Default Seeking Expats and Locals for Day trips and Evening Rides

    Hi All,

Relatively new rider here looking for a community of expats or locals who enjoy going on evening rides or day trips, etc. I'm American and bought my first bike here in SG about 9 months ago, (2009 Yamaha Fazer 600 S2). I got my license back in the states about a month before moving here and was lucky to get it converted to a Class 2 here in SG. I have been riding various bikes since 2005 on trips to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, etc. but never owned until now. I chose a 600cc bike to start with and it has been a perfect balance of performance and practicality. I am thanking my lucky stars I didn't do something stupid like get a liter bike before gaining the necessary experience and discipline...(I was looking at an 05' FZ1 before choosing the FZ6).

I'm looking to network, get riding tips, plan some track days at some point and explore SG and beyond.

dun worry about the stupidity ,
there are people riding a litre bike in singapore and most hardly travel out of the country
even if they do , they never travel more then 100km , one way

What a coincidence. I sold my '09 FZ6 S2 to an American expat in November 2012. He said he owned an FZ6 in the US and didn't want to get anything else. I hope he is enjoying his ride now. In any case, you made a good choice. The little Fazer is agile, plenty powerful and easy to maintain. You spend less time tinkering and more time riding.

There aren't many good motorcycling roads in Singapore. The near part of Malaysia is also not mountainous, so you won't find great canyon roads within a couple of hours' drive. But there are some very nice roads further north. Keep an eye out for weekend trips to these places on this forum.

As for track days, the nearest track is Johor Circuit about an hour's drive away in Malaysia. The facility is quite spartan IMO but the track is tight and technical. Track rental is very affordable, especially if you compare it to what you have to pay to ride on similar tracks in SoCal. I am thinking of going as well, so give me a shoutout when you're interested.

    Cheers!

Hey Rhema83, thanks for the post. So far so good with the Fazer; it has been very easy to maintain thus far. Although I don't have much to compare it to, the front suspension does seem a bit soft and there is no adjustment. Actually, this is the kind of stuff I want to discuss and learn from the more experienced out here when we meet up. For instance, sometimes I feel the bike is loose on some corners and I don't know if it is a riding position issue or in part to do with the soft suspension. Also wondering how to best gauge how far I can lean the bike over in a turn without risking a low-side, and also what is the threshold on counter sterring, i.e. how do you know how much force can you exert before it's too late?

Anyway, I shall keep an eye out for meetups and short trips.

    Cheers

OK, it looks like we have some interest from you guys so let's keep the conversation going and just decide on something simple and easy.
Someone suggested Gunung Ledang (Mount Ophir) Waterfall, anybody been there? Google Maps says is around 235 KM drive.
Have another suggestion? Let's here it!
Just voice your preferences here...even if you just want to do JB or something. I suppose cruising speed is important to mention too, in case we are not on the same page. I suppose for me somewhere in the 120-140 range seems comfortable, but I am flexible.

Thumbs up Cameron Highlands 19-21 April 2013

OK folks, it looks like there is plenty of interest and now we need a plan. I would like to do a ride to Cameron Highlands 19-21 April. I need a volunteer who is familiar with planning rides, or who has already been to Cammeron Highlands before and is willing to help plan some of the details of the trip and take lead on navigation . Any takers???

Anybody interestd can post or PM me your name and number. Once we have a few people we can have a short meet-up during the week/weekend to discuss the trip in person.

First...are there any volunteers who are experienced travelers to the region or who have been to Cameron Highlands before who can help plan and take lead?

I have a Mate's wedding on the 19th. I'm game if its on the following weekend. I have a GPS on my bike but frankly I wouldn't need a GPS to get to Cameron highlands from singapore. Been there but eons ago... Haha.

    http://www.cameronhighland.net/how-to-go.htm

Exit 214 nilai, head toward direction of klia, shah alam and finally Ipoh. It's about 550km and the upward ride is about an hour or so before we reach the summit. Plus minus a little.

The weekend of 26th-28th is also good for me. Hopefully some more people will post their interest here so we can organize. I think I can get another few people to come along as well.

Best time to leave is ard midnite, stop every 150 km for rest and fuel. Most important is safety gears and a gd rest before the trip.

Hi thanks for your advice. I've ridden up north many times and I must say I will avoid riding before 5am. Yes I know what are the pros and cons of leaving at midnight considering the traffic etc etc but I'm not rushing anywhere and I will be happy to cruise at 120 km/h even though my past and present bikes are capable of higher speeds. It is a holiday and you ride to sight see right?

That's just me... Different folks for different folks. Whatever rocks your world.

    Cheers
My first piece of advice would be to go to the Ohlins website and download the owner's manual. Yes, I know, your stock suspensions are not Ohlins. But the physics of suspension setting are the same. Set up your suspension with the help of a friend (in particular the free sag and ride sag) and the ride will improve dramatically. The stock springs may not be suitable for your weight (they are usually too soft) so if you reach the limits of the suspension, you can consider replacing the springs with heavier ones.

Riding before dawn can be quite brutal. I'd say it's not for first-timers unless you are part of a much larger convoy and moving at reasonable speeds (120-130km/h).

Just get to chance up your thread. Hope it is not too late.
My wife and me do riding frequently across the border - possible weekly?
Hope we can have the opportunity to ride together and share experiences

OverallRoute info: GP R&R, Kluang, Jln Mersing, Jln Jermaluang, Kota Tinggi, JB, Woodlands.

This is NOT a " convoy" ride and riders adopt a safe but spirited pace, each ensuring that the guy behind is not out of sight for more than 5 minutes. But lead guy will be at major intersection to guide. No racing.

If your joining, look out for a yellow VFR800 at the GP R&R.
