Default Need help for 2A - Fig 8, Crank Course, Slalom

Hi guys, I passed my 2B six years ago and havent rode at all since passing. Now I'm taking 2A at SSDC and have problem with these courses.

Figure 8: I'm getting better at this after the previous revision, but all this while I tried to keep my body as upright as possible and not use the foot brake at all, as I thought that was the way to do it. Until an instructor pointed out that I have to lean with the bike as much as I can. So I tried leaning the bike and use foot brake most of the way, and it felt more stable, not sure if it's any faster though. So which is better?

I'm also very afraid if I lean too much my feet will touch the ground, or the crash bar hit the kerb. Will it happen?

Crank Course: This one is really bad. I find it hard to enter the course smoothly with first gear, it's either to fast, or too jerky. When on the first line after entry, when I close throttle to change to 2nd gear, the engine braking is so strong that I cannot concentrate on changing to second gear.

I managed to do it properly once, but the engine was so close to stalling. I didn't use any foot brake. May I know what's the best technique to do the crank course - eg braking, leaning, gear changing.

Slalom: I haven't manage to hit any cones before, but I think it was all luck and my technique is wrong. How do you guys do it? Should I throttle when coming out from each cone? Or maintain throttle all the way but make use of footbrake?

All tips will be taken when I take my next revision. Thanks guys!

Just some tips as a 2A learner waiting for TP, YMMV:

Figure 8: You have to lean inward with the bike when you hit the curve, maintain the throttle where your bike is smooth throughout the 8 and doesn't wobble and your eyepoint need to be about 3~5 meters in front of the bike's path. If speed too high gentle decrease throttle, but do not release it fully. Try not to use the rear brake at all until the end.

Crank Course: I think it's your acceleration isn't hard enough in 1st gear when moving off from stop. By the time I change 2nd gear in the first corner I don't need to apply any throttle anymore to the end. It's quite normal for the bike to jerk a bit after 2nd gear is released fully IMO.

Slalom: When you want to go left push the left handlebar down, same for the right side...The front wheel will automatically turn in the same direction. Make sure your body is upright and not leaning forward. Eyepoint I usually see 2 cones in front of me.

Thank you Palladium! I will use your advise for my revision tonight.

Is it possible to lean to much until the crash bar touch the ground/kerb?

Will tapping on rear brake while leaning cause the wheels to lock?

Once second gear, no need to use much throttle, its clutch play.

    Need more speed, release clutch.
Need less speed, press the clutch and/or use only rear brake.

You need to master low speed control by playing with the friction zone or the contact point of your clutch.

Maneuvering anywhere in that speed then becomes secondary.

This one not a problem for me. I just throttle more before the yellow line. Try change second gear before yellow line. Then let go the throttle. Then just play with the throttle to go thru the course.

You sure clutch play? I remember we are not allowed to play clutch. Only throttle and footbrake.
