    Default Singapore rides

Here's a thread for everyone to put up your rides in Singapore. There aren't many places to ride (or so it seems) so hopefully this will uncover some nice ones.

I'll start off with a ride I did this evening around Seletar area. Here are some photographs for you to enjoy.

No prizes for guessing the location

Well, I originally wanted to go to the Bt Timah area today but the forecast was for passing showers. So I headed here instead. I was hoping to find a place that was not crowded and that is tranquil. I found it eventually and am really happy that such a place still exist in Singapore. Here are some pictures.

The trail is very easy to ride with my big tires. I did have some problems initially getting onto this trail because of big tree roots that I had to get over. I got stuck at first because of a particularly big root. I eventually cleared it to find this gem of a trail!

The terrain is relatively flat and the trail is wide (mostly). It is also mainly dry which helped make it very easy for a beginner like me. I really enjoyed being there today.

I love it when the sun is getting low because the trees look really beautiful. Don't you think that trees look much better at this time of the day?

This is near the entrance/exit of the trail. There is a small stream/river on the right that runs almost all along the trail though you can't really see it in the earlier pictures because of the taller vegetation. There's a little bridge that leads to the other side as well. I did not take that route today.

After exiting the trail, I happened to see this HUGE plane coming in. So I quickly stopped and took this picture. I'm sure this will give away the location!

As I was on my way out I saw two dudes on scramblers parked beside the road. We waved at each other but I did not stop because I had an errand to run. I think they were on DRs or WRs or XRs. Looked good to me!

Alright, that's all for today. Another day, another ride!

No, its not Neo Tiew. I was at Neo Tiew on Monday actually. Was riding from Upper Thomson to Neo Tiew, down Lim Chu Kang, to Tuas...rode all around Tuas...then no more petrol...detour to Jurong West to pump, then back to Tuas, then to Taka, then back to Upper Thomson. Long way!

But today wasn't at Neo Tiew. Its actually on the north eastern part of the island :-)

no problem. there's always a next time

now onto this morning's ride. after checking the sunrise timing from the NEA website, i decided to arrive at changi around 6:45am. that was a mistake because i could already see the sky starting to change colour when i was passing lorong halus along the tpe. so anyway, i rode to changi beach as quickly as i could and setup this shot.

There's nothing quite like morning light. When the cloud conditions are right, it can be really spectacular. While it doesn't have that orange/red glow of dusk, it is magical in that it signals the start of a brand new day. Capturing this light always brings warmth to my heart. Of course, I have to show it off with my bike.

I could never really spend much time behind the camera in the beauty of a sunrise. So I spent the rest of the morning enjoying the light show that was unfolding before me. I then went in search of breakfast. Unfortunately, I was running low on fuel too. I decided to pump up and head home on yio chu kang road. This is how different the light is less than an hour later...not to mention the traffic!

This ended up being my breakfast. Ahh...there's nothing like a well prepared roti prata with a nice glass of ice cold tea after a long ride. No prizes for guessing where this magnificent roti is served!

That's all for this morning! Post your pictures folks...its fun to see where we can go with our bikes locally

Update...I was going get a set of new BMW grips for my bike this afternoon during lunch time and decided to ride into Rifle Range Road since it was just next to Performance Motor at Dunearn Road.

In just a matter of seconds I stumbled upon some of the best curves in Singapore. They are nicely spaced out, some tighter together, some stretches uphill and others downhill.

There are many roads with curves but few spaced out so nicely and with so little traffic. South Buona Vista Road is a nice road...unfortunately it is always heavily plied by cars and trucks. This is a welcome and refreshing road to ride on.

It took a lot of effort for me to stop and take pictures because the riding is so fun! Right at the end is one of the Singapore Technologies plants. All in all, a short but fun road to ride on. Enjoy!!!

Riding at night is nice. Its cool, there are fewer cars on the road, its quieter, not too many people around. There are many good things about riding at night. Oh yes, there are also beautiful lights.

Unfortunately, when I decided to go riding tonight, it was already 1:15am. When I got to the places I wanted to photograph, the lights were all switched off. The old Supreme Courts building, the old Paliament building, the old City Hall, the Marina Barrage, Boat Quay...all the lights were switched off. Only boring looking lights were left on. The roads looked pretty bland overall...but they made for nice B&W shots.

Not all is lost though. I did get to experience my very first police road block as a rider. Nothing special. Just gave them my particulars. I suppose they wanted to check if I was riding legally etc. It was a quick stop...and gave me a chance to get out of my helmet too

I wondered around a little and chanced upon this...I simply HAD to take a picture.

The design and architecture of this building has always fascinated me. And if I had been riding in the day, there is no chance for me to take a picture like this. So this is really a blessing in disguise.

