Freedom is the key to all. The freedom to stay or to leave, to work in harmony with others or to choose a more individual course. The freedom to help in the larger issues or to abstain. The freedom to build a good life or to live in squalor. The freedom to try anything, or merely to do nothing.
Few would dispute the desire for freedom; everyone I have ever met desires free will, or thinks he does. How curious then, that so many refuse to accept the inverse cost of freedom: responsibility.

I have backpacked to M'sia, Thailand and Vietnam. Love back-packing. Economical and fun!
Definitely fun and absolutely economical. Used to backpack back during my school days in Milwaukee in '95. Spent one month making a roundtrip of the US backpacking by train.

Made a few friends over the Internet, told them I'd be coming over, bought an Amtrak Railpass (unbelievably cheap for foreign passport owners) and made my trip with a friend! At places we didn't have friends to stay over with, we bunked at youth and backpacker hostels. Me and my friend stopped over in Chicago, Syracuse, NY, New Orleans, Austin, San Antonio, Tucson, Tombstone, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Costed me under US$1000 for the whole trip. We took photos and kept them with all the ticket stubs, receipts, postcards, pieces of paper and other flat memorabilias we collected during the trip in 6 huge albums. My friend and I went everywhere together. It was the ultimate adventure across a continent, and just the two of us wandering all over a big country.

After the trip, my friend became my girlfriend. Much later, she became my wife.

Moral of the story : Backpacking can get you a wife.

Wow, you certainly get a lot out of the trip!

so you still backpack now with your wife?

Sadly, no.. now working, a bit tough to get time off and backpack. Some more, girls when they become your wife they demand comfort. If you think they're rugged, can-sleep-anywhere type when single... heheh... wait until you tie the knot.. tent-and-campfire types suddenly demand hotel accommodation..

But we do have our interesting adventures elsewhere.. if you know what I mean...

i feel that the term "backpacking" has been misused since their hay days in the 60s...

those were the true backpackers man...nowdays you see 17-18 year old ang mo "backpackers" with credit cards, handphones, deuter bags, teva sandals, timberland raincoats and the list does on...

and their favourite food whilst in a tropical country like singapore and malaysia...MARS BARS, COCA COLA and BANANA...might as well stay at HOME!!!

you ask them to try durians, nasi lemak and penang laksa...they shy away...i remember encounter heaps of them at cameron highlands asking for fried rice everytime...

when i was in europe, it's actually an "IN" thing to tell you mates YOU"VE BEEN TO ASIA!!..but what do they do in ASIA...they lie topless in beaches, smoke all sorts of plants(I've got asked before in malaysia by a canadian backpacker where he can find POT), stay put in guest houses and watch american movies and only hang out with THEIR KIND...

occasionally, you will find that LONE RANGER...usually dun give you a good first impression but when a conversation actually starts...
YOU FOUND A TRUE traveller...one who experience whatever the country has to offer, one who is able to be independent and travel solo yet be social if need be, one who does not comment/criticise the host country.

I always feel that if we visit a country to expect it to be like back home...THEN WHY TRAVEL...
You have travelled to places others have not ventured....You read books that others have never heard of....You see humour in unusual places. And you've always gone your own way. Why, then, should you ride a bike that's like all the rest?

when you travel, you experience, in a very practical way, the ART of reBIRTH

hahahaha.. im nt very sure if i have gone up by merapuh.. i remember i setted off from Teman Negera, n hike all the way to the summit.. n i dont think i remember seeing any 4 step waterfalls... the route we took... got cross at least 5-6 rivers.. a series of hills like one section called 7 hills and 1 mountain... personally to me every hill looks like a mountain.. dat is until we reach the real mountain...

hmmm.. u got spend a nite at the base of the summit.. a rather small piece of open area... is dat merapuh??? well, i remember spending a nite there n set up off very early in the morning to catch the sun rise.. man i can tell it definately worth it to wake up 4am in the morning to try catch the sun rise on the summit of Gunung Tahan.. wat a sight!!!!

it took us 7 days to reach the summit... 4 days up.. 3 days down.. yup i noe abt the tights thingy.. kekekek we dont want any 'butterfly' to develope dont we... kekeke

as for leeches sucking on yr balls... hahahahah well, i have a frd dat kena there.. hahahahahah

very true. especially so for singaporeans. We are so pampered. sometimes when I travel, I heard singaporeans saying, "in singapore, we don;t do like that one...we are better". then go back to singapore loh.

