I compared quotes from many providers and inclined to go with DirectAsia as they are giving fire+theft too which NTUC declines (as the bike is more than 10 years old)

    My questions :

    1. If nobody is ready to insure a 10 year old bike what happens if such bikes are stolen ? Do you get at least the remaining CoE money back ?
    2. In Singapore, what is the theft risk ? (I also plan to goto Malaysia sometimes)
    3. I have checked with NTUC,(ANDA is providing for Chartis and AXA nowadays),DirectAsia. Any other obvious ones I have missed ?
Your bike value very low. Yes Coe you can rebate even with the stolen bike.

called ntuc asked for a quote yesterday, the operator told me that my insurance would be $464. i wasnt too sure on when i would take over the bike(but probably next week) so i just gave her 1st November as the day that i would taking over the bike. then the lady told me that, if i didnt confirm about my insurance by 7 days, she would have to quote again and the price of the insurance might not be the same due to the "premium"? so anyone encountered this problem before can explain to me hehe :-D and lets say if were to take over the bike on 8 october, would my insurance costs like what she quoted me before or its different?

Insurance is like stock market except that it goes up more than it ever goes down. Did you gave all the details like riding experience age bike model and etc?

Hello there, when the insurer asks claim history in the last 3 years, they meant the last 36 months and not counting by the year it happened right?

If they were to ask about claim history, will having a claim made against me more than 36 months ago be factored in the premium?

Just tell them the date of the accident and be truthful because if you lie and things happen, they can reject your claim. I cant advise you exactly when the 3 years starts to count but after 3 years it will not effect.

Phantom body is about 800-1000 now. No point for it. Be careful if you're in malaysia.

Yes you need to buy insurance first. You can buy insurance without become the registered owner, just need to supply number plate and any other information they might need. NTCU, Direct Asia both supports online quotation. Can just google for the link.

Only after you ve insurance then can make the transfer of ownership.

Bros, PLEASE... I feel there are some "lack of common sense" postings going on here. Like:

    1. "How much is the insurance for an RXZ?"
    2. "How to get a quote from XYZ insurance company?"

If the writer has the brains to find the way into this forum, I don't see why he/she does not have the cow sense to google the company website and ask for a quote?

Nobody on this forum can advise a quote to anyone just based on a bike type. You need Bike make, model, age; Rider experience, age, occupation, background, and maybe even residential location. Also, One would need to know if it's Comprehensive, Third Party Fire and Theft, or basic Third Party. Loading for second rider? There are so many issues to geting a quote. PLEASE just go ask the companies and do your own homework.

And if a rider has done so, and wants to show everybody his homework, Well done, please do that and include your personal details because not everyone is the same. So... again, adjustments need to be made.

Let's have some smarts here, please?

    Thanks!

Oh, one more thing... on reading the postings in this thread, we know that there are people here who have posted and are in the business of selling motor insurance. We would appreciate transparency in these cases.

Please cite your company and then state if you are writing on your own capacity or a viewpoint that your company holds. We will treat you with highest regard for professionalism. Don't hide behind a 'common rider' disguise and try to influence sales. No professionalism in that.

    Thanks.

    Welcome to Singapore, SUPERBIKER!

There are a few companies to buy insurance from here in SG. As some brothers already wrote, the largest covering motorcycles is NTUC Income. They are not a normal company but a co-operative. So focus in for policyholders in the long run. Started with lower income population decades ago, so generally covered motorcyclists in a bigger way. My bikes are covered under them.

MSIG -my car was under them for 6 years until the NTUC Income's Orange Force service came round last year. Thought my family would benefit from that help if I'm not with them and car broke down. But for my car, MSIG gave good value for money. Alas, I didn't have a chance to insure my bike with them to be able to tell you.