I didn't realize it but time did fly indeed. It was already 3:15am when I looked at the time. So I headed home. Just as I was reaching, I found this and thought it looked really nice.

Yeah, some people might think this is a little too lonely a road but I love it! This is my kind of road. Single lane traffic, no cars, just me and nobody else that I can see :-)

That's all from me tonight. Until next time...enjoy your Singapore rides!

    Hi Scubasimon
Thanks for sharing your pictures - they are a real treat and the subjects are certainly very well-composed!
Are u a professional photographer or (a diving instructor?) is this simply a hobby? (you seem lucky enough to be able to do all of these at some rather odd times of the day - whilst most of us are either at work/sleep)
Do try the very western point of Singapore on your next 'photoride' - take Pioneer Road all the way to the very end onto Tuas West Drive - a real beauty - but do keep an eye on the heavy-vehicles, though.
Looking forward to more of your posts!

hi Chewbacca. glad you liked the photographs. while i did quite a bit of scubadiving before my kids were born, i did not progress to the instructor level. i stopped after getting my rescue diving certification. photography has been a hobby of mine for a long time (check out my blog entry for a brief history if you are interested. i work from home so i can start my rides around 5:30pm normally without the hassle of changing from office attire and all...as for nights...well...i'm a night bird i suppose

i did actually do a ride in Neo Tiew and Tuas area and covered almost the entire length of Pioneer Road, down to the very end, then into the Tuas South Ave 7, back through Tuas West Drive etc. i did that ride 10 August...but i did not bring my camera then. i'll do that ride another time and we'll see how the photography goes.

do show some of your rides too...love to discover more about singapore roads. i've done a lot of driving before (i do that late nights too) but riding is completely different. and on my tw200...its slow and relaxing...hahaha!

What a day! I started off this morning wanting to meet up with someone in this forum to look at his bike at Bedok. Unfortunately, I had an incident which prevented me from completing the journey there.

So after all is said and done, we re-arranged to meet up at 3pm. After that, I did a quick top up of my tank and set off towards Changi for my ride. So tell me folks, when you top up, do you get off your bike and put it on the side stand? Main stand? Or do you sit on your bike and top up? Guess how I do it!

So anyway, its off to Changi. Well, you know Changi as well as I do, I suppose. There really isn't a lot to see. Along the way there, I spotted a few places that I would like to photograph my bike at. While I took the photographs much later (on my way out of Changi), I thought I'd show them now.

First off is this serene and elegant little building that they call the Changi Prison Chapel. I really like the simple design and how the white wall contrasts nicely with those green trees.

Along the road just after passing Changi Village, you will come across this little bridge. Its been there for awhile now and I've never really thought much about it until today. I really like how relaxing this little scene looks, especially with that fishing rod there :-)

So anyway, there's much more for me to find out about Changi...but all I found was a familiar road with a familiar sign...and it is such a long straight road. Not very fun to ride at all...especially with my slow bike. Don't ask me where I stood to take this photograph :-)

I was looking everywhere for a place that I can explore. Eventually I found just such a place and it was HEAVEN! Just long stretches of track that I can put my big fat wheels on. I loved it so much! Much of the track is lined with trees which kept the place nice and cool.

Not long after, the trees gave way to tall, wild grass that looked like mini golden wheat stalks!

And then, all of a sudden, it was just an entire field of them!

I never thought I'd find a place in Singapore where all I can see around me is nature, three hundred and sixty degrees of nature! No buildings, no sound of machines, no other human being! It was beautiful! I had to stop there for awhile to take it all in :-)

Eventually, I decided to head out and back. So its back to the long straight road. When I got to Changi beach, I saw an aircraft coming in for a landing. That gave me an idea to setup the next shot. It took another two aircraft landings to get the shot I wanted...I was glad I took the time to get this shot. I guess the colour could have been better but it doesn't get better than this with that big, grey cloud cover...and since I'm a little embarrassed with the colour, I decided to cheat and make it black and white :-)

I puttered around the area for awhile after that, just riding around and going into roads here and there, exploring, looking out for interesting subjects to photograph and I chanced upon this. I wonder if anyone can guess where this is.

One thing I really like about this place is that some of the roads are really quiet and deserted. This gives me lots of space to experiment. How often can you stand in the middle of the road and take pictures?

The sun is about to set now and I decided to head down to the city to do what I wanted to do last night...in case you didn't read my earlier post...I wanted to take pictures of my bike with some of the city lights :-) So I headed down to the city...avoiding the expressway as usual. When I got to the entrance of Nicoll Highway, I saw that the ERP was active till 7:55pm! Looks like I have 30 minutes to spare. I went into the stadium carpark and fooled around with my camera. It was nice to have time to get creative. I did a few things but I kinda liked how this one turned out. Not bad, considering I did not have my flash with me :-) So can anyone guess what those white streaks are on the tank and the plastics?

