Been riding my shadow since morning...and i got a few questions to ask. I tired searching but can't find. So people who know the answer please help to answer.....thanks.

1)How much petrol can the shadow ace 400 tank hold? How much petrol is in reserve?
2)Near the speedo there is 2 red button with icon looking like a reserve petrol sensor & some engine oil thingy, can someone tell me what is it's actual use? Does it light up?
3)When i pump petrol should i always switch the petrol switch to "res" first then pump or can i just pump at the "on" sign?
4)Where is the choke button for shadow ace?
5)Does shadow ace comes equipped with hazard light?
6)Next to the speedo, there is a black button where i can press, i think its for recording how much you travelduring this ride, how do i reset it back to 0?

Thanks people, please advise this poor newbie here.....

Thanks thanks!

Answers to your questions.

1) 14L including reserve of 2.3L
2) Version before 2004 serve as coolant and engine oil temperature if I remember correctly. Got to look at the icon again to confirm.
3) There is no requirement as in which switch you should turn on to refuel, but I would suggest you to remember switching to 'on' when you ride off.
4) It is located below your fuel tank.
5) Nope.
6) Press and hold.

The lamp in the top right of your speedometer is engine temperatur. You should hope its not turning ON. If its happen you should stop and cool-down your Shadow, and need to check if your radiator works properly.

Thanks for all the replies, you guys are really a great help!

Oh btw grassmere since you say the top right button is your pic is the temperature button for the engine, then what about the lighted one on the left? What does that do? Is it the temperature button for the Engine oil? or Radiator?

Thanks again!

I think it for oil level indicator. It will be ON when you switch the key on and normally, it should turning OFF when you start the engine.
Oil indicator is ON alert for when the engine oil is insufficient or not circulate properly when engine is running ...

Is there any indicator that will light up to tell that the petrol have hit reserve? or we have to figure it out when the bike can't move?.....

You would feel a sudden stall on the lack of petrol, which would be your indicator that prompt you to turn the switch under the fuel tank to reserve position.

Hi, i'm just wondering if any of you have problem with the original wide handlebar of shadow, i think its too wide and long, why? because while sitting on the bike with my legs gripping the tank, i turn to anyone side with the handle, the handle grip end hits my leg.......hmmm anyone previously have this problem?

If i want to change the handlebar to something less wide, any other cruiser handlebar do you recommend?

Will it be harder to maneuvr with a shorter bar?

Can shadow use harley handlebars?

Please advise, thanks!

Yes, looks like we could swap

I do want the longer handlebars, 'cos it's more stable when riding on the highway.

Yup, Harley handlebars are compatible with our Japanese handlebars. Because they are similar, you are better off going to Jalan Besar area to shop for handlebars instead. I was warned it could be a half-a-day effort to ride around the shops looking for the best bargains.

FYI, my handlebars are the same as the Harley Road King. My company's ex-IT manager has a FN plate Road King. I've parked my bike next to his and did a comparison. Exactly the same!!

Edited to say: The handlebars would always be compatible 'cos they are 1" in diameter. Unless you want a fatter one (assuming you can get it to fit), then you are better off getting a custom made one. I got this info from X-ilED

Maneuverability was never a problem with me since I was riding cruise bike all along thus, when I gotten the Shadow, it was a breeze getting used to it.

If you intend to swap a different type of handlebar, you could check out aunties, lab, regina along Kelantan lane or simply custom made one at Seng Kwang.

Nope. Shadow could not made do with Harley Davidson handlebar due to different in diameter unless changing of your handlebar clamp.

Hi Johan,

I think you were mix up as the Harleys are using 1 handlebar while Japanese cruisers are using 7/8. The work around as mentioned in my previous post is to get the clamp change to accommodate the 1 handlebar. It could be likely the previous owner changed yours, as I have not seemed the new changes for the 2005 model at Yamaha agent.

Cheers.

Hmmm wow, after last night first bike wash on my shadow, with time love and tenderness care hehee..i found out what the problem, it seems that my handebar is loose on the riser, thats why the handle is pushed down and can hit my legs. I thought that was the default position, guess i was wrong, i managed to push it up to a more comfortable height then tighten the screw and now it doesn't hit my leg when i do a full turn hahaa..amazing........ I guess i can save on handlebar now.......

You could check out Honda Boon Siew or Mah Pte Ltd, but the original would cost you a bomb. For Lab, chances are the crash bar would be metal make that would rust over time if not taken proper care and the bar are more of cosmetic looks rather than its intended purpose. If you are just after for cosmetic looks, you could check with madman over at the phantom knights forum for Thailand make crash bar.

Don't worry. I also don't squeeze unless I have to. I choose 1 lane to squeeze and I stick with it. If can't squeeze, stay close to a lane that you want to get back to.

Greetings to all!

Newbie here in the forum and with my Shadow 400. Just collected it yesterday (Thursday).

