    Welcome to the new Bajaj Pulsar Thread 21/4/08.

    As our community is getting mature, we feel that it is time to bring the Bajaj team to a new wholesome level. But first we must unite all pulsarian out there. Irregardless of new, old, ex pulsar rider or even if u own a Bajaj, you are welcome to join and chat in this new thread.

    Our aim for this new thread will be :

    1) There will be a series of touring/long or short trip outside singapore.

    2) Some of these trip is organise by other bike group or main outing done by SBF.

    3) Building up ours "on the road" experience.

    4) Building up friendship with other bikes.

    5) BUilding up the confidence level between you and ur ride.

    There will also be couple of meetup for a short break and chatting session, every forenightly, some rounding around singapore or even go JB for a quick top up.

    So now, we calling all pulsarian to unite under this new thread. Please remember.... a strength of one person is not enough to accomplish all this, Let us all play a part to keep and bring this New Bajaj Pulsar team to a new level.

    Note: Previous two thread of Bajaj Pulsar (1 residing in Bike Spec & Review and the other here in Naked Bike section) had been merge into one thread and requested to be locked for our references. All pulsarian please take note.

    Default All about Bajaj Pulsar Auto

    Allow me to share some of the basic knowledge about Bajaj Puslar.


    Bajaj Pulsar is a motorcycle brand owned by Bajaj Auto in India. The two wheeler was developed by the product engineering division of Bajaj Auto in association with famous Japanese design house Tokyo R&D

    History
    Before the introduction of the Pulsar, the Indian motorcycle market trend was towards fuel efficient, small capacity motorcycles (that formed the 80-125 cc class). Bigger motorcycles with higher capacity virtually did not exist (except for Enfield Bullet). The launch and success of Hero Honda CBZ in 1999 showed that there was demand for performance bikes. Bajaj took the cue from there on and launched the Pulsar twins in India on November 24, 2001. [2] Since the introduction and success of Hero Honda CBZ, the Indian youth began expecting high power and other features from affordable motorcycles.

    Market position
    As of 2006, the Bajaj Pulsars arguably form the most popular motorbike product in the newly emerging 150+ cc class of Indian two wheeler market.[3] Bajaj have been regularly making alterations to it to make the motorbike look fresh at all times.

    2001
    The original Pulsar came with a 150 cc or 180 cc air-cooled, single-cylinder, petrol, spark-ignited four-stroke engine. They featured a single spark plug to ignite the air-fuel mixture fed from a carburetor, simple spring shock absorbers, round headlamp dome and 1,235 mm wheelbase. Disc brakes as standard equipment was a novelty in Indian motorcycles of the early 2000s. Other standard features were parking lights and an aircraft-type fuel tank lid. The 180 cc version came with Electric Start (ES) and twin-tone horn, both of which were optional equipment on the 150 cc version.

    2003
    The second generation Pulsars featured Bajaj Auto's newly developed DTSi technology[4], which increased the power rating of both versions by 1 bhp each and also increased fuel economy[5]. This model also sported a new headlamp assembly, 1,320 mm wheelbase[6], and standard twin-tone horn and trip meter.


    2005
    In 2005, Bajaj launched another upgrade of the Pulsar. The bike was offered with 17 inch alloy wheels as standard option, and the stance was also lowered by about 12 mm to hopefully make it look meaner but unfortunately it could not. It was the first time any bike maker in India had offered 17 inch profile wheels at the rear. The fuel tank now had a capacity of only 15 litres[7]. The power output was now further increased to 13.5 bhp @ 8500 rpm[8]. The rear shock absorbers were now gas-filled Nitrox absorbers.


    2006
    Bajaj introduced another version of Pulsar. New features included: pilot lamps separated from the main headlamp, turn indicators with clear lenses and amber bulb, self-cancelling turn indicator switch, flush LCD screen with digital read-out of key vehicle data, non-contact speed sensor, non-contact backlit switches, twin-stripe LED tail-light assembly and side panels altered for a sharp, tapering-towards-the-rear look. The engine had increased torque availability, reduced vibration and improved gear shift feel[9].


