    Yeah,

I was also wondering what is it like being an Air Traffic Controller. Is it quite xiong?

Reason why I'm asking is because I think I had a reality check one day and found out that I wasn't really pursuing my dreams to be around or to operate a heavy aircraft.

To those working in MX line, hats off to you. More A320s to service, yeah?

19 June 07 The Strait Times
    by Karamjit Kaur, Aviation Correspondent

Plans for $60m Seletar Aerospace Park on course

SINGAPORE'S $60 million Seletar Aerospace Park is ready for take-off.
The masterplan for the 140ha facility will be unveiled only in the next two weeks, but the Economic Development Board (EDB) - which has been hard-selling the project for more than a year now - has already seen strong interest from industry players.

The first few lease agreements for the new development are expected to be inked before year-end, said Mr Manohar Khiatani, EDB's assistant managing director for transportengineering.

He told The Straits Times that interest was 'strong' from all sectors of the industry - companies offering aircraft maintenance and repair services, those manufacturing aircraft components, as well as aerospace training schools.

The transformation of the sleepy surroundings of Seletar Airport, a former military airbase where about 30 aerospace companies are located, will be carried out in phases and will take about nine years to complete.

Existing tenants like Jet Aviation and Singapore Technologies Aerospace are eager to expand operations to meet the needs of the fast-growing aerospace sector, which generated output valued at a record $6.3 billion last year.

This was a 20 per cent increase over 2005 and twice that of 2001.

By 2018, the sector's total output is expected to hit $12.6 billion.

Jet Aviation, an authorised ser- vice centre for Bombardier, Cessna, Gulfstream and Boeing business jets, now occupies about 2ha of land at Seletar and aims to double this when the park is developed.

Its vice-president and general manager for Asia, Mr Michael Sattler, said: 'Singapore is a very good location and offers many advantages. The upcoming integrated resorts are also expected to attract more corporate and business jets here.'

The only question mark now is how much rent tenants will have to pay when the new park is ready, he said, adding: 'We will have to wait for the full details before making a final decision.'

In the meantime, 15 companies occupying a single- storey building near the airport - the first to be affected by the redevelopment - are already packing their bags.

They will be temporarily housed in two abandoned buildings in Old Birdcage Walk, which is also within the former military airbase.

The development of the new aerospace hub will take care of the industry's land needs for at least 10 years, Mr Khiatani said.

Aerospace activities are now also being carried out in Loyang and Changi North, but space is fast running out there.

A recent study commissioned by the Association of Aerospace Industries Singapore (AAIS) confirmed that Singapore was Asia's undisputed leader, particularly in aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul.

But the two factors that could pose challenges to its future growth are labour cost - higher than in other regional countries - and a manpower crunch.

The key to continued success is ensuring that workers here stay highly- skilled and productive, Mr Khiatani said.

The arrival of new aircraft such as the Boeing 787 and Airbus 380, which will create demand for new equipment and expertise, will create new opportunities for Singapore, he added.

On its part, the Government will continue promoting Singapore as an aerospace hub, attract existing players to increase their presence here, and get new ones to come to the country.

Tax incentives and grants are among the perks offered to entice companies here, Mr Khiatani noted.

To address the manpower crunch, plans have been made to train more people for the industry, he said.

By 2009, institutions like polytechnics and universities will produce 1,000 new aerospace graduates a year, up from 600 today and just 100 three years ago.

Said Mr Khiatani: 'Aerospace is an exciting and high- growth industry...so many countries are keen to build up their activities.

'We will do whatever is necessary to ensure that we remain attractive and competitive on a total-cost basis.'

Singapore faces competition from other Asia-Pacific countries like China, which will see a huge growth in its aerospace business, largely from its huge domestic aviation market.

And skilled labour could well flow towards the Middle East, where salaries in high-growth markets like the United Arab Emirates and Qatar are usually much higher than those here.

Nearer home, Malaysia and Thailand are equally eager to build up their aerospace industries.

Senai Airport in Johor and Subang on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur have ambitious plans and are reportedly putting out the welcome mat to companies which are now here.

The development of Seletar Aerospace Park will give Singapore an edge in the dogfight, and follows requests in the last few years by companies located there for expansion and better facilities.

But there is a price to pay.

Residents who live in the 305 black-and-white colonial rented houses amid the green haven of quiet streets in the former airbase are reluctant to move when their leases expire at the end of next year.

Many have asked to stay on for as long as the land they occupy is not required for development. They have not received a response to their request.

The area is also home to two golf courses, both ope- rated by Seletar Country Club. The members-only club will stay, but the nine- hole public course will go when the lease expires at the end of this month.

