    Default cables oiling..



    when is the last time you have cleaned and oil your bike's cables...
    clutch, speedo, brakes..etc, etc,
    i will be arranging this for our first meet up...
    those who want to check and batterries that need to be charged are welcomed too...(got only one charger...so if u have one bring it along..)

    to think of it, i dont know how to oil the cables? need someone to teach me how to do it. if im free, ill come over? pending though. will keep you updated man.

    cables need oiling? didn't know that ...can you elaborate abit on why that needs to be done?

    as wilth all moving/sliding objects/components...suffers from the effects of friction and contamination(if exposed to the atmosphere) some sort of cleaning and oiling may be required from time to time..
    unless specified by the manufacturer of cables or bike that this is not required ( cables with nylon or teflon sleeves need not be oiled)..common sense tells u that this needs to be done on a regular basis..

    i brought this subject up ..as this is the most neglected maintenance on our bikes...there are commercial equipment for this if u are interested...but i am trying to make a DIY cables oiler..

    what i need now is a large syringe..ya those needle thingy used by doctors (without the needles..)...anyone knows where to get one..or kind enough to donate one..will be appreciated..

    for your perusal..



    Maintaining your motorcycle is an important job. Not only so that your bike will live a long life, but also so that it works at its optimum. Everyone knows the basic, really important tasks, like changing your oil, making sure your tires are in good condition, cleaning and oiling your chain, etc.

    There is one very important maintenance task that a lot of people overlook. That's the process of maintaining your throttle, clutch and other control cables. Most people don't give much thought to the controls of their bike, but it is one of the most important parts of your bike, and well-maintained controls can make riding a lot more fun. On the other side, neglected controls can be downright dangerous, or leave you stranded with a broken cable.

    Doing the work to maintain your controls and cables is pretty simple work; it just takes a small investment in time, and a little familiarity with some easy procedures. The frequency of maintenance will vary depending on the type of riding you do, what kind of bike you have, and what sort of conditions you ride in. A dirt bike that gets ridden hard in dirty or muddy conditions will need much more maintenance than a street bike that just gets ridden on sunny weekend days. A good rule of thumb is to at least start the riding season with a good maintenance overhaul. Start with the cables, and then go from there. A street bike may only need this work once a season, a dirt bike may need it every other ride, or maybe every ride!

    These procedures also apply to new replacement cables. Most replacement cables are sold without any lubrication, it is critical for their proper function and long service life that cables are properly lubricated.

    Remove the Cables
    First thing you have to do is remove the cables from your bike. Always refer to the factory service manual for your model motorcycle for these procedures. Getting any part of the disassembly or assembly wrong could result in a stuck throttle or a non-functioning clutch, both of which are extremely dangerous. You service manual will also have detailed specifications about cable adjustment and in some cases, proper cable slack, which is also critical to the proper and safe function of your motorcycle.

    For all cables, the first thing to do is to clean up the housing, and inspect the cable for any wear. If the housing is worn to the coil winding, or one of the fittings is damaged or worn, this is a good time to think about some new cables. If they look good, the next step is to relubricate the inner wire.

    Lubricating the Cable
    Lubricating the wire inside the housing will make it slide more smoothly, and will also extend the life of the cable by reducing friction Motion Pro makes an excellent Cable Lube, and also a Cable Luber to make this job as easy as possible. The Cable Luber installs over the end of the housing, and clamps over the inner wire. There is a port in the side of the tool where you can insert the tube from the spray can of lube, and then short bursts of the aerosol will force lubricant into the cable housing and down along the inner wire. The lubricating process will also clean the inner wire and housing of debris. Continue to inject cable lube into the cable after the lube begins to drips out of the bottom of the housing. At first the discharge will be dirty, but when you see clean lubricant coming out you are done. Make sure to have some extra shop rags around though, because it is a somewhat messy process.

    wow..nowadays people gets into trouble every once in a while by being helpful..

    maybe it is time to state..that the organisers/participants are not responsible for anything and everything that is being offred here.
    those using the offers of help...are responsible for their own wellbeing .ie damage to vehicles or personal injuries or to third party damages..those with reservation about this arrangement should refrain from paticipating in the DIY/repairs/ or whatever..

    So boys and girls of all ages..good luck..

