunteers are needed to help with this event. If you are interested please contact charlene@acres.org.sg

Hi all! http://www.hardwarezone.com/img/forums/styles/hwz/smilies/biggrin.gif

Once again, back with fund-raising help for Noah's Ark. 2009 Calendars for Noah's are NOW available!!!! http://www.hardwarezone.com/img/forums/styles/hwz/smilies/bounce.gif

For those who have so generously & kindly helped last yr will noe who I am. For more info pls refer to this thread:

http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/sh...5#post25834525 (http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/showthread.php?p=25834525#post25834525)

For those who are not aware yet, here's a lil info for u guys:

Hi all! Selling 2009 Calendars to help raise funds for Noah's Ark.

For some pics & more info on this yr's calendars, pls refer to:

http://noahsarkcares.blogspot.com/20...lendar-is.html (http://noahsarkcares.blogspot.com/2008/09/long-awaited-noahs-ark-calendar-is.html)

Pls post here or PM me if u're keen to purchase the calendars.

Due to a much heavier workload this yr, I'm afraid there will only be limited locations to deal @, for those keen to purchase via other modes(postage, self-collection etc), pls feel v free to do so as will only be taking a limited no. of calendars on my end to sell this yr, so hurry now before they run out. http://www.hardwarezone.com/img/forums/styles/hwz/smilies/wink.gif

Dealing location will ONLY be @ Bugis, Punggol or Dhoby Ghaut.

A Roof Over Their Heads

As you are aware, the weather these days have been getting more unpredicatable and the rain has been falling harder and more frequently. The canvas roof which had served us well over the last year is no longer adequate as the rains have been lashing even the sheltered kennels leading to the dogs getting sick and developing skin problems

We are compelled to have an extended roof built which will provide adequate shelter to cover the run areas as well and to keep the dogs dry and snug even with the heavy rains

The cost of the extended roof for all 4 wings is $17,000 of which $7000 has been raised. If you would like to help put a roof over their heads, do email us at info@asdsingapore. com or lobby a group of your friends to pool together your contributions !

ASD 2009 Calendars

The ASD 09 Calendar is out at all Cedele, some Pet Lovers Centre outlets and at our weekend booths. A labour of love with heartwarming stories of our rescued dogs who have found their forever home. See the transformation of Carmen the boxer, who was a skeleton when she was first rescued and Oreo the 3 legged dog !

Start an order list at your office or with your friends and we will deliver right to your door step with an order of 20 copies or more ! All proceeds of the calendar will go toward next year's medical budget and the maintenance of the ARC