The 3,000 golfers who frequent the public Seletar Base Golf Course have signed a petition asking the authorities to reconsider the closure, but the Singapore Land Authority is standing firm.

Its spokesman said, however, that the driving range is likely to be retained because only a small part of it may be affected by road-widening works in area.

The final decision will be known when JTC Corporation unveils the blueprint for the area.

In the meantime, a banner went up yesterday at the golf course informing users they have until Sunday to play there. After that, it will be history.

JTC Corporation finalises Seletar Aerospace Park masterplan
SINGAPORE : The masterplan for the new Seletar Aerospace Park has been finalised

Responding to media queries, JTC Corporation says there will be a new airport with a bigger runway, and an industrial area.

But it will also contain some of the old heritage charm Seletar is well known for.

Pieces of Singapore's history will be taken down to make way for the new Seletar Aerospace Park but there are plans to keep about 200 of these heritage buildings.

The bigger ones will be converted into Food and Beverage outlets similar to those at Dempsey Road and Rochester Park.

Affected residents are expected to move out when the lease expires in December 2008.

131 other houses will also be left untouched for residential purposes.

JTC made known their development plans to the residents at a closed-door briefing on Tuesday evening.

Sim Kin Teck, a resident there for 8 years, said: "At least some will be happy. I'll be very disappointed because I like this place so much, it is so unique."

Roger Low, another resident, said: "When I first moved in, I knew they wanted to do something here. But I still wanted to come and experience it. So I'm glad that I get to stay for at least two or three more years."

Resident Rahul Vadgama said: "We'll certainly review it and see how to we can work with JTC to make life pleasant for everyone."

Other key features in the masterplan include a wider and longer runway to allow bigger planes like Airbus A320 to land.

The various areas form a new 140 hectare industrial park, about the size of 100 football fields, to accommodate hangars and workshops for plane maintenance and repair.

The park will also have an aviation training school and an F&B area.

Two new exits will be created at the Tampines Expressway, only for industrial purposes.

The masterplan also took into account the lush greenery of the Seletar area.

JTC says some of these will be conserved, including some rare species of trees, or trees which have been here for a long time.

A small river stream will also be saved because, according to the Nature Society, it is home to a variety of crabs and turtles.

JTC says nearly all plots of the industrial area have been taken up under phase one of the development.

When completed in 2018, the park is expected to generate 10,000 new jobs (predominantly skilled and technical positions) and contribute S$3.3 billion annually to the economy. - CNA/ch

well my friends,i guess theres abit of misunderstanding,

he's right,at my company, the "Inspector" has equal 'power' to an "Engineer" in SIAEC.only diff is that they have authority for releasing the Engines itself to SQ,MAS,emirates etc...unlike the engineer at SIAEC who releases work carried out on the PLANE..
yen96 might be referring to the people doing inspectION work(checking for defects)we have those guys too...

Diploma or NTC usually start as technician. Technicians have different grades also...Tech1,tech2, tech3 etc etc senior technician. After many years of experience maybe promote to inspector. Technicians do the "actual" work meaning they do the necessary "work" on the part etc etc. Inspectors do only "checking".
Usually with degree, some companies MAY hire as engineer. Engineers "tell" the technicians wat to do. Also, give "instructions" to inspectors wat to do.
Technicians & inspectors are not classified as "professionals" !!!
Technicians & inspectors "answer" to their "supervisors". And supervisors report to the manager. Engineers report to managers
So much difference! Responsibility also vast greatly !
Well at least for me , it works this way !
    haha

not exactly true....it depends what engineer position he is holding? a tech service engineer will provide engg solution, a license aircraft engineer is the one that signed off the task, an inspector is more like conforming the task to the installation....each individual has a different role to play....

    Hi,

Anyone taking the CAAS AME exams in Oct?
    Shall we exchange notes?
I was surprised no one takes this exam in this forum when i posted it in this thread for the April 07 exams.

    Thanks!

    hullo guys,

I wish to be a TAME in 1 and half years time.. i got a question here, how does one knows whether he/she will be a cat B1 or B2 license holder?

    must a C license holder be both B1 n B2?

Basically it depends on your highest qualification... ie, degree or diploma.
Now all training is done in SAR66... SAR7 going to be phased out.

For A&C, pass the 13 CAAS basic papers, take a type course, collect/summit your work schedule, pass the interview, get license.

Thats SAR7. SAR66 abit different. go to www.caas.gov.sg for more info if ur really interested.

Its just about finding a company to sponser your entire training.
