Default [Group] TRIUMPH Speed Triple & Street Triple

Hi guys... just got myself a black '98 T509.

Was wondering if there's anyone else in SBF who has the same ride... Maybe can meet up some day to share opinions... tips... tuning... etc etc...

Say hi if you see me!

It's a almost-900cc naked bike... made by Triumph from England. The characteristic of this bike is that it has only 3 cylinders, inline.

Most bikes would be inline-4, v-twin, v-four, single-cylinder, etc... but this 3-cylinder is supposed to have the torque of a twin (almost) and the topspeed of an inline-four (almost also).

So far, since i'm one who obey the road laws (haha) i only go abt 110-115kmh on expressways, and i stick to the speed limits on normal roads, streets, trunk roads, etc...

to me, no point getting a letter from TP for riding fast on the road... objective is to arrive safely and in one piece, not in record-breaking times, and fearing a hidden speed trap somewhere!

welcome to the world of Triumph.

The Speed TRiple is indeed a unique looking bike.
REally not many here. the alloy frame is really eyecatching and unmistakeably a work of art in motorcycle design.

I also ride a Triumph but not sports model.

    Hope your thread gets livelier.

    See you on the roads.

Hi, can post a pic of your bike so that we can see how it looks like?
It doesn't make any difference whether a motorcyclist has the right-of-way or not, the rider is the one most likely to get hurt.

By the way, I just took a look online at the new Sprint ST ABS, and I think it blows me away... what a machine!

the coolest things about it in my opinion is the frame, the fat forks and the distinctive twin headlights. very streetfighter indeed!

Congratulations and good choice on your ride. It is indeed a rare bike but also one of the best that triumph has ever produced.

How does it ride for you? What do you like best about it?

Well, I think the riding position is not aggressive enough. Might need to lower the forks and raise the rear suspension.

After a month of riding, I still have yet to find the optimal petrol for this bike. I bought it at close to 10000km on the odo, and now I have breached 12000km. I get 16-17 km/l with most petrols.

The bike responds well to the throttle, but there is still room for improvement. Maybe a change of plugs might do the trick. Torquey at 3000rpm and above. Corners sweet, but since the suspension has not been adjusted for my weight, I still don't dare to go as low as the previous rider.

The previous rider has a chicken strip of only 1cm on the tyres!

I tried to sit on this bike at the showroom. There's a 2002 model and a 2005 model on display. Compared to my 98 model, the 2002 model was a tad smaller. Needless to say, the 2005 model (the one in your pic) was really small and compact. For someone my size, I think I prefer the larger frame and weight of my 98.

    Yo Throttle,

I've got a question for you. Since you don't ride often like I do, do you face problems starting the bike after a while?

Are there any precaution methods I should exercise, like starting the bike every week?

Kind of wondering if the Battery will go flat after a while. Should I Disconnect the Battery Cable as a precautionary method?

This is my final word, as such there shall be no contestation.

make sure you get a good new battery, i use the OEM spec ones and starts first thumb, even after it has been left standing after 2 weeks.

most impt thing is to ensure that your batt has been fully charged before you let the bike stand and to run it a bit when it gets fired up.

never crank the bike with a weak batt, you will fry the alternator.

make sure you get a good new battery, i use the OEM spec ones and starts first thumb, even after it has been left standing after 2 weeks.

most impt thing is to ensure that your batt has been fully charged before you let the bike stand and to run it a bit when it gets fired up.

never crank the bike with a weak batt, you will fry the alternator.
Thankz man...without your reminder, I guess my fingers will be on the starter till the bike starts...hahahah...great tip!...teach me more...

Takes awhile to learn about the triumphs, but once you get to know them, your are kinda screwed.

IMHO, there aren't many other machines out there with both character and decent performance. They are not technologically close to the Jap pocket rockets or are they as exotic as the Italians but they sure hell are fun!

from what i've seen, the 05 speed triple doesn't seem to be "pillion friendly". any comments from 05 speed triple riders/pillions so far?
this is definitely a unique bike, imho, the only class 2 naked with character.

I guess it's because the pillion seat is sooo far back there's no sub-frame sticking out behind it...

For my model, my pillions have suggested I install a grab rail, but I don't see the necessity at the moment.

The bike rides great when you're alone anyway. With a pillion, you don't get the same feel...

just went out for a while with my wife...it was ok I guess...but then again she is pretty small in size...so it didn't pose as a problem for me...

The exhaust however was a bit louder than I had expected...come to think of it...was kinda cool actually...

The bike is really HOT however...will not recomend riders with low sperm count to buy this bike...hahahahah

All in all, pretty good ride so far...

Hope to see you guys soon...

Does your cooling fan switch on when you turn off the engine?

Mine will auto-on when I off the engine, and will auto-stop when the engine is sufficiently cool...

I guess the bike is built for European weather as such it gets hot in the tropics easily...

imho triumph tries to let their engines run as cool as possible hence an efficient cooling system, on the sports and touring machinesm they were so kiasu that they also added the oil cooler.
riding long distances at constant speeds rarely sees the temp gauge rising past the first notch.
the fan kicks in, if memory serves me right at close to 100 C.
even when you shut off the engine, if the temp is above the thermostat threshold, the fan will kick in.
as such it is impt to ensure that your cooling system is functioning properly and is in good nick all the time.
if bikes are old, i suggest you spend the money, ensuring that the hoses are ok, pressure cap is tight and thermostat is functioning as well.

    hi SpeedTriple,

I have the habit of starting the bike at least once a week.

Never have problems with the starting at that interval.

at most crank twice and it'll fire up! Yippy!

actually all bikes (and cars too) with a cooling fan works that way.

It turns on once the temperature triggers a thermo and shuts off when the temp drops regardless of whether you have offed the engine.

thats becos the engine is not that hot.

When the engine is off the heat disperses very quickly so the fan shuts off as well.

If you take your bike on the track and gun it for a few rounds, you will realise that the fan remains on for a while even with the engine off.
