Default Fire Cases

I was there at 330am+ saw thick smoke around cecil street. Went to check it out and saw thick black smoke coming out from the ground floor. There was raging fire from OCBC bank from within..

Minutes later 5-6 police car came, together with fire engines, red rhinos... Fire was put out within minutes, however not too sure how the fire can break out at.. 3am? Short circuit? Or over charging handphone?

Surprisely, I did not hear any alarm at all, not too sure if the fire sprinklers were working or not.

I think the MCST committee of The Octogon may have to answer for this...

Anyone working in CBD Area? By the way, if looking for place to rent, I got an office (1060sqf)in Tung Ann Association Bldg, next to Cecil House for rent. Let me know if you interested.

Arrow Man dies after HDB flat catches fire

A MAN asleep alone in a locked Housing Board flat which caught fire on Saturday died about six hours later.

Mr Abdul Aziz Abdullah, 50, also known as David Chuang, suffered second-degree burns all over his body.

He was believed to have been asleep in one of the bedrooms of his eighth-storey flat in Block 933, Jurong West Street 91, when the fire broke out at about 6.20 pm.

None of his family members were in at the time.

A resident who spotted smoke coming out of the kitchen knocked on the door to alert Mr Aziz but there was no response.

Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) officers, who arrived four minutes after the alarm was raised, had to force open the door to gain entry.

Using waterjets, they extinguished the fire within 15 minutes.

But by then, two bedrooms had been partially destroyed and a storeroom had been affected.

An SCDF spokesman said Mr Aziz was conscious when found.

He was taken to National University Hospital, but died from his injuries on Sunday morning, just after midnight.

Neighbours said the slim-built man and his family were newcomers to the block, having moved into the four-room flat about a year ago.

Police are investigating the incident, said spokesman Danny Tan.

Arrow Lift lobby fire caused blackout at Boon Lay block

MORE than 240 households in Block 185, Boon Lay Avenue, were hit by a power failure for nearly eight hours after a small fire damaged the electrical box near the lift landing of the 22 storey-block early on Thursday morning.

The fire broke out at about 4.40 am and was quickly put out by SCDF firefighters who arrived at the scene within five minutes of a call from a resident.

No one was injured, but a bicycle and a discarded chair were burnt. The fire also partially damaged the electrical box near the lift landing, cutting off electricity to half of the 440 units in the block. Residents said power was restored nearly eight hours later at about 1 pm.

The lift landing area was blackened and some workers were seen repairing the electrical wires on Thursday afternoon.

A small group of people who was tending to a funeral wake in the void deck went door-to-door to wake up the ground floor residents and asked them to get out of their flats. They also helped to douse the fire with water.

Madam Cha Moy Lang, 61, who was keeping watch at her brother's wake, said she heard a loud explosion coming from the electrical box, just moments before the fire broke out. Her nephew, Mr Alvin Chin, 23, a Navy regular, quickly called the SCDF while other relatives went to arouse the neighbours.

Mr Sim Wang Ji, 69, an odd job labourer, who lives on the ground floor unit nearest to the lift landing, said he was woken up from his sleep by shouts of 'fire! fire!' from residents outside his flat.

'I tried to open the door and get out but I couldn't because the door knob was very hot,' he told The Straits Times. He went out by the back door.

Police are investigating the cause of fire.

Arrow Fire on rooftop of former Specialist Centre

SCDF fire fighters quickly put out the fire, which broke out at about 11.50am.

A FIRE broke out on Wednesday morning on the rooftop of the former Specialist Centre/Phoneix Hotel in Orchard Road, which is being demolished.

A construction project manager spotted the fire coming from a cooling tower on the rooftop of the six-storey building, next to the Orchard Central building which is under construction.

Thick smoke billowed from the fire site, forcing the evacuation of over 50 workers on the rooftop and in other parts of the building. Over at the adjacent Orchard Central building site, another 100 workers were also evacuated to across the road. No one was hurt.

The fire attracted more than 100 curious onlookers and shoppers who lined the opposite side of the road where Centre Point shopping centre is.

SCDF fire fighters quickly put out the fire, which broke out at about 11.50am.

A building manager said the fire could have started from the infill of the rooftop cooling tower.

SINGAPORE:

A fire broke out at Block 4, Dover Road, around 12.20am on early Sunday morning.

The blaze at the third floor lift landing resulted in a lot of smoke in the corridor.

Officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) evacuated two women from a unit closest to the fire by placing a ladder at their kitchen window.

The firemen also rescued a man and two women in separate lifts after forcing open the elevators.

All five people were unhurt.

Residents from the second to the seventh floor were also evacuated.

Five of them had to be taken to National University Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

To stop the fire from spreading to neighbouring units, SCDF used two fire engines, one Red Rhino and two support vehicles.

The SCDF said the fire was extinguished in 10 minutes and it is investigating the cause of the fire which involved discarded items.

FRUSTRATED residents of an apartment complex on Dover Road complained for a week about a pile of furniture junked outside the building's third-floor lifts.

But their pleas fell onto deaf ears. That was until early Sunday morning when the pile went up in flames, a blaze police have classified as mischief.

'The furniture had been lying there for so many days, yet no one came to clear it,' said Mr Khoo Pek Tee, 68, a retired driver.

The fire, which broke out at about 12.20am on Sunday night, roused many residents of the 182 two-room rental flat block.

But many on the third floor - especially the units near the heart of the blaze - were trapped in their homes by the flames and thick smoke, which blanketed the corridor.

Five residents had to be taken to the National University Hospital for smoke inhalation, according to the SCDF.

One of them was Madam Zainub Ibrahim whose home was closest to the lift landing.

The 44-year-old hotel chambermaid told The Straits Times that she was asleep in the living room with her 10-year-old daughter when she heard people shouting.

But the flames were too intense for mother and daughter to flee by the main door. They escaped by climbing down a ladder placed against their kitchen window by firefighters.

'It was very hot, I could not breathe,' Madam Zainub recalled. SCDF paramedics took her to the hospital that night but she left at 8am on Monday even though doctors had asked her to stay.

Her health, it seemed, was not as much of a concern as cleaning up the damage the fire had caused. It destroyed her curtains and corridor window while the smoke darkened the walls of her home. Two television sets and a DVD player that were placed in the living room were also damaged.

A West Coast-Ayer Rajah Town Council spokesman said the town council would 'expedite' repairs on the common areas of the block.

She said residents are reminded periodically to not dump their unwanted items in the common areas. Cleaning contractors are also told to remove garbage during their daily cleaning rounds.

There is also a free service to remove bulky household trash, she said.

Arrow Fryer causes fire at CC

A DEEP fryer that had been left on apparently sparked a fire at a new cafe in the Mountbatten Community Centre last night.

Only the owner of Cafe Passion and an employee were in the shop when the blaze started in the kitchen. Both were unharmed.

The employee, who gave his name only as Mr Lim, said he had just arrived for work when he saw thick smoke coming out of the fryer.

He alerted his boss and they opened the kitchen windows and doors to let the smoke clear.

They tried to snuff out the flames with an extinguisher but the fire took hold and they ran to the general office for help.

Singapore Civil Defence Force firefighters put out the fire in 10 minutes, restricting the damage to a portion of the kitchen.

The refrigerator and some pots and pans were burnt and soot covered parts of the second storey above the ground-floor cafe.

Arrow Small fire breaks out in Pei Tong Primary School's toilet

SINGAPORE:

There was some excitement at Pei Tong Primary School at Clementi Avenue 6 on Thursday morning.

A small fire broke out in a toilet on the fourth level of the school after a fan short-circuited.

The fire was quickly put out by a staff member, but as a precaution, fire fighters were also called in.

The school evacuated students from the building to ensure that their safety was not compromised.

Police said they were alerted to the fire at about 11.30am and officers were despatched to the scene.

Arrow Kitchen fires a major concern, says SCDF

Unattended cooking fires up 7% last year; rubbish chute fires remain high

EVERY two days, there are three cases of pots boiling over in a kitchen, sparking off fires that burn out homes.

Unattended cooking led to 546 fires last year, an increase of more than 7 per cent over the 509 cases in 2006.

The phenomenon was serious enough for the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) to point it out as a key area of concern on Thursday, when it revealed its annual fire and ambulance statistics.

Kitchen fires can have life-threatening consequences as the flames spread quickly from the stove to flammable items such as wooden cabinets.

An SCDF study of 652 unattended cooking fires that occurred between April 2006 and June last year indicated that almost half, or 48 per cent of the cases, involved residents between 41 and 60 years in age. Slightly over half of them were men.

Most times, fires started while they were preparing lunch.

A total of 3,213, or 67 per cent, of the 4,796 fires last year were in residential areas.

