    for me.. rear ( 230) front (220)..

too hard. no friction to the road.

when i used metz tires, i used to pump 220 for both.

    Hi Guys

some interesting points of view, my Phantom came with stock IRC's and just recently after 17,600 kms the handling definitely degraded. As I am out in the sticks there is not a great deal of choice here.

Wanted to switch to Michelins, but difficult to get. Had a chat with my Guru and he convinced me to stick with the IRC's. I am slightly redfaced about the mileage I got out of my tyres, added to that there was still plenty of tread depth.

Only had one scary moment in the wet trying to avoid a huge pothole, nice rear wheel drift and finished with a 270 degree spin, managed to keep it upright somehow.

The tyres fitted now feel great and confidence is restored, I figure that I will treat myself to a new set every Christmas as they are so cheap.

    Happy Trails

Perfection is in the eye of the beholder Vidak haha

You are right mate, I have learned to ride defensively but not like a *****. In Thailands defence there are a lot of good roads too, but also some horrors. The IRC's new are a good tyre but they do tend to harden, I reckon 12 months is the optimum time to change them out.

    Cheers

PS I was stationed at HMS Simbang in the early 70's and have very fond memories of Singapore, Nee Soon and Sembawang Villages and the Kampongs around there.

    Exclamation Bumps in tyre?

    Hi guys!

I have bumps popping up in my back tyre...

    Anyone experienced this before?

Know of possible cause(s) & the remedy for it?

Looks like it has to be replaced, pronto?

Where exactly is the "shop directory"? I don't see it!

Would like the address to "hkl in Bukit Merah" since I am staying in Tiong Bahru & may need to change my back tyre.

u need to change it asap, if possible dun ride, if die die muz ride, better call tow truck, cuz that is a tyre failure waiting to happen as the internal wire strands embedded in the tyre that is holding the shape has kaput, now its only left the rubber thats holding the air pressure, so i leave it up to you to decide.........

The internal wire is torn.. It will blow if gets too hot from friction while moving as hot air expand. It happened to my car while on the way to tyre shop years ago.

TS -if you could let the rest here know what is the brand of tyre and how long has it been in use... you could save alot of other riders the kind of headache you are having now.

Unless.... you are one those who believe in the equal misery concept.

wa lau.. 1st time seeing it happen on a phantom rear tire...

if you value your life or safety, do not ride it, have it towed to bike shop to have the tires replaced...

i've been studying the "made in japan" and "made in thailand" tires recently, and found the thailand ones to be inferior in quality...

one cause of the bumps, could be riding the bike with extremely low tire pressure.

i pump and check my pressure once a week, and i will advise such practice, it's all part of the TLC for your bike!

It is a Pirelli City Demon tyre. It replaced the IRC stock tyre in March 2008. So it has been in use for 1 year 10 months.

I plan to ride to HKL which is about 5 minutes from my place. Not sure which "HKL" I should go to though, since there are at least 3 addresses on their website:

    Team HKL Racing

    Address:
    Blk 1008 #01-24
    Bukit Merah Lane 3
    Singapore 159721

    Team HKL Workshop

    Address:
    Blk 1008 #01-16
    Bukit Merah Lane 3
    Singapore 159721

    Hock Kim Leong Trading Co.

    Address:
    Blk 1007 #01-05
    Bukit Merah Lane 3
    Singapore 159721

This would be my first time there. Any advice?

the one at blk 1007 is more like a showroom, selling accessories and stuff (only went past but never walk in before, so not 100% sure).

but the other 2 are both workshop and are just opposite to each other only. one is beside universal motor (pulsar dealer), the other one is beside juzzwheel.

Yup, fully intend to change it tomorrow. Don't know if HKL would be open tomorrow though. Tried calling for past two days but they are obviously closed for CNY.

mine opinion of this brand is it is not so good...

at this price, i rather advise you to get metzeler lasertec.. +2 only...

but you already changed it so use it till botak lor... exercise caution when riding in the wet...

Yup, wasn't the ideal choice...but the other workshop was still closed on Friday & I could not do any longer without my ride.

I'll keep an open mind though & not judge too quickly based on pure hearsay/opinions. Will see how the tyre holds up for daily commuting, especially in wet weather.

Shall update & share when appropriate. :Þ

was using metzeler lasertec, jus changed like 1 or 2 months only. my tire went totally flat the other day on day 3 of new year night on TPE somemore, damn scary. went to a workshop at kaki bukit on wed morning cos most workshops still not opened. he recommended me to change to a bridgestone that cost $120. compared to metz, i can really feel more grip though.

    1. isnt tubeless rim not supposed to go flat?
    2. have i been chopped? towing cost $30 somemore. =/

juz got my rear wheel changed today. From Planet at $90. Metzeler.

My previous one was Pirelli. There is something damn wrong with it man. Every week, i go petrol kiosk, and pump the rear wheel tire to 250. But within one week, it got back to 80. I dunno if it's becos I pump too much pressure.

Anyway, the flower got all worn off soon. And i skidded off the road once, during rainy weather.

I hope metzeler will be better

I had great experience with Metzeler on my previous bike. I had a set of unidirectional front and back tyre which gave great acceleration and braking (did a stoppie in an emergency brake, despite having a big top box).

However, the Metzelers I had were of a soft compound. This means better grip but wear out very fast. Which can be a good thing...

Old tyres tend to perform less well than newly manufactured ones (less flexible), and durable, 50,000km "gauranteed" tyres tend to be of a very hard compound that gives less performance.

Since I'm on a motorcycle I'll prefer of course the softer compounds... Better to change them more often than to sacrifice grip.

(But I don't know the characteristics of your mega-sized Metzeler because I don't have my Phantom yet)

According to the Phantom parts thread, you should be able to get a pair at $150.

usually its either irc or metzeler... maybe you can try metzeler lasertec first, then try irc after this metzeler is finally worn out

and no, these tyres are not expensive...

I'm not sure about you gents but my Metzelers seem to have a hard time coping with less than perfect road surfaces. They're awesome in the dry but one rainy evening taking the TPY -> PIE Westbound 270 degree lefthand spiral I realised my bike wasn't going straight and I was starting to inch the handlebar towards the right.

Yep that's right, its countersteering; my Phantom was playing Tokyo Drift.

I'm very careful with wet patches on the road especially if I'm going to put power down on low gear while turning. Public road is not stunt driving school!

If the Pirelli's are the soft compound type I'll probably go for those... when these elephant tyres eventually wear out. The hard compound Metzs last a really long time but I'd rather trade longevity for additional traction.

Owner's manual and the sticker on your left hand swingarm both say 200psi front and rear. I prefer reading the values off the tyre sidewall and decreasing by 10%, whatever that is.

Adjust front/rear bias as needed for preferred handling characteristics.
