Hi All,

I'm trying to sell my number plate ("5555"), and after a lot of enquiries, I'm a little confused about certain parts of the procedure for transferring the registration number from one old bike to another old bike. This is the information I have so far.

The transfer of plate from one old bike to another is a multi-step process. Assume transferring no.plate from Bike A to Bike B. Both bikes must be under the same owner. So...

1. Transfer Bike A to new owner (transfer fee $108)
2. Transfer plate from Bike A to Bike B (transfer fee $1300)
3. (a) Bike A gets a new number from LTA, Bike B's old number is gone
OR (b) Transfer plate from Bike B to Bike A (transfer fee $1300 - only if you wanna swap the plates)
4. Transfer Bike A back to owner (transfer fee $108)

Assuming you're not swapping the plates, total transfers will come to ~$1500.

Note: You can't do both transfers (#1 & #4) in a single day, so you need to come back the next day. Also, this means that the new (temporary) owner of Bike A needs to get insurance for this bike. It's not enough to be a named rider on the main policy, you need a separate policy under your own name.

Of course, you can cancel the policy immediately afterwards, but I'm not sure what the charges are if you can cancel a policy within a week. Couldn't get any useful information from any insurance company.

Would be grateful if anybody could shed some more light on the process, or share some first-hand experience. A few questions here: How does the issue of temporary insurance work, and which companies are the most cooperative in this aspect?
Does your own (existing) insurance policy cover you for riding while the bike is under the other guy's name?
How do you ensure that the new owner of the bike doesn't refuse to transfer the bike back to you? (i.e. he now technically owns both the bike and the plate - what do you do if he just refuses to transfer the bike back?)

Saw some on your posts about your FE plate. My 2cts worth.There are too much cost and hassle involve when you try to swap number plates between 2 old bikes. You should look for buyers who are getting new bike.

Transfer your bike to buyer at $108.00
Buyer buy new bike and retain plate and pays $100.00.
Buyer transfer bike back to your name with the new plate: $108.00.

For temp insurance maybe can ask your motordiam.

I know... but how to "look for" people buying new bikes? I've advertised the plate pretty much everywhere, but I haven't heard from anybody buying a new bike. Any suggestions? :confused:

Yes, it is difficult to find a buyer at these times. I understand you can apply to retain the number for 6 mths. Check with LTA 2molo. Who knows when FZ series run out you will find demand for your plate.

Yes yr CBR will have a new plate.

Just remember to inform the bike shop which are selling u the new WAVE u r retaining yr number plate, they will know wat to do. The fee of retaing the plate is $100.00:goodluck:

what about mine where the old bike is not under my name?
how much to bring the number plate to my new bike? :confused:

You will incur transfer fee plus $100 (retain plate fee).

Bike A transfer fees $38
Bike B transfer $68.

Guys, i m buying a 2nd bike which is Bike B. I want to use my current number plate on Bike B.

So what is the total charges for the transfer of number plates between two used bike ?

If you swap number plates between 2 old bikes it will cost you $2600 excl transfer fee.:cry:

$1300 is not the transfer fees, it is the cost of gettting new number plates. If bike B is a new bike than bike A will get a new plate( scenario simliar to to "Angry")

For yr 2nd question the answer is yes.

Basing on your previous post, I assumed you are swapping numbers between 2 old bikes, the 2 transactions will cost a minimum amount of $2600.00. :sweat:

Ok , now both bike is used bike.

no transfer because u r the owner of both bikes, however like i told u before you must let the bike shop know that u r retaining plate so that they will bid coe under yr name. :cheer:

still $2600 excluding transfer fees. LTA will not issue a new plate to bike A because bike B's old plate is still around, Due to so much cost n hassle involved i dun think anybody has done this before except car owners. :smile:

so is it possible that i can lay up my bikeA number plate and get a new plate on it ? What's the charges ?

basically if you want an old plate on a old bike it will cost min $2600, as far as i know there are no other cheaper way.

Maybe either i buy a new bike or just keep it

For the benefit of everyone, LTA now allows multiple transfer in a single day. So you can complete #1 & #4 on the same day.

I just did it today.
