Thats what maids are for what.

From young, Maid will make milk using the milk powder for the baby because the momma dont wanna breast feed.
K-1 all the way to primary 6 will be at the beck and call of the kid already training them NOT to carry their own bags.
Come secondary school, leave all the books under the desk/lockers in school.
Tertiary better still, unless you're in the JCs theres no need for any books.

Shouldnt we be glad that they're at least making the effort to serve instead of sending the maids to tekong in place of them?

This picture is disturbing (me) in so many levels.

I cannot think of any valid reason for this soldier to be unable to carry his personal field-pack.

I’ve learnt in the army that if it looks like dog sh!t, smells like dog sh!t and even if the texture is like dog sh!t … you don’t have to taste it confirm that it is dog sh!t (no offensive reference to this soldier intended).

P.S. If I had a daughter, it would totally break my heart if she were to grow up to marry such a guy.

Now, even Mindef has joined the fiasco by declaring it wants to take action against this soldier :faint:

Personally I don't see that as a problem. This happened outside the camp, not during a mission or exercise so what's the big deal ?

Does Mindef have any directives against such act or Mindef is going to charge that soldier with the full weight of the Singapore Armed Forces Act under for "Conduct to prejudice of good order or discipline" ?

To me, this soldier has no pride by allowing his maid to carry his fullpack however there is nothing criminal or immoral about it.

Maybe Mindef should also state that every soldier must wash and iron its own uniform. Maybe Mindef has forgotten that all Chiefs of service have an assistant that from time to time also carry their briefcase

He made at least 3 mistakes here when this thing happens:
1) He's wearing uniform
2) He's in public
3) The bag is SAF (camo) bag

Notice that cancelling either one means he's actually ok.

That's why every common sense NSF book out first thing they do is to go home and change clothes first - out in the field is not as dangerous as public scrutiny nowadays, especially when cameras are practically everywhere.

I'm not familiar with military law, but I hoped he won't get charged, probably some warning will do...

The problem lies with society, its a social problem, this cannot be slap with a fine or punishment on one NS man alone. Sg is a city without direction. Talk money too much, this is the result.

If wearing the SAF uniform comes with such great responsibility, did SAF spell out all these requirements in the uniform regulations ? Like in the US Navy, it even stipulates when a sailior can carry an umbrella, what color, on which hand...etc.

I can only blame SAF for failing to instill a sense of pride in their soldiers when in uniform. I see many while in uniform holding hands with their gfs, dozing off in trains, wearing ear-rings.

"Prejurdice to good conduct" fine $100, 5 days DB or 7 extra. If this soldier is being charged (with the help of a good lawyer) the family can turn this against the government and this guy might become a “role model” … the thought of this makes me shiver that it is possible.

I’m not a parent (yet) but I strongly believe that over-protecting your child is bad. If I had a son and if he is of army going age, it is my preference that he learns how to be tough and resilient before entering service.

There is a reason why people say, “Take it like a man!”.

Of cos, the fabric of society is in question. This is the quality our National Defence budget is all about, almost like the huge amounts we tax payers pay through our noses, and jaw dropping salaries our ministers are getting, lost billions in overseas investments, couldnt even contain an orchard road flash floods, 2 year old country hopping new citizens babbling about fighting for Sg, fresh graduates running for politics, . . . . etc, etc, etc, what other news you need to convince yourself something is wrong??? I suspect our next problem will be food, rubbish, crime for the 6.5m the country has to contain, its no easy task looking at the calibre so far. Its gona be one mess after another.

There's not going to be peace like before, too many trash.

i agree, SAF sure to have a few monkeys who (while wearing uniform) will smoke, hold gf hand, not give up seat on MRT in public.... im pretty sure this is not the first time a NS man has asked his maid to help him carry his field pack, but this guy is the sway one who got photographed...

like they always say in the army: do what ever you want just dont get caught can already....

should be interesting to see how the SAF intervenes to repair their public image.... i think this one photo has put back their public image work at least 5 years....

Remember the 'Use your hands' campaign, when some schools organise picking up litters at the beach as social work. A smart thinking parent send his/her maid there with the boy to do the job.
Over the radio talk a 14 yr old boy refuse to bath unless the maid bath for him, probable he ask for extra service also.