    2007
    Main article: Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi
    In July 2007, Bajaj began selling the Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi, featuring fuel injection, a digital dash, and modern styling. This bike has some features which are totally new to the indian market, like the Fuel Injection itself then there's a rear disc brake and clip on handle bars

    Default Technology

    DTSi
    DTSi stands for Digital Twin Spark Ignition, a Bajaj Auto trademark. The DTSi idea is a simple one to understand - it involved usage of two spark plugs (instead of the usual choice of one) per engine cylinder.

    Bajaj Auto holds an Indian patent for the DTSi technology. The Alfa Romeo Twin-Spark engines, the BMW F650 Funduro which was sold in India from 1995 to 1997 also had a twin-spark plug technology, and the Rotax motorcycle engines,more recently Honda's iDSI Vehicle engines use a similar arrangement of two spark-plugs. However very few small capacity engines did eventually implement such a scheme in their production prototypes. This may be the case because the idea was perhaps not observed to yield any significant or noticeable performance benefit that could be justified against the additional investment of an extra spark plug. This may well be the reason behind very few Indian motorcycles offering products based on the multiple-spark-plugs technology. In India, it has often been a subject of debate and curiosity if the multiple-spark-plug idea is of any noticeable utility or not.

    While Bajaj claims that the Pulsar is a complete in house product, it should also be known that they had learnt a considerable know-how of building motorcycles from their erstwhile technology partner Kawasaki. Take for instance the original Kawasaki-Bajaj Eliminator, (now sold as the Bajaj Avenger) that had a different engine design than that of the current 180/200 cc Avenger series.


    ExhausTEC
    ExhausTEC stands for Exhaust Torque Expansion Chamber, a Bajaj Auto trademark. The technology involves use of a small chamber connected to the exhaust pipe of the engine to modify the back-pressure and the swirl characteristics, with an aim to improve the low-end performance of the bikes. This was attempted in response to the issue of a reported lack of low-end response in Bajaj's single-cylinder four-stroke engines. The ExhausTEC technology is claimed to be highly effective in improving the overall engine response, especially the low-end torque characteristics. This enhanced performance is claimed to come at no loss of top-end performance or engine smoothness.

    Default Fuel injection

    Fuel injection technology worldwide
    As opposed to the carburetor, the fuel injection mechanism usually improves the engine startability, offers a brisker torque response to throttle changes and diagnostics features. It is possible to establish accurate closed-loop control of air-fuel ratio by using the fuel injection mechanism (as an actuator) and utilizing feedback information from an exhaust oxygen sensor (as a sensor). These two components require sophisticated manufacturing practices and therefore a closed-loop fuel injection system forms a costly proposition. It was discovered in late 1970s that accurate closed-loop control of air-fuel mixture encourages efficient destruction of exhaust pollutants in a three-way catalytic converters thereby enabling a gasoline engine to produce substantially low exhaust emission quantities as demanded by the emission standards worldwide. It is for this reason that microprocessor based fuel injection technology has been implemented widely in gasoline powered four-wheelers since early 1980s. In early 1990s, several global two-wheeler OEMs also began downsizing and adapting the fuel injection technology for use in two-wheelers; the most notable efforts[10] have perhaps been those from Honda.


    Fuel injection technology in India
    In India, all four wheelers since late 1990s feature microprocessor based closed-loop fuel injection technology in place of traditional carburetor to meet the Bharat emission standards imposed by the Government of India.[11] Indian two-wheeler companies have been little sluggish in comparison, however since early 2000s, they too have initiated developing the fuel injection technology to meet the emission standards of the future (early 2010s) and for customer appeal of a high-end technology.

    The relatively late entry of fuel injection technology in Indian two-wheelers is mainly attributed to the higher cost sensitiveness of the Indian two-wheeler market in comparison with the Indian four-wheeler market.

    It is for these reasons, introductions of fuel-injected motorcycles such as Glamour FI, Pulsar 220 into Indian market are often considered as bold, aggressive moves. The often prohibitively higher cost that fuel-injection warrants limits the application to the 'premium' segment of the motorcycle market, as is exemplified by the rather slow sales of the Glamour FI.