    1. SBF and the organizers are not liability for any damage to your bike in the unfortunate event that it happens.
    2. You are responsible for the consequences of any DIY that you make to your bike, even if it is offered by experienced bikers.
    3. If you are uncomfortable about letting others make repairs on your bike, you can still come and learn from the experience of others before taking getting involved.

    Yap, organizers have to cover yourself, participants must know the liabilities.

    Whatever happens, no one is to blame. You're responsible for your own actions.

    PK and SBF will not be responsible for any damages caused.

    Organizer is not representing PK or SBF for this event, but he is kind enuff to offer his place for such an event.

    If anyone is not sure any repairs is 100% to go ahead, kindly go ahead to a proper bike shop to do repairs. Organizer or participants will not be responsible. However, if any participants involved know that you are not qualified to offer the correct advise on certain issues, kindly refrain from giving advice on issues you are not familiar with.

    This is a learn and share knowledge event.

    ya....the kopi o chit chat was nice..

    yah my clutch cable was very sticky...can only move the cable via the clutch lever..time to change it..will meet agian next month....

    Does your bike have a rectifier, an engine cover, a headlight bracket and a frame? Yes!
    I"ll question the need for 5! points, sounds like overkill. No harm tho.

    the purpose of the grounding???
    when our bike ages...rust sets in etc etc..all sorts of unwanted stuff starts to grow, fasterners rust, as well as loosen bolts and nuts,
    ie..rust.grime and dirt etc..all these stuff will eventually cause the electrical circuit resistance to increase..the end result is that more power is required to run the the electrical system...
    what this means you run down the battery fast and or your alternator etc needs to run overtime to cover the extra load...end results is just one inefficient electrical system on your bike..ie you will notice it as the system degrades in high FC..etc etc...ya all those stuff that a old bike have..

    so to minimise/reduce the degrardation..recommends grounding..thsi at least remove a major source of the problem..

    well i have seen a 5 point grounding offered by ComFort Delgro...$200+++(for cars)
    basically it has a round disc where all the grounding wires terminates..
    as to the other end...recommends to ground them to major elec sub system..in our bike this would be..alternator, rectifier, head/tail lights, hornsetc...

    Grounding wire..i suppose those u see on the water heater will do just nice (maybe overkill)..any fancy type will cost more..

    if anyone is interested...we can buy a roll of earth wire and the necessay lugs ..
    well pm/or post here if u r keen to participate in this diy..i am sure it wont cost much..

    when our bike ages...rust sets in etc etc..all sorts of unwanted stuff starts to grow, fasterners rust, as well as loosen bolts and nuts,

    for those who came ...a thousand apologies..that it was a wash out..

    to prevent another wash out ..it is best to pm or sms or post here your intentions..

    went to the hardware store to enquire on the ground cable..for 9awg they are asking for $2/m...a small bottle 200ml of rust converter $12. these are xxx prices..planning to go to carrefoul in JB rust converters RM$10..only

    i would look out for jumper cables whic sells from $6 to $15..for a pair of 3m cables..if anyone going to mustaffa or any low price shop please look out for this item and post here the price..yhanks.

    a friend has kindly gave me a bottle...has applied to the exhaust.

    ya..the rusted areas turn black ..
    the other non rusted area...look like being painted with clear paint..

    dont knowhow longthis coating stays onthe exhaust..though

    the blackened area indicates that a chemical reaction has taken place and that area the rust has been "converted" so to speak to one which will not rust in the near future...I think u have to live with it..once removed the area will start to rust again..

    Attempting to start your bike with a low or failing battery is a really bad idea because there is a real risk of the starter solenoid contacts welding closed due to low voltage arcing. If this happens you will have to disconnect the battery (because the permanently closed solenoid contacts will crank your battery dry) and either replace or repair the starter solenoid.

    the rust converter has done its job...but those coating ie non converted area on the exhaust it self is gone..(burnt off without a trace)..

    but i applied some on the exhaust pipe that has scratched and rusted area of the plated area..(for insulation areas) is still around)..but the coating is light brownish in color..and as expected the rusted area turns a dark brown/black sort of colour.

    i used it on my spokes on the wheel...actually painted the spokes one by one..the result is a brownish black spokes..haha dont have to change the spokes and save some dough..
    in fact the brownish/black spokes now have a good "shiny glaze" effect on it