It's a secondhand with plate FR XXX T and apparently has had 3 previous owners. Maybe one of the members or readers of this forum owned this bike before. I would not mind knowing a bit about its 149,957 km history. I think the body is still looks the original (Black and Silver) and the chrome still looks good. It comes with sidebars and I got them to put on a new box. A couple of questions for fellow Shadow 400 owners:

1) is 149,957 km a lot for 7-8 years? (FR plates were about 1998/9).

2) How many km do you average per year? What's the highest total km of a Shadow 400 (at least of riders in this forum)?

I got it for S$3,800 on the road with insurance (6 months). I think I overpaid a little for it, but I really liked the bike and there are not a lot of Shadow 400 in the market. I saw a lot of Phantom 200s.

3) I am having problem with the speedometer and odometer. It does not work once I left the shop. The shop mechanic today has found out that it is the sensor near the front tire that is the problem and not the speedometer/odometer itself. They are ordering the part and will install it (FOC of course). Anyone else have similar problems?

4) Also, when I had the throttle past 3/4 open, it would sometime jerk like there was a mis-timing. The mechanic cleaned out the sparkplug and adjust something (idle? timing?). It seems ok now. Any one with similar issues before?

Overall having ridden it for a day, I find that the Shadow 400 is big, loud, and obnoxious... And damn FUN. I love it.

Cheers.

Hey Bro,

Congratulation on your new acquisition! Take some time to know your new bike before start pushing it to he limit. Mileage seems to be on a higher end. I used to own two early FR bikes and both mileage is just a bit over 45,000 km. Which makes it it about 6,000 - 7,000 km per year, personally I can't even reach that, hardly hit 5,000 km while just using it for daily transportation. Maybe those who go for touring to Malaysia accumulate more mileage and that makes a big difference, can hit 1,000 km or more per trip?

Anyway ride safe and see you one day on the road!

You won't be able to find any download for the mentioned. I used to have the manual, but since bike is sold, manual goes to the new owner which I do not know of. As for the service manual, you could order from Boon Siew, last I heard of, is $60.00.

PS: There is nothing much on the manual and its all in Japanese text.

Hope I still remember.

1st gear - 15km/h
2nd gear - 35km/h
3rd gear - 50km/h
4th gear - 70km/h
5th gear - 90km/h

5th gear is the overdrive gear and 90kph is sort of cruising...the maximum speed most older version of Shadow can do in stock condition should be about 145-150kph.

Congratulation on your new purchase.

1) is 149,957 km a lot for 7-8 years? (FR plates were about 1998/9).
Definitely on the high side.

2) How many km do you average per year? What's the highest total km of a Shadow 400 (at least of riders in this forum)?
I did about 12,000km on my shadow, but 75% was a contribution from touring up north.

Not that I know of, but I guess it is the speed sensor that needs replacement. A few others in this forum have problem with the wiring only.

4) Also, when I had the throttle past 3/4 open, it would sometime jerk like there was a mis-timing. The mechanic cleaned out the sparkplug and adjust something (idle? timing?). It seems ok now. Any one with similar issues before?
It is definitely the sparkplugs, try to replace with new ones if possible.

Hey Nguyenht, welcome to the club, i just got my shadow about 1 month back as well, love every min of it. Would be great if we can have a shadow outing, get the shadow riders or ex-shadow riders to come out and have a kopi session, so we can gather more info and tips from the experienced rider......

I've been riding my shadow for a few years now... FP plate.

I must say that the feeling on the bike was the same when I first got the bike. It's always a pleasure to ride it.

I'm sure fellow riders will feel the same too

Its about $14k available at Mah Pte Ltd for the 06' version and there have the brand new 04' and 05' version as well which may cost a little cheaper. Alternative shop would be Universal, but I am not sure of the version they have there.

You could fix up a tubeless rim for the rear that was used on some Steed with some modification if you could manage to find a used one. Otherwise, Stamford Motor would be your best bet to import a brand new Steed rear rim from Japan and Motorworld for compatible front and rear rim.

Universal Motors should have at least the '06 version.

I didn't know Stamford Tyres also does motorcycle tires. I know they also have the nitrogen fill up for tyres and they charge for cars. I dunno about bikes.

I should get tubeless tyres for my bike too. I think it's going to be bald before my next long trip!

HELP on Reserve Fuel Switch....

Ok this sounds silly, but I don't know what to make of the three positions of the Reserve Fuel Switch on my Shadow 400 (recently acquired). From what I can see, I think it looks like this:

OFF

RES <<<

ON

1) So where should the switch be when I am riding normally?
2) Where should it be when I am filling up?
3) When the bike starts to sputter, where should the switch be put to?

Lastly, the main fuel tank capacity is about 12-13 liters. What kind of mileage (or is it kilometerage) are you all getting per liter?

Thanks.

For the fuel switch, it should be set to On. When it splutters and no power, then switch it to Reserve. When topping up, leave it until you finish, then switch it back to On.

I'm not sure about mileage, but I think would be about 23 km/L. I need others to clarify on this.