Discarded items that cluttered common areas caused its fair share of damage with 493 cases last year - 64 more than the previous year.

Arrow SCDF concerned about increase in number of rubbish chute fires

SINGAPORE:

Fires in HDB rubbish chutes are the biggest concern of the Civil Defence as they accounted for the largest percentage of residential fires last year.

A large fraction of the 1,199 rubbish chute fires – an increase of 9.1 percent from the year before – occurred during festive periods.

During the Lunar New Year in 2006, 232 rubbish chute fires were recorded. For Deepavali and Hari Raya Puasa combined, there were a total of 124 cases.

Last year, 192 cases were recorded during the Lunar New Year and 117 cases were filed during Deepavali and Hari Raya Puasa.

With the Lunar New Year approaching, the authorities are urging the public to be more vigilant.

Colonel Eric Yap, Director of Operations, Singapore Civil Defence Force, said: "A lot of education has to go into this process. We want to appeal to the public to practise responsibility when discarding lighted materials."

Another concern is fires from unattended cooking, which could spread to other parts of the kitchen.

The Civil Defence observed that fires from unattended cooking peaked between 10am and noon, when lunch is being prepared. Such fires account for one-fifth of all fires.

In all, there were 546 cases of fires from unattended cooking last year - an increase of about 7.3 percent from the previous year.

Fires involving discarded items showed a slight drop, but it is still a cause for concern.

One such fire at a block at Dover Road last month saw the West Coast Town Council putting up advisories on void deck notice boards to highlight the fire hazard to residents.

Arrow One injured in fire at gas plant on Jurong Island

Singapore Oxygen Air Liquide in Jalan Buroh

SINGAPORE:

Fire broke out at a gas plant on Jurong Island on Thursday morning, injuring one worker.

Callers to the MediaCorp News hotline said the incident occurred at about 8am.

Workers from Singapore Oxygen Air Liquide in Jalan Buroh put out the blaze with water from a hose-reel.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said the fire involved a pipeline from a generator on the first floor of the building.

The SCDF is investigating the cause of the fire.

Exclamation

RESIDENTS in Woodlands and Sembawang woke up on Friday morning to the pungent scent of incense and wondered what it was in the air that did not clear despite a short spell of rain. The answer to the mystery: A fire had broken out at No 6 Woodlands Terrace , a 43,000-sq-ft factory that stored 150 drums of natural essential oils used in the processing of perfumes and food products.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it was alerted at 2.43am and arrived at the scene in eight minutes. At the height of the fire, several fire balls rose to about 10 metres, the SCDF said. About 60 firefighters fought the flames and managed to bring the fire under control after 40 minutes. There were no casualties and the cause of the fire is being investigated.

The public is advised to avoid coming into contact with the water in the canal leading to the beach near Admiralty Road West, as well as the area around that part of the beach, the National Environment Agency said, because some of the contaminated fire-fighting water had been discharged into the canal.

Thumbs up Pollution following fire...

SINGAPORE: Drains and canals at Sungei Sembawang are polluted, following Friday’s fire at a Woodlands factory.

Some factory workers in the area have also complained of pungent smells while others claim to have suffered mild dizzy spells.

Several dead fish at Sungei Sembawang were removed.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) has advised the public not to carry out water sports and other activities in the affected areas. A nearby yacht club has also suspended its activities.

Workers have already been dispatched to clean up the area.

The downpour on Saturday morning also helped to speed up the process. Firefighters took about 30 hours to put out the flames at the factory in Woodlands Terrace. No one was injured.

NEA has said some of the contaminated firefighting water had been discharged into the canal leading to the beach near Admiralty Road West.

Exclamation Vessel catches fire at shipyard in Tuas, 15 injured...

SINGAPORE : Fifteen workers were injured when a vessel caught fire shortly before noon on Sunday.

The incident occurred at Kreuz Shipyard, located at Tuas Crescent.

One of the victims suffered 90 percent burns and is in critical condition.

The flash fire had unexpectedly broken out on the bridge of the supply vessel "Rainbow Star".

Firefighters were called in and they brought the flames under control within 20minutes.

The bridge suffered the brunt of the fire, but the crew living quarters, located one level below, was also damaged.

Most of the victims, made up of crew members and shipyard workers, are in their 20s and 30s.

Channel NewsAsia understands they come from Bangladesh, India and Indonesia.

Six suffered severe burns and were sent to Singapore General Hospital.