    However, the early fuel injected two-wheelers in India are not expected to implement the aforesaid closed-loop control of air-fuel ratio in view of the consequent cost implications. Rather they are likely to implement the less costly option of "open-loop" or feed-forward regulation of air-fuel ratio thereby avoiding usage of (costly) exhaust oxygen sensor. Automotive experts argue that such a scheme, in comparison with the aforesaid closed-loop scheme, is often significantly less effective in reducing exhaust pollutants (see Catalytic converter#Rich Burn Spark Ignition Engines). As a result, the early fuel injected Indian two-wheelers are not likely to be significantly more environment-friendly than their carburetted counterparts. However, these fuel-injected two-wheelers are expected to outdo their carburetted counterparts in the areas of pickup, mileage, durability, dashboard diagnostics and the customer appeal of a high-end technology.

    Singapore Bajaj Team Monthly Outing (BTMO) FAQ

    Q: How often is BTMO held?
    A: Bajaj Team Monthly Outing is usually held either:
    - Every 2nd Saturday of each month from 2100hrs till late. Just check your calenders and see which Saturday is the 2nd of that month. It's that simple!


    Q: Where do you people meet?
    A: The meet-ups are usually held , starting at Kallang KFC in the east side, where the ex-National Stadium is.

    Q: How do I get there?
    A: From ECP towards Changi Airport:
    Exit at fort road, go straight all the way, make a left turn at the end and travel onwards till you see directions on how to get to the ex-National Stadium. When you make that left turn into Stadium drive, on your LEFT, is the KFC and Macdonald's outlet. In case of bad weather, you can find us hanging around KFC itself. Make one round at the KFC and u can find other bikers beside the KFC. All marques are most welcome to join us!

    Q: So what do we actually do there?
    A: Generally, the bikers will talk about their bikes and display their aesthestically-modified or pimp ride. Technical/Aesthetic Questions and answers are often traded at the meetup. If you would like some technical assistance with installing something..or checking out a gritty problem, the enthusiasts will be most willing to help you out for free (or maybe for some food/drink which is available at KKFC & supper place ).

    Q: I don't ride a Bajaj! Am I welcome?
    A: Other marques also do attend the monthly meetup such as Fazers, Gixxers, R1s...So don't be shy! Even if you don't ride a Bajaj, we still welcome your presence. Many of the ex-bajajowners still join up with us. So really, do feel free to join us.

    Q: But i'm new! And i don't know anyone... however i would really like to join in.
    A: Well, no worries. Make use of this forum (Introduction / Newbies corner) to introduce yourself and get people to know who you are, and your ride. You'd be surprised how many people link up with long-lost friends on the forum.

    Q: How To Make The Best Use Of The Meetup Sessions?
    A: The meetup sessions are best experienced by YOUR participation. Don't be shy to talk and say hello! All of us will be willing to share any bit of information, feedback & ideas with you. From experience, we have also noticed that people who have enjoyed themselves during the 2+ hour session, are the ones who have gone around making a lot more friends, compared to those who stand around and expect people to say hi to them in the first place. So do make that first step to say hello.

    As there is a growing number of new member, It time for a next DIY session for hazard. Hazard is a essential thing we need on the road. the wiring is simple and yet doesn't void the warranty of the bike as no orignal cable is being touched.

    For our beloved Pulsar, Hazard light that common done by other workshop, need to on the switch followed by signal light inorder to activate the hazard light. which is not ideal in any way. The one that we'll be installing is direct. Hazard light can be activate thru only one switch.

    We need to know how many member want to fix this hazard light inorder to confirm the date and location. Also, our R&D need to go for purchase the part needed. P180 and P200 is welcome.

    This is a non-profit DIY session. The aim is to equip our pulsar to have a better safety equipment when on the road.

    Important DOCUMENT to Bring
    A copy of vehicle registration card is require to declare ownership of your bike before entering the kingdom of Thailand. The carbon copy of the vehicle import chit is to be well kept & must return before leaving Sadao, a penalty fee would be required if it's misplaced or failure to returned during your stay from your visit to Thai again before entry. A small endorse fee of rm1 or 20baht is payable for each passport. To avoid unneccessary delays at custom, prepared with all the above.

