i have a problem regarding the engine level. i'm riding a 600 yamaha sports bike. i have changed my engiine oil about 1 month ago, clocking to 2000km already. two nights ago, there's a red led light on the tachometer light up for about 5 sec and it goes off again. yesterday, the same light lights up all the way. i went to the petrol station to buy the engine oil and topped up 750ml. is it too much oil? my bike uses dipstick. while riding back, i felt that the bike is very heavy.
what is the problem? what can be done? i tot engine oil can last 4000km?

sorry i duno wads the prob. i dun have a tachnometer..

Just to share some information on engine oil

Oils can vary in viscosity (thickness) at a given temperature. Oils falling into different viscosity ranges are given a number by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). The numbers start at 0 and go up to 60 - the higher the number, the thicker the oil. However, you may have noticed that some numbers (between 0 and 25) are followed by the letter "W". The "W" stands for winter and a "W" grade oil flows better at low temperatures. Non-"W" grade oils are summer oils designed to be thicker at higher temperatures (100C) and keep moving surfaces apart.
This designation system originates in the early 1900s in the USA, where a thin oil was needed in winter so that it would flow easily. A non-"W" grade was needed in summer because the hotter conditions required a thicker oil to provide engine protection. Oils had to be changed at least twice a year - once for winter and once for summer.

Today, with the use of special additives, we can make an oil that will match both the thickness of a "W" grade in cold conditions and a non-"W" grade in hot conditions. We call this oil a Multigrade and give it two viscosity numbers such as SAE 15W-40 or SAE 20W-50. The "W" number describes how the oil flows at low temperatures and the non-"W" number describes how thick it is at higher temperatures. In this case, the second oil would generally be thicker than the first in both cold conditions and in hot conditions (100C) because both of the numbers are larger.
The benefit of having this thinner oil is that it will flow more quickly from your sump to your engine parts when you start the car. This will enable quicker protection and reduce friction and wear on start-up.
Generally, your choice of oil would be provided by the vehicle manufacturer. The most common multigrades would be SAE 5W-30, SAE 10W-30, SAE 15W-40 and SAE 20W-50. The reason for using the lighter grades is that, because they are thinner, they provide less resistance to the moving parts and so provide increased horsepower and better fuel economy. Also, a well designed oil of low viscosity can provide protection of metal surfaces in most conditions. Heavy oils such as SAE 20W-50 can reduce both fuel economy and horsepower and are usually recommended less for modern cars.

Generally, oils of lower viscosity will help to improve fuel economy because the moving parts in an engine will not have to overcome the internal resistance of a thicker oil. This would mean that more energy could be used to drive the wheels or, alternatively, less fuel would be required to get to your destination. This is only part of the story, because although a thinner oil will offer less resistance to movement of the engine parts, you need to have an oil that will be thick enough or have the additives to prevent the moving metal surfaces from touching when the oil gets hot.

i believe tht the different grading for oil 20w50 and 5w..... is actually the thickness of the oil itself, wat i know is tht the older the bike or the more CC the engine the more thicker the engine oil used. the thickness increase with the number of the oil, i personally deal with oil with 10, 15,20, 30 and 40.

nowadays no need to pay the shop to dispose the oil alreadi, i know one place tht actually pays for ur waste oil but the buy in 200 ltrs drums lah. i think ard $5 per drum ah

if u feel ur bike is always hot like always travel jammed road, then u better take engine oil which is 10W/50 & above.

dun care semi or fully syn.

change gear hard is becos i think ur engine oil too much.
maybe u go check again.

bike hot is normal, the most important is the bike sound must not be like machiam high pitch when rev, unless for V4 engine.

lower pitch sound is best.

used 15W/50 okie liao lah.
no need change.

see u always kanna jammed anot lor.
if yes then 15W/50 is still okie lah... hahaha

The msg below was a reply frmo this dude who is in the oil industry, for those who DIY oil change, please read this

>>Apologise for replying so late.
As in my previous reply, I will like to advise as follows:-

Don't change oil yourself unless you know of a right way to dispose off the wate oil.

My address is at No. 6 Tuas South St 2. You can bring back the waste oil to us and we will handle it appropriately free. Nowadays motor tiam got to pay about $20.00 for proper disposal of 200 Liters of waste oil by authorised collectors. You can ask them to dispose off for you for probably a dollar or two.

With the recycling of waste water to NEWater, it is definitely not right to dispose the waste oil down the drains. <<
Yah... i want to dispose my used engine oil properly... but how?? I stay in Tampines... .Tuas is too far for me.... pls advise... thanks!!

Also.. i'm riding Super 4 Ver. S.... how many litres of engine oil do i need? I check from the Delphi S4 forums... they feedback say w/o oil filter 2.7litres.... with oil filter 2.9litres... can anyone confirm?

yesterday, i went to a new bike shop to change engine oil. at the same time, I changed the oil filter too. but the mechanic told me that cos' I changed my filter, I need to add in more than 3 litres of oil (normally, it is 2 litres plus). he said cos' the filter absord oil and so when I take it out, I must replace what is lost. strangely, he managed to pour about 3.4 litres of oil into the bike.

in my previous shop, the mechanic didn't advise me to pour more than 3 litres when I change my oil filter.

How right is the new shop I went to?
Frankly... if i'm not wrong... u can pour 4 litres engine oil in... and your Super 4 would still be able to contain.... so far... for Ver. S.... my confirmed engine oil change is w/o oil filter 2.7litres and with oil filter 2.9litres....

when the engine oil is thin, u will feel ur bike is very light. like can go very fast. but it will not protect ur bike as when the bike heats up, so it is better to get a thinker engine oil.

if ur bike is hot, then use semi syn loh. but most important is look at the readings. better to be 10W/50 and above.

u try using that brand he intro, see if ur bike get any louder anot. if yes, then quickly change back to thinker 1 loh.

i oso using semi syn from motul. 15W/50.

Anyone has any idea on wat does the engine oil specification stand for? example: SAE10-40. ask several motortiams but each tell me different things. Does both the numbers stand for temperature or thickness? if temp, then Izzit in degree C or farenheit? if thickness then the bigger number the thicker or thinner? Ask Sin Boon, G.N.G, Southern all tell me different thing confused!!:

my old bike need top overhaul becos of engine oil... now really scared. tks
From wat i read inbike magazines, if u use FULLY synthetic oil, change every 10,000km. If SEMI synthetic, change every 8,000km.

yesterday, i went to a new bike shop to change engine oil. at the same time, I changed the oil filter too. but the mechanic told me that cos' I changed my filter, I need to add in more than 3 litres of oil (normally, it is 2 litres plus). he said cos' the filter absord oil and so when I take it out, I must replace what is lost. strangely, he managed to pour about 3.4 litres of oil into the bike.

in my previous shop, the mechanic didn't advise me to pour more than 3 litres when I change my oil filter.

How right is the new shop I went to?
I also find in bike magazine tat it is true if u change oil filter, need to top another 500ml of engine oil...