So I headed into the "padang" area after ERP went off (at 8pm...not 7:55pm...its some tiered pricing thing) and quickly setup the shots I had in my mind. I was tired so didn't do much...just two shots here for ya.

I alway liked these old buildings. They look grand and imposing. I can imagine how proud the people must have felt when they first set eyes upon these buildings. They really look so good to me! By the way, many people looked at me with strange eyes because of the posture I had to be in to get these photographs...hahaha...but hey...all for the art :-)

That was the last of the pictures I really wanted to take. On the way home, I came across this and I could not resist a quick snap while waiting for the traffic lights to change. I had to take this picture because of how the lights here contrasts with the lights earlier. What a HUGE difference!

Well, that was a LONG ride today. I covered 95km from the point I pumped petrol to the point I got home and it took me around five hours. But at the end of it all, I'm really happy I had the opportunity to do this. It was a day well spent!

See more of my photographs at my SmugMug page.

phone camera can also take pretty good shots these days...don't let the equipment be the reason not to capture the images that you see :-) even my simple e71 camera, and my older 6120 camera works very nicely. just need to know what their limitations are and work around them.

    enjoy!

    Scubasimon,

you're nifty & quick with your pictures! Just read your entry and guess it's too late to join you - as you're probably somewhere in tuas taking your shots by now.

Btw here are some photos from riding around singapore some time ago taken with my 2 megapixel phone camera.

    Default 18 August 2009

After missing the opportunity to capture the sunrise the last two days, I was determined today to enjoy the ending of the day. I wanted to capture (as usual) the way the sun is setting against something recognizably Singapore, as well as with my bike as a prop. Don't ask me why but I am just trying to get my bike into as many pictures as I can for the moment.

Since I needed a place to park my bike in order to take such pictures, I had to recce a spot where I can have peace and quiet while my bike is parked, at least for an hour or so without the hassle of security or police. The best place I could think of was somewhere in Marina South. So that's where I headed!

I got there relatively early around 6:20pm and started looking around for a good spot. It didn't take long for this spot to catch my eye. So I parked the bike and started playing around with angles. As I was moving around trying different things, I chanced upon this reflection and thought it was rather nice.

I liked the dynamic nature of the reflection, how this particular angle makes the three towers come to live, animated by the beautiful light in the sky behind.

As the sun started to go down further, I decided I needed a traditional sunset silhouette shot and quickly re-parked my bike to a location where the background can be framed by the two trees.

The light moves faster and faster when the sun is nearing the horizon so I had to shoot fast, trying out different angles and crops, making full use of my camera frame. This shot, I thought, captured the spirit of the sunset the best. I liked how the lights are distinctly changing from warm orange to cool indigo.

Not long after, the sun has completely gone out of view and the light in the sky has changed to a beautiful blue hue. The street lights also came on where I was standing. I experimented with some different angles and came up with this one.

I liked how you can tell I rode there even though you can't really see my bike

It got dark after that and the lights in the office buildings started to come on. It became very difficult to take sharp pictures because of the drop in light levels. Since I sold off my tripod, I had to hand hold my shots because of the angles.

I wanted to show how the cool lights of the city contrasted with the warm glow of the street lamp that is illuminating my bike. This final picture really showed what we bikers see when we are sitting down next to our bikes at sunset, just having a quiet moment enjoying the light play in front of us.

That's all for today. Show me more of your shots!!

Yeah sure, your riding timing suits mine. My 2B bike too small for e-ways, so tend to avoid heavy traffic timings.

The Paris shots were very nice - thanks for sharing.

Will try to get my camera in order (I'm using a conventional panasonic digital one) and start taking some photos on my nocturnal bike rides one of these days

    Know the feeling, bro!

Here're some more photos taken from trips about Singapore on my rides. I'm sure you all would have guessed where most of them were taken at - Bedok Jetty, whilst one was the moonrise at the carpark entrance below my block during the CNY period and the other one was an odd attempt to capture a very unique sunset along east coast road one Saturday evening earlier in the year when the entire sky was weird golden-yellow hue after a very unusual week of rain.

i have many fond memories of bedok jetty. i used to take my wife and kids there on the weekends and we would walk the entire jetty, talk and laugh, and look at people trying to catch fish.

    do you fish?

wah...you take sunset pictures while on the road...very brave :-)

Yes, it's a delightful place to take the family - the view from the jetty is always perfect whatever the time of day - take your wife & kids there once more (or perhaps the kids are all grown up and want to do their own stuff these days? Mine's still too little, although I'm getting old myself). Unfortunately I don't fish - only done it once when I was a teen. As for the photo taken alongside the road -nope, wasn't doing it while riding (very irresponsible to do something like that) - I actually stopped by the kerbside to take that shot (blinking hazard lights and all)