For bikes, Direct-Asia gives good premium quotes for the coverage. Probably the best around. But they did state that I didn't need to go to a counter to buy the insurance, no need to see anyone. Just buy from the comfort of my home and computer. Sounds good. BUT For me, I am a little adverse about dealing with the computer when I want to make a claim. I want a person to deal with face to face. That's why I decided on NTUC Income. Too many branches around to switch off. They seem to flaunt their customer service promise. I'll take it to the max with them if I ever want good customer service. At least they cite it, so they'd better prove it.

i read in between your lines that you might have company cover. If so, perhaps you might want to integrate your insurances together as you have moved in to Singapore. When i lived overseas, I pulled all my insurance needs together, worked it through an insurance broker who realizes that I have a couple areas of business to work with, then s/he goes and gets the quotes for home protection, personal accidents, motor, blah blah... Compares apples with apples for me. makes it easier. And comes to me. At the crunch of a claim, I don't go to the insurance company, I go to my broker. Broker fights for me and because he has a few businesses with the insurance company, they are more likely to listen. No use if the case is clearly against me, but great if things are hanging on an edge and just needs a bit to tip it to my favour.

i share this from the claims experiences - gains and losses I've had in the past. All the best to your stay in our little red dot! Keep the rubberside down!

Hi whitepomfret, many thanks for your post.

Just to add a couple of things about DirectAsia.com. You don't have to buy online. We have a call centre which is open 6 days a week where you can talk things through with our customer champs, or you can even come into our office at 88 South Bridge Road and do it face to face. Which ever suits you.

The other thing is in relation to claims - we're really proactive with this - you will hear from us throughout the process. You don't have to keep waiting to find out what is happening with your claim. We know how important this is to people, so want to make it as painless as possible. Our guys are only a phone call away, so the personal touch is there for you.

There are often different ways of looking at things and what you say about claims and your broker is one. If you've got a really good broker then they may well work hard on your behalf (of course you are paying extra for that on top of going direct). Alternatively you may find that an extra party may not fundamentally act in your interests. This may well be the case when it comes to selling too - whether they advise you on what's best for you, or what's best for them - that's something that is worthy of investigation and reflection. I'm not trying to say you are wrong, just mentioning the 'other side of the coin' as these things aren't always straight forward.

Anyway, thanks for your really useful posts ... and very much hope everyone gets the cover they need and can rely on.

    take care .....

have you tired AIG? my premium previously is NTUC. but this year when need to renew, they charge me more 100+ (from 700 to 801). I called AIA they refer me directly to this AIG agent. He charged me (3rd party only) 370. so save me by half. just need send them the proposal form, soft copy of IC and license then they settle everything with you. arrange a day go down to AIG at CBD area to sign the insurance and make payment. just from my side. peace.

Hi Everyone, am a newbie who just passed my 2B early Jul 2013 and am now looking around for a used bike. As one of the prerequisite is to have an insurance policy first before buying over a bike (assuming I have one targetted and agreed with seller etc), I would like advices from experienced bikers.

For a less than 3 yo used bike, is it advisable to get a comprehensive or 3rd party F+T insurance? Reason I am asking is because for my own car, I chose to buy a comprehensive insurance for the first 3 years. When I obtained a quote for new bike from Republic Motors, I was given a quote with 3rd party F+T and the sales guy saying, "For bikes, it is quite alright to get just 3rd party F+T, no need to waste money on comprehensive unlike cars".

    Thanks in advance!

Still it's what you want, you kiasu, get the comprehensive.
    Minimal requirement is 3rd party.
Everything still boils down to your own decision and needs.

Did you not ask them what the $53 is for when you were on the phone? Never had a problem with DirectAsia, always had good service from them and evverything is pretty straightforward and transparent.

    'Hi all,

New rider, just got my class 2b license yesterday.

I own a Honda Phantom TA200 that Is almost 13 yrs old w 2.5 years COE left. The bike is under layup n going for inspection tomorrow.