Four of them are in the Intensive Care Unit, including one who is in critical condition, with 90 percent burns to his body.

However, the other two are in stable condition in the high-dependency ward.

The remaining nine workers were treated for smoke inhalation at the Alexandra and National University Hospitals.

Among them, six workers were treated for smoke inhalation at Alexandra Hospital, and have been discharged.

Channel NewsAsia understands that the vessel, registered in Belize, has been undergoing maintenance at Kreuz Shipyard since March. And painting work was being carried out at the time of the incident.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Arrow Motorcycle catches fire on PIE

A MOTORCYCLIST in his late 60s suffered burns after his bike caught fire along the Pan Island Expressway on Monday.

He was travelling towards Changi at about 5.40pm when the rear wheel of his vehicle became dislodged, apparently sparking a fire.

Arrow Worker injured in ship blaze at Tuas shipyard

A WORKER sustained second-degree burns in a fire which broke out onboard a ship on Wednesday at a Tuas shipyard where two workers died and five others were injured last Tuesday.

In the latest accident, the fire broke out on the Pacific Sentinel that was berthed at Drydocks World Singapore along Tuas Crescent at about 11.40am.

The injured worker, believed to be a crew member, was taken to hospital with second-degree burns.

Last Tuesday, two Indian nationals died and five others were injured while working below a ship deck at a neighbouring dry dock, in what appears to be a case of gas poisoning.

The deaths prompted the industry-led Workplace Safety and Health Council (WSHC) to put out an e-mail alert on Tuesday, urging shipyards to call for an unprecedented 'time-out' from work to review safety processes and brief workers on safety measures.

Arrow 4 workers injured in flash fire at Somerset substation

The fire triggered a 15-minute power outage in the vicinity, and prompted mass evacuation of office staff.

Some 500 workers in the SingPower building were asked to leave their premises and move outdoor.

FOUR workers were injured in a flash fire which broke out at a Singapore Power substation on Somerset Road on Wednesday morning.

One worker suffered second degree burns on his hands and legs, while the others came down with smoke inhalation. They were taken to Singapore General Hospital.

The fire triggered a 20-minute power outage in the vicinity, and prompted mass evacuation of office workers in several buildings in the area.

In a statement shortly after the incident, SP PowerGrid said the fire occured at 10.07am at a substation.

Office workers in the area heard a loud explosion, followed by black smokes rising from the building.

Several nearby buildings reported brief power failures.

Some 500 workers in the SingPower building were asked to leave their premises and move outdoor.

The building management of The Heeren, which is about 300 metres away, also evacuated some 30 people from the shopping centre.

Mr Jae Liew, 41, a relations manager at The Heeren said he heard a 'loud bang', which immediately triggered a blackout in the building.

He added that the traffic lights in the area also went out of order.

'Power supply was interrupted in the vicinity of Somerset Road, and fully restored by 10.25am,' said the SP statement.

Thumbs down Passers-by use ladder to save trapped tenants...

TRAPPED by a fire in the shophouse, three people shouted for help from its second-storey window.

SCDF personnel put out the flames within 10 minutes of arriving. --Pictures: Zaihan Mohamed Yusof

The incident, which happened in Little India yesterday, ended up with all three victims escaping unhurt, thanks to quick thinking and teamwork by passers-by - and the availability of a tall ladder.

The rescue took place after passers-by noticed thick smoke coming out of the two-storey shophouse in Rowell Road around 12.10pm.

Mr Shyam Prasath, 30, the manager of a budget hotel opposite the shophouse, said he saw people shouting for help in Tamil from the window.

'They shouted to passers-by that they were not able to escape via the door as it was on fire,' he said.

Fortunately, someone in the crowd managed to get hold of a ladder - a lorry driver who had it happened to be there at the time.

Witnesses said the three-tier ladder was tall enough to reach the shophouse ceiling.

Some passers-by held on to the base of the ladder to steady it, while others shouted to the tenants to get out of the burning shophouse quickly.

BROKE GRILLES

Two of the tenants believed to have been in the burning shophouse talking to SCDF officers.

Mr Shyam, 30, said: 'Luckily, they were able to break the window grilles in order to escape.

'They got down safely using the ladder. Minutes later, the fire spread to the spot from where they were shouting for help.'

The lorry driver left with his ladder after the rescue.

Two women, believed to be victims, were later seen giving statements to the police and investigators from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).