    And Money
    based on pulsar supreme F/C and on 1 x Full Tank (19L) = 450KM = (RM 35
    Total Amount need for Petrol = RM 35 x 4 time = RM 140 (NO topping of petrol in thailand. Last topping up is in Malaysia)

    Hotel Fees = Estimate SDG $60 per day. = 60 x 2 day = SDG $120(maybe cheaper)

    Total amount NEEDED (must) = SDG 120 + 70 (RM 140) = SDG $190 x 20% spare = SDG 228.


    Plus bring along some spare cash for enjoyment in thailand.... (BUy helmet and so)

    Travel insurance

    It will be best to have this extra insurance to cover ourself. I will check it out and update here.


    BIKE Condition

    Please ensure the bike is certifed by UM mech to ensure that the bike is in good condition to travel NOrth and back.

    Default Type of Bajaj Puslar

    IMHO, .there is a total of 3 main + 2 sub version for Bajaj DTS-i,

    UG1 (First Batch, year 2005) - come with spoke rim and chrome exhaust, Analog meter, Engine in silver colour. (RARE to see on the road)

    UG2 ( Year 2006) - Come with sport rim, black exhaust, no engine kill switch, engine in black colour. Analog meter. Sprocket using 6 holes.

    UG2.1 (2006) Same as UG2 except that it came with engine kill switch. sprocket using 4 holes.

    UG3 (2007) Digital meter, Auto signal light off, Led tail light, Cystal casing for the signal light. Design of the bike looks sharper. 15 front, 43 rear

    UG3.1 (2008) Improved version of UG 3. Less problematic. How to know the difference... look at the carb. New model, there is a serial number engrave there. Plus the Chrome cover (front) for the exhaust is different. 15 front, 43 rear

    UG3.2 (2008) Improved version of above. matt silver exhaust heat shield, fibre carbon Digtal meter look. Sprocket size is 39

    P200 (2008) The new digital console is an advanced version of the latest Pulsar family. Apart from the Digital Odometer, Digital Speedo Meter, Digital Fuel Gauge and two Digital Trip Meters, the console on the 200 cc Pulsar DTS-i has indicators for Air filter condition, Engine temperature, Battery voltage and Oil level, all of which contribute to enhancing rider info for trouble-free riding. Another first is the use of split seats for styling and comfort. The split grab rail perfectly compliments the new rear chiseled looks. It is also the first Indian bike to have electric start as the sole means of engine cranking, dispensing with the kick lever. REAR Sprocket size 39


    All above information is based on my finding and interaction with other pulsarian. It might not be 100% but close.

    Hi bros, was looking for the pulsar thread and found out it was locked. Hope this thread is approriate for my question. How much does 3rd party insurance cost for this bike, I am 21 years old with 2 years riding exp.. roadtax is $80 per year, yes?

    err jus curious, what is the purpose of 3 point grounding? what's the pros and cons?

    and how do fellow pulsar rider reduce the vibration? i travel from west to east via PIE just now constantly at 80km/h, by the time i exit PIE, my hand almost cant feel the clutch n brake level.

    The main purpose for the x point grounding is to provide a better return path for the electricals in an old bike where some of its grounding points had corroded resulting in higher resistance in the electricals' return path.

    The pros of grounding (if done correctly) can result in better electricals, you may see brighter headlights and signals.

    The cons of grounding is you have to spend money. When done by a mech who knows nuts about grounding, you may get a short circuit and a bike that looks like charcoal.

    In new bikes, it may also help if the original electrical path design is not good.

    So far, when I go to um for servicing, I will get them to tighten the engine mounting screws. it helps to a certain extend. There is no way to fully eliminate vibrations.