How curious then, that so many refuse to accept the inverse cost of freedom: responsibility.

hahahaha.. im nt very sure if i have gone up by merapuh.. i remember i setted off from Teman Negera, n hike all the way to the summit.. n i dont think i remember seeing any 4 step waterfalls... the route we took... got cross at least 5-6 rivers.. a series of hills like one section called 7 hills and 1 mountain... personally to me every hill looks like a mountain.. dat is until we reach the real mountain...

hmmm.. u got spend a nite at the base of the summit.. a rather small piece of open area... is dat merapuh??? well, i remember spending a nite there n set up off very early in the morning to catch the sun rise.. man i can tell it definately worth it to wake up 4am in the morning to try catch the sun rise on the summit of Gunung Tahan.. wat a sight!!!!

it took us 7 days to reach the summit... 4 days up.. 3 days down.. yup i noe abt the tights thingy.. kekekek we dont want any 'butterfly' to develope dont we... kekeke

as for leeches sucking on yr balls... hahahahah well, i have a frd dat kena there.. hahahahahah [/quote]

well..for merapuh..iits a starting pt..ts quite near to g tahan...its like from the other side..one way.if im not mistaken...tts wat my fren describe to me..i didnt come from dis way...i come the same way as u do...heehe.......the the open piece of area is not merapuh...u definitely took the same route as me....well..for the 4 step waterfalls..u have to go down from g tahan..then at teku...there's a place called teku...u go up again...to get to 4 step waterfalls...it will take around 2 days up n down i tink....i tink u can see the 4 step waterfals wen u walkin up to g tahan...i cant remember where..darn it was so long ago....one of my fren suggesting to me to go again soon...dont know wen.....hehehe...

was thinking about that issue for a long time... when you are working full time. you have the money and if you are jobless, you have all the time but do not have the money....

so how to strike a balance????

but i know a quite a number of people esp japanese and ang mos that actually work to get a saving then quit and go back packing.. then when money is finished, go back to work again and the cycle goes on....

that is possible in those countries. I met a lot of ang-moh who did that. But i think in singapore, we always want to have security and so very few will do that. But I do have a friend who will do that. But if you are a girl, you won;t want to marry a guy who is like. No sense of security.

altho you won't have much money as a student, you can still backpack after making some from your hoilday jobs. I did quite a bit of travelling in that manner.

I have met these hardcore backpackers. They work then quit to bum around and wander from place to place. Some even work at one place then when they run out of money, they seek a temporary job there (usually at backpacker motels & resorts) before moving on to the next place.

When I was in San Diego, I met this Brit who was working there. He said he wanted to scrape enough money to buy a motorcyle and move on to Nevada.

Amazing, these people. Seems like their sole purpose in life is the pursuit of pleasure. No loans & mortgages to worry about, free to wander.

Anyway, this kind of lifestyle suits angmohs very well because.. guess what... white people can find job anywhere easily, so they can get a job in foreign countries whenever they run out of money. First world countries don't deport each other's citizens, and in Asian countries people worship them like gods. Can get job anytime, anyplace. Worse comes to worst, can always get Asian gf and live off them.. damn easy, and Asian gers like it!

Guys like me.. chances are these days they won't even give me visa, nevermind permission to stay 12 months to work & backpack..then probably kena arrested on some stupid suspicion of having links to Osama Laden.

So the only option left is to make enough money before going off on a long break. Some of my friends did that... go off on a 3-month backpacking holiday. But it seems that you can only do this in your early twenties. Coz as you get older, you get loans, have gf/family and get tied down with other commitments... your roots grow longer and go deeper into the ground, making it difficult for you to just pack up and leave.