The women, who looked to be in their 20s, seemed traumatised by their ordeal and declined to be interviewed.

But a close friend of theirs said three people were asleep in the shophouse when the fire started.

The male friend, who did not want to be named, said: 'Passers-by were shouting 'bakar, bakar' (burn in Malay) to get the tenants' attention. If not for them, surely 'mati' (die in Malay).'

A next-door neighbour said he was glad that the fire did not spread to his and other surrounding buildings.

Mr Han, 44, of Jin Huat Coffee Trading, said: 'The commotion outside got my attention and I saw bystanders pointing towards my shophouse.

'When I saw the roof on fire, I immediately shouted at my staff members to evacuate.'

Mr Han, who has been in business for more than 20 years, said his shophouse was not damaged.

He said he remembered seeing three people climbing down the ladder before the SCDF arrived.

Mr Han had called the police at about 12.40pm.

Firefighters and rescue vehicles soon arrived and the fire was put out in 10minutes, an SCDF spokesman said.

No one was injured and the cause of the fire was being investigated, he added.

The alley behind the shophouse is a popular hangout for men looking for prostitutes and transvestites.

Default THIS IS ALL that's left of his $23,000 MOTORBIKE

Late-night blaze in Woodlands carpark destroys 11 bikes, 3 cars
By Tay Shi'an
July 16, 2008

MR Darren Toh was a picture of dejection as he looked at the remains of his five-month-old $23,000 motorcycle.

'All I have is the exhaust,' said Mr Toh, 31, a storeman.

His was one of 11 motorcycles and three cars that were gutted in a late-night blaze at a multi-storey carpark at Woodlands Drive 70 on Sunday.

Firefighters were alerted at 11.30pm, and they managed to bring the fire at Block 709A under control within 20 minutes.

Anxious residents were then allowed into the affected third storey of the carpark to see if their vehicles were damaged.

Mr Toh, who bought his high-end green Kawasaki Z1000 in February, was seen poking the remains of the bike with his red umbrella in disbelief.

His girlfriend, Ms Shelyn Sim, 20, an accounts assistant, said that they were asleep when they were awakened by loud popping noises.

She said: 'My boyfriend looked outside the window and saw the carpark on fire, and immediately rushed down.

'The fire was very big and we heard four or five explosions. I think it was the fuel tanks.'

Another resident, undergraduate Serene Quek, 20, said the heat from the fire was so strong that she could feel it from the 10th-storey staircase outside her flat.

There was also a lot of smoke and a strong burning smell.

She said at one point the fire looked as though it would spread to other levels of the carpark.

She said: 'We were worried about my dad's car. He parked it on the other side (of the carpark, away from the blaze), but the fire was spreading and we couldn't see the damage inside.'

To the family's relief, their car was not one of those damaged.

But Mr Nor Ismail, 24, a sales coordinator, was not so lucky.

His nine-year-old Honda XR 400 motorcycle was completely destroyed. So was his 19-year-old brother's four-month-old Honda SP125.

He said that the bikes, which together cost about $8,000, had been parked side by side.

Mr Nor said he had parked his motorbike around 11.15pm – just before the blaze started.

He did not notice anything suspicious as he left the carpark.

He said that when he was woken up by the commotion.

He heard shouts of 'carpark fire' and saw the huge blaze exactly where he had parked his vehicle.

He said: 'I knew my bike was gone already'.

SPATE OF CRIMES

Resident Pearlyn Soh, 37, who called The New Paper hotline about the fire and snapped pictures of it, said there have been a spate of crimes in the neighbourhood recently.

She said that a few months ago, the police put up an appeal for witnesses to motorbike parts thefts at the same carpark to come forward.

In March, a fire damaged four cars at an open-air carpark next to Eunos MRT station.

Three months earlier, a car had caught fire, again in a Eunos carpark.

Last August, 24 motorcycles in three carparks around Woodlands were reportedly torched in a single night.

Both the police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force are investigating Sunday's fire.

Recently in woodland precient there is a biker always likes to blast his super loud pipe during wee hours around 4 to 5am, waking everyone up for his own fun! And there're quite a number of bikes with loud pipe in this area likes to chiong off traffic light with super loud sound. I am not saying this fire case is due to these ppl, however i have a valid reason to believe some fire case on bikes have leads

The claim will not take very long. As long as they prove that the bike is yours & the fire not set by you. Mine took 1mth to settle.