    Sometimes our style of riding also affects the numbness. Try not to grip the handle bar to tightly. I frequently travel from jurong to changi for food , but I do not have this problem because I have learned to relax my grip but still maintain proper control.

    thanks for the nice info!

    i know impossible to fully get rid of the vibration, can lessen good already. perhaps like using a heavier balancer, softer handgrip, wearing gloves? got use anot huh?

    i had this encounter before. what i did is change the ratio of my sprockets. it help a little.. less vibration at high speed... but you'll lose your pick up power..just a little...

    aggresive pick-up VS smooth cruise at high speed.


    currently my sprocket ratio is 16:42

    err sorry newbie here but to change the ratio of sprockets, i need to like just turn and click something (like in the case of suspension) or need to change the part?

    and actually most of the time i am on normal road... if change liao, pick up still faster than average cars?

    i'm just 'agak-agak' only lah...Kr is sport bike so the insurance is higher for sure.. s4 don't have to say lah.. higher CC bike.

    if i'm not, our Bajaj is categories under 'others' in the ntuc insurance.

    different brand of bike different price for insurance, thats how they see it.

    you need to change the sprockets. best to change the sprocket both front and back together with a new chain. thats highly recommended.

    u can go check you rear sprocket and look for an engraved number. see whats the number.. should be 40++ and thats the teeth.. for the front u cannot see lah cos covered.. but i believe its 15 teeth.. that for the second version of pulsar lah. anyway the UG3 should be the same...

    pick up faster than car... thats how you play with your gear and clutch.
    and also u have pillion or not.. all this comes to play. anyway no matter what, a car can pick up better than us.. but why need aggressive pick up.. take it easy lah...... if u want agresive pick up like scrambler, must change your sprocket to bigger size.. u'll be the first one to zoom to the front.. but than.. slowly slowly, the rest of your frens overtake you.. lost the top speed.
    or maybe u can go down UM and ask the mechanic.. they will advice u on what ratio to get.....

    the "slow throttle" of the pulsar allows you to really control fuel consumption... or pickup.

    my riding style has taken an evolution since i already got a "play" bike, so the pulsar i am using mainly for work. i used to only manage 560km before hitting reserve, now i managed to hit 790km before hitting reserve. 50-60 normally, 70 on overtaking. calulated it to be around 49km/l. hurrah! specs are really honest.

    another thing good about the pulsar is the really accurate speedometer that i have come to appreciate to put down speed freaks when i expose that the pulsar's 100kph is a 125z's 135kph.

    you only need 1/4 throttle to manage on the streets. and less than half to manage on the express ways, except when overtaking. more than that, it starts to be wasteful. for gains of 30kmh you need to use twice as much petrol? thats a gear ratio limitation that can be overcome by installing a smaller sized sprocket. i have yet to change mine, since after 30k and frequent lubrication, the chain and sprocket are still shiny, like new. man, these stuff can take a beating. O.o;

    i am back in school again, so i am using my pulsar less and less. dont intend to sell it away though. the millage is too awesome.

    hope to meet you guys up again. all work and no play is driving me insane.

    Replacing my stock balancers with longer and heavier ones definitely helped to reduce the vibrations on my handlebar. Bad news is, Equipment Extreme doesn't bring in these made-in-Italy balancers anymore.

    I always wear gloves when riding, but then, it's to protect my hands in the event of a fall/crash lah. The thought of wearing them for the comfort of my hands never crossed my mind.

    err but not possible to find any balancer that are heavier than our stock 1 locally anymore?

    anyway how much does a pair of balancer cost roughly? i just need a good estimation.

    hello ppl...i'm back, i'm gad we shift to a new place, congrats fellow roomates.so how is everybody...
    recently i met tis old timer named zack i think, he said he had his piston top changed to a aprilla one, as both r same...i dunno wat he was refering to but come to think of it we might have someone somewher who can do bajaj spares...i'm tryin to locate him but still tryin...will update soon...
    mean time rock on pulsars...universal still the same sia, i just saw chris chop a newbie on some wiring probs he had, told newbie to join our forum...

    bro did u try checkin ur tyres...is it at right pressure...i used stock ones aft i changed it became better but not solved...if ur meter is digital vibration might crack the holder brackets in the long run...certified by UM mechs

    I'm new here. Just ordered a blue pulsar today,180 cc one, collecting this sat. 200cc model need to wait for another month. Hope will have chance to meet up and learn more about this bike.

    my tyres aren't stock either. i last check around 2 weeks ago so i doubt the problem is that. the strong vibration only kicks in after 80km/h. either is the way the bike is, or it's just simply not used to it as this is my first bike.

    anyway mine was the ug2 i think. analog meter without engine kill switch.
