Michelin Tyres - A Better Way Forward
With the inaugural MotoGP Indianapolis Grand Prix taking place at the world's most famous race track on September 14, it's appropriate to examine how racing R&D influences street-tire technology.
"The link between race tires and street tires is much closer than many riders realize," says Lisa Guest, communications manager for Michelin motorcycle tires. "Michelin introduced multi-compound tires to GP racing in 1994. Today, this technology is found in our Pilot® Power 2CT, Pilot® Road 2 and Power Race® tires. Likewise, radial construction, synthetic rubber mixtures, silica reinforcement and semi-slick tread designs were all pioneered by Michelin in Grand Prix racing, then introduced in our production tires. With 26 GP world championships, Michelin has turned the race track into our own test lab, with the world's best riders doing the testing."
Michelin's racing programs have never shied away from competition, and the MotoGP World Championship is no exception. MotoGP bikes put out more than 230 horsepower, and with no aerodynamic appendages to produce downforce, MotoGP bikes depend entirely on their tires for grip.
In this demanding environment, and against stiff competition from another major tire maker, Michelin builds tires that withstand 200mph top speeds, and lean angles approaching 60 degrees from vertical. Since 1975, Michelin riders have won 26 world championships and more than 350 Grands Prix.
Michelin's MotoGP research and development continues 12 months out of the year. Since the end of the 2007 season, Michelin chemists and engineers have focused on warm-up, operating range, side grip and traction.
Edge grip is vital to MotoGP bikes. Michelin has worked hard to allow riders to brake deep into corners and then accelerate hard from the corner apex. Yamaha rider Colin Edwards confirmed that Michelin has achieved this goal: "The new tires are just awesome. You can brake to the apex, full lean and then just hammer it on."
Michelin's performance in a wide range of conditions has also benefited riders.
"In China, our riders were able to race with the same tires that they had used in practice, even though on race day, track temperature was 23 degrees [73 degrees Fahrenheit] less than it had been the day before," said Jean-Philippe Weber, Michelin's director of motorcycle racing. "This wouldn't have been possible a few years ago."
Rapid development of MotoGP bikes puts pressure on tire companies to keep up. "Our tires are very different to what we were using 12 months ago," Weber revealed. "We've already seen that lap times are a lot faster – the Qatar race was 30 seconds faster than last year's."It's a long championship and to be in with a chance of winning the title you have to be both very fast and very consistent, which is never easy."

ARTS ‘advanced rider training school’ together with Michelin tyres.
Michelin tyres have endorsed the services of ARTS (advance rider training school) under the management of Martin Executive Bike Services Sdn Bhd. This training will be conducted by experienced qualified coaches covering safety, theory, bike skills and on track tuition. The training will take place at PG between the hours of 2pm to 7pm on May 9th, format is as follows:
ARTS training will be conducted over 3 group sessions beginning with novices/beginners and riders with lack of experience and lots of enthusiasm, Intermediate experienced riders and advanced riders with many track hours.
You need to bring
A willingness to learn
Your riding kit (One or Two piece (zip all the way round) leathers, full faced crash helmet, leather gloves, motorcycle boots)

Level I (Beginner/novice group training) Coach Name: Rob.
During level one theory we will cover rider safety, bike set up, rider positioning and rider inputs. By the end of the first session you will have taken the first steps to understand how your bike works for you and possibly against you.

Level II (intermediate) Coach Name: Steve
Level II covers the six most common cornering errors. These are the foundation on which you can build from.
1.Corner entry speeds. In too fast? In too slow?
2.Throttle control errors. Too much too soon, not enough, the timing is crucial
3.The turn is started at the wrong place. Turning too early? Too late? How do you know?
4.Steering errors and corrections. Leaning into the turn too quickly or too slowly. Correcting lean angle mid corner?
5.Inappropriate rider input. Too much or too little for the situation you face.
6.Inconsistent apexes. Too wide, too tight or varying?
Anyone with a trained eye can spot these errors. We not only have the trained eyes but the exact, correct remedy for each error. That is what Level II is all about. We even supply the reasons why mastering each of them is crucial and what rewards to expect for getting it right. Imagine for a moment that you have practised and mastered each of these six points. What would your own riding be like if you had?
1.Perfect turn entry speed. Just the way you like it every time.
2.Flawless throttle control. The bike feels stable through every corner.
3.Precision turn entry. A turn-in point that really handles the corner every time.
4.No nervous steering corrections. Just one clean, sharp and accurate sweep through every turn.
5.Complete relaxation. In harmony with the bike under all conditions.
6.Laser cut lines. Consistent ones like a pro can do.
Is this possible? We'd be lying if we said it was easy or that we could coach you to perfection on any one of these points in one day. But, after Level II, you will know why it went wrong and have a way to correct it! Each technical point is fully explained and has an on-track training drill.

Being obviously committed to serious improvement, we go all out to put them in full command of the bike through better lower body stability. We look at the how and when's of body position and how to apply the techniques to get the right result - stability of you and the bike.
1.How do you alter your arc without changing suspension settings?
2.Controlling Your Cornering Arc With The Throttle
3.When is the bike at its least stable and what aspect of the bike/rider combination is the most crucial to good control?
4.How do you maintain stability when faced with a chicane, SS’s or roundabout?
5.How do you get from one side of the bike to other quickly and with stability?
6.How do you plan for a series of corners so you get a good result with minimum effort?
A rider's visual skills are the ultimate foundation of his riding, the more you see, and the more confident you are. The better you can interpret what you see the easier and more confident riding becomes. In other words, you are as good as your visual skills, no better. If you don't know where you are then it is very difficult to decide where you want to go and how to get there. We do this one step at a time.
1.Ride with cornering precision.
2.Have a choice of lines.
3.Have more space in the corner. More space equals more time and rhythm
4.Cure target fixation, any rider’s worst enemy.
Vision is everything and after Level II you will know how it works and how to avoid and beat the pitfalls that you naturally have.