I am 19 years old going 20 as of this year and I have a class 3 driving license (3 months of p plate left, no demerits points or accidents)

Anybody know how to get the cheapest motorcycle insurance around? Any companies to recommend? From what I know, there's AXA, Allianz, NTUC, DirectAsia.

Hi. I have a doubt with regard to the insurance. Should I renew the insurance even if I am not going to use the bike for a while and intend to sell it later??

This is my exact scenario. Currently, I have a Class 2B motorcycle. I want to upgrade to Class 2A license. I can start the process on Aug 15, 2014 since I would be completing one year with my 2B license only on Aug 15. But my vehicle's insurance expires on Aug 19, 2014. I am interested in trading in my current 2B motorcycle for a new 2A motorcycle. Ideally, I can buy the 2A bike only after I get the 2A license. And I do not want to renew the insurance for my current bike since I wanna sell it. So, is it allowed if I do not renew my insurance for my current 2B bike, so that I can trade in the bike after I get the 2A license in hand?? your comments are much appreciated. Thanks.

Just paid my deposit for a 8-year Shadow 400, will be taking it over in next few day after sort out my insurance requirement.

I have few questions on insurance, hope you guys can help me out:

    1. I have been driving car for long time and have 50% NCD. Is this NCD applicable to bike insurance? My guess is not, but I just want to confirm that. ;-)

    2. With 8 years old Shadown 400, is it worthwhile to go for comprehensive insurance (more for theft), esp that I will be riding to Malaysia on and off. Comprehensive (~$470 with policy excess of $600) is about double the price of 3rd party (~$225). And there is this fine print on the theft coverage: "If your motorcycle has been stolen outside of Singapore, we will apply an excess of 50% of the market value of your motorcycle at the time of the theft, capped at a maximum of S$2,000 in addition to the policy excess.". I am not sure how much does a 8yo Shadow 400 body worth, so can't really decide. Anyone care to share? Assuming that it is $5K, the claim seems to say that I can claim $5K - $2K - 600 = $2.4K, is this calculation right?

    3. Lastly, I had my 2B license for very long time already, but only gotten by 2A in May 2014. When the insurance company asking for "years of driving/riding experience", I can assume that they are asking for overall experience (which include 2B) right? For NTUC, they specifically asked for "Pass Date of Driving License", which one should I use? The insurance premium varies very much (i.e., <$200 vs >$500).

    Please help. Thanks.

    1. The car NCD not able to bring over to Bikes.
    2. Not able to advise you
    3. The years of driving/riding experience is since the day you get your 2B for bike, 3 for car.

    2) That would be about right. I don't know what the insurance company would take as the market value of your motorcycle, but there is an OMV listing for your machine on onemotoring. Once you key in the pertinent details as the vehicle owner, it will show up. As for the excess with regards to theft outside Singapore, I previously enquired with AIG and was informed that they had no additional excess for theft outside of Singapore, you may wish to consider that if you travel a lot to Malaysia. This was around 2 years ago and their policy was a bit restrictive in other aspects, as such it did not suit my needs.

Most insurance companies only insure bikes for comprehensive insurance for the first 5 years only. After 5 years , only third party or third party with fire and theft.

    Thanks for the replies.

I finally go with NTUC, which doesn't provide comprehensive for my case. I took 3rd party + Fire + Theft. When doing research, found that DirectAsia does provide comprehensive. I searched for AIG too but motorcycle insurance is no longer listed in their website, so I assumed that they are not in this business anymore. Both Direct Asia and NTUC has 50% excess for theft outside of Singapore, but with different cap (i.e., 2K for Direct Asia, 2.5K for NTUC).

Now all settled and just took over the bike today. Now, I am officially a biker (my first bike, so newbie).... ;-) Hope to join you guys for upcoming gathering or outing, and learn more from you guys. Thanks again for all the input. Really appreciate it.

Hey guys, recently got into a multiple vehicles accident including me, 3 riders behind this car being warned for careless riding. So e car in front of us is claiming on all 3 of us..

