Default [Q&A] Driving to Bangkok

Hi guys,

This time will be driving t Bangkok.
Need some guidiance from all the experienced personnel here.

FC for my car is around 16 - 18km/ltr in SG roads. On the NSHW, should be around 20km/ltr?

Speed on NSHW will be around 130 - 140km/hr
Based on my car FC in SG, I only need to topup once to reach the Thai Border.

What is the best timing for me to takeoff in SG based on the above?
I'm thinking of taking off at night, sleep for 6hrs or so after thai border, then head off again.

Anyone who has driven before to BKK from the Thai border, will need your advice on route to take. Have no experience there.

Will be going on 23rd nite this month, anyone driving up this period?

hi bro, thanks for your info.

just some questions.

you only had 1 rest stop from SG to Sadao rite? time from 1.30am to 8am.
what is your travelling speed? I'm planning for 130-140 range, so would like to have the best estimate no. of hrs I reach hatyai.

I planned for 1 rest stop (for petrol and loo), and then all the way to hatyai.

I will appreciate if you can give me more infos on route u took and the timing you arrived at certain checkpoints and the average speed you travelled.

I will go direct to BKK. My longest I can take (driving) will be ard 17hrs like you did I guess. This is estimated, my longest run on bike is 12hrs, with short 10-15mins break for food and loo. I guess, in a car, can last longer hrs as on bike fatigue is worst bah.

Thanks a million. I'm bring 4 on board (including myself, wife and 2 young kids). I'll drive as far as I can, but dun tink can go direct to BKK as my kids will be restless, so, any place you recommend to stop for a day's rest with kids?

Yo madman

u got any map in hand at moment?
the route is straight straight (trong pai!) highway No. 4 till bangkok,
or no.4 > 35 after khao yoi.

I think if u drive straight from hatyai to bkk should be less
than ur 17 hr max I went the exact route/ place as fc3s1
two months back.My laopokai bike did 90km/h still take 12hr +just
to reach hua hin from hatyai...a bit turtle on speed.

I guess if u spend a night at hatyai and move out to BKK best
option. Anyway do factor in sleep and "car-lag"
whole family on tow dun plan drive so long n chiong so fast ah

Don't think anyone will be driving up from Singapore(slightly cheaper and faster to actually fly).... Driving will be a different experience.

Just wondering how long did you plan the entire trip? Seems a bit rush by getting only 6 hours of sleep after reaching the border and then continuing all the way to BKK... safety also another issue with regards to lack of sleep.

Although speeds are slower on Thai roads, they also require more concentration. Speeding lorries, bikes U-turning, unfamiliar signs...

Although BKK is the destination, there are many beautiful places to stop and take in the sights and sounds along the coast via Highway 4...

Enjoy the drive...

It would seem unlikely that you can achieve 20km/litre at an average speed of 130-140kph. You can do a check to confirm your mileage during the early stage of your trip.

Get a portable DVD player, that will keep the kids entertained, so you can concentrate on your driving.

I keep my FC at a modest 16km/hr then. I'll be able to gauge once I hit the NSHW.

which is shorter or a better route to travel on?

map I'll be getting same one as bro fc3s1 using bah, or you have a better one to recommend and get from where?

I'll stay ard hatyai one day before heading off. What's the best time to head off from hatyai direct to BKK?

Once in BKK, I have no worries, since I ride in ard BKK a number of times.

Travelling from hatyai to bkk (based on above) is 12hrs at 90km/hr from highway 4 correct?

I've planned for 9 days, but it can be longer if needed, since both my wife and me are self-employed.

I want to keep the travelling time shorter so my family can relax and children wont be so edgy as well, therefore, would like to know which part etc can travel slightly faster.

Hatyai where is nice to stay? Have Address for me best. I dun need 5star hotel, backpackers hotel is fine too, as long as surround have food and places to walk/shop will do. Let me know how to get there after the boder at Th if possible.

Thanks guys!

Hi Bro,

Route 4 will be better..from hatyai up to Thung song via R4, u r able to travel bit fast.Chumpon to hua hin still okie lah....hua hin traffic bit heavy.
but beware of speed trap. caught by the speed cam at hua hin and fine on the spot. paid Bht 400(discounted on that day) no under table. Normal fine was at least Bht 1k and above.
Before Ratchaburi they were doing flyover so bit messy....evening time have more traffic..guess so.

I think fastest route or shorter travelling time are quite relative like feiray has mentioned.

R4 is major road but still many section cannot chiong at the speed u want, esp for car. From hatyai to chumpon u can chiong a bit faster, toward petcha kirikhan hua hin, road narrow and got diversion. After hua hin also got bridge work here and there. Driving more difficult cos many truckers along that way...u will bound to see a lot of them hit divider or go inside it. I saw so many until lost count....u can realistically use this as a projection on ur ideal time /distance planning to reach BKK.

Start early morning definitely best choice. If u are tired along the way, still can stop over at hua hin (cheap big hotel room next to testco shopping $500b)

Hatyai I stayed in VL hotel. Room big and looks smililar to Lee Garden.
Small Car park guarded. $700b seasonal.

I got gps map, fold map, map book. If u cannot find a good one, find me

Have a great trip ya!...please extend longer to enjoy urselves

hi guys, most likely, I will just stay a few hours in hatyai to rest myself.
then I'll head off direct to huahin to rest for a day before heading ** to BKK.

how many hrs drive to huahin from hatyai? nighthawk, wat is the name of that hotel? 500b seems resonable.

And lastly, how much for toll etc from sadao to bkk is needed? Estimate can also, cos need to change enuff for these...

bro fc3s1 has PM me with lotsa info, thanks alot man!