Poor soldier. I think he got caught at the wrong time. Just like getting my maid to clean my bike for me. Once in a while, when it needs a very good cleaning, then can help (meaning both me and her do). The NSF must think "she can carry the fullpack while I can take my own sweet time and slowly walk after 5 days of staying in" is right, but got caught at the wrong time.

As the saying goes, Can do anything but don't get caught.

So meaning if you in uniform you are typically force to be a good citizen, giving up seats in buses and mrts. cannot sleep, smoke and swear or be loud in public areas. Cannot fight in public for your rights, just because of how the public sees us?
Going home change come out, you can do whatever you want smoke drink, shouting and hurling vulgarities at one another, sleep on 2 seats at the handicap seats on the mrts. its ok, cause the public don't know you are from SAF.
To me its just a bunch of horseshit. your hair already tell us that u cHAO recruit unless u storeman. or a pes E vocations where your hair can be center parting. Can go around beating and slashing people up. Only when get caught then, Oh u carrying 11b, army personnel? hong kan liao double charging. Why is it only when u wear uniform u must carry the honor and pride of saf and not regardless of uniforms and attire, have the honor and pride of a singaporean? where has all the moral, civil values go?

My point is, why do you think that is happening around Singapore? why people are selfish and Fkup? is it the social upbringing? is it the moral values imparted by our parents? is it the life of society where if its not your problem don't dirty yourself, if its not your credit, claim it by all means. I am sure that ns boy is a selfish prick. treating maid like a bellboy. walking infront couldnt care less of whats happening around him especially behind him getting caught with PICTURES while he msging sweet nothings to his gf/bf. don't even interact with the maid..
But he my friend is our typical singaporean son.

God knows what happen to singapore people, all growing up to be wuss and puss that getting a bad name every country you go. enough of my ranting. at least i hope to drive a message across. the society in singaporean is not very positive even u may earn alot of money so what? your character sucks. No problem, money and certificate can fix everything.

Your "complain list" are way out of the point, please dun purposely make wrong implications of what ppl said. Some of your points I can't understand why you can relate it to something so unrelated.

Just an advice - when you read other people's comment, it's good to apply common sense first instead of directly swaying into the extremes.

Actually cumified is right, its a side-effect of a metropolis. City folks are selfish by nature, especially hard to instill cohesion in a rojak society here. Look at the states, london, shanghai, any major city that has lots of nationality living and working inside. Tension, stress, alienation, we ask for it. Dont expect the good ol days anymore. Want to see kindness and sincerity, have to migrate to find your own kampung overseas, singapore can forget it.

All of you are WRONG! Now stop fighting!

The serviceman is WRONG to have asked his maid to carry his bag. Even though he may be suffering from back injury, or whatever injury, i am sure he was taught by the army that he should not give members of public any grounds for them to find fault with him or the entire force because the uniform he wears represents the army.

So the moral of the story is, you are serving NS, follow the rules and live with it!

cannot like that say, wearing that uniform and that backpack is a symbol, somemore a country's symbol. Same like our country's flag cannot touch the ground, cannot design like swim wear and shake boobs, bons bons etc.
Military is our front line symbol somemore, its actually defeats our purpose to serve ns. Only good that turn out from all this is: where's that new mp who beat chest and says he's invested? If my memory serves me correctly, Stomp was initially set up to serve the public as a means of feedback or airing Singaporean issues. Maybe it is meant to be an online outlet similar to what the forum section in the Straits Times newspaper is about.

To me, Stomp currently looks more like a tabloid column.

During my time in NS, there is a name that we might call this type of guys. They are called, “Mama’s boy”. It is used in a similar fashion as the other nicknames like “CB-mouth” (which was my nickname … don’t ask me to explain), "Indian-Chief” and the most famous version, the “Sabo-king”.

Guys who are labelled mama’s boy are usually those who are not comfortable with daily chores like area cleaning and cannot do weekend guard duty. They also tend to be seen having parents driving them to and from camp.

We all know that as Asians, we are obsessed with face value. There is a hokkien saying, “Better to die than lose face”. Although this NS guy may not be a realistic representation of all of our soldiers, but thanks to the tabloid nature of Stomp all Singaporean guys are now labelled as mama’s boys. This might be the true power of tabloids.

P.S. I think it has truly been made into a mountain from a molehill the moment the government needs to make an official statement over this tabloid picture.