Anyway quick question is, if our insurance policy (msig) is being claimed, will my premium for next year be increased? And roughly how much increment? Thanks.

    REBORN RIDER

Was pretty stoke today acquiring a bike after not riding for the last 15 yrs. Before transferring, was told i needed an insurance policy to my name. Was told that Directasia offer the lowest rate thus decide to visit the office down at south bridge road. Ressie attended to me without any waiting and i was ask various questions. I was asked if I will be commuting to work using the bike and there and then but i wasn't that sure. You see, there are various means that i commute to work such as driving, having my family or friends giving me a ride or I take the MRT which i am quite happy with as I don't need to find parking. Ressie responded that if I dun commute with the bike, the insurance will be cheaper. I then asked Ressie to provide me the quote for if and if i not commute to work with the bike. She seems reluctant but eventually gave in. With the differences, i decided to opt for the cheaper alternative, however, Ressie refuse to proceed with my application mentioning that I might take the bike to commute to work. I explain that I will unlikely ride the bike to work thus would like to purchase the cheaper options. And anyway, i do have other mode of transport to work. She refuses and I ask to speak to her superior. However, she is reluctant to pass me to her superior and mention that the result will be the same. I ask for her superior name (Yvonne Tan from Customer Service) and requested a courtesy call for me to feedback on my experience (Will update if she does call). Thereafter, i walked out of the office without purchasing my insurance cause i felt that if trying to buy an insurance with DirectAsia is already such a fuss, I will likely encounter more issues down the road when there is really an accident. "Touch Wood"

Went over to the "Commercial Agency" office beside Ah Boy shop and purchase an insurance with them without much problem. I also enquire about the price difference between NTUC and MSIG which the staff happily quote me.Settled for the cheaper MSIG and was happy to pay even cheaper than what i would have paid at DirectAsia for similar coverage.

I am so happy that I will get my bike soon.

Maybe I am just unlucky but above is my experience trying to buy insurance for my bike.

PS: DirectAsia, this is not a post to shame you but a true feedback from a walk in customer you lost today. You can either take this negatively and view it as an online attack or react positively and change how your frontline staff does things. If being cheap as you claim is about giving up basic common sense coverage, I am afraid I just found a better option for now. Thank You

Lets say the other party is claiming me $2k. Roughly how much will the premium increase? Paying almost $500 per year now.

Short Review on NTUC as a first time independent buyer

Hello everyone, I just got my second bike recently through online individual. I got my first bike through a dealer, so everything was no fuss chop chop but of course we all learn that not everything is such a sweet deal afterall. Nonetheless, I rushed down to a NTUC Income office @ Woodlands Civic branch approx 6.05pm, thinking that I might not be able to get the paperwork done because they are closing at 6.30pm. Surprisingly, the lady provided such prompt service asking only the necessary and without any pauses or wait in between allowing me to apply for a new insurance and a delayed cancellation on my current policy. Paperworks were full and surprisingly comfortable environment. As an inexperienced buyer, this is a very positive experience even though I have not visited other companies or branches but I work in retail line and I know a good service when I experience it. Something cool to add on, the prices online were much more expensive compared to the one I was quoted at the counter ($467 vs $384).

Good luck to any first time buyers. Hope this helps

Hi everyone, I strongly believe that the employees makes the company. No matter how big the company is, if the customer service is below par or even average, it will severely impact the company business and reputation. So please do not be under the impression that the bigger the company, the better the service. This might not always be the case. Most of the times, its the smaller players that goes the extra mile to help you out.

From what I've been researching so far, Direct Asia is pretty good. AIG is another alternative. NTUC is also a good being a local company but the claiming process is usually painfully long and time consuming.

As many peer have already mentioned, the insurance amount depends on a lot of factors. So its best to do your homework by calling/visiting the respective companies and go for the one which best suits your preference.

    Good luck and peace out.

Why not go directly to the insurer and ask? NTUC still got what.
