From wat i read inbike magazines, if u use FULLY synthetic oil, change every 10,000km. If SEMI synthetic, change every 8,000km.
due to singapore weather, i believe the oil degrades in a shorter time.
thus we change it more often

The main reason i believe we change more often is due to the fact that our riding is mainly city type of driving; start & stop traffic which stresses the engine more, hence the engine oil degrades faster.
My own rule of thumb for 4 stroke bikes is
    ~3000km for mineral.
    ~4000km for semi synthetic.
    ~5000km for fully synthetic.

5000km for fully synthetic? Sure or not? Mine 4300km the engine is shouting for help already! Some more when move very rough. Anyway my engine uses only 1 litre of engine oil. I don think mine can last until 5000km.

i believe it's called the drain bolt.... for that it shud cost less that $5/- for all types of bikes... so to all DIYers, next time do get a rachet spanner to open up draining....pls and pls dun just use open spanners... it just wreak the sides and risk being rounded...(more problem). i believe the KIPster wud have to go to the doctor bike for an A&E treatment. No way u'll be able to open it. So good luck!!!

Hope this explanation of mine helps.

You'll want the engine oil to be thin at start-up so it'll flow easier to the engine parts. When engine runs faster and warmer, you'll want the oil to be thicker so that it wouldnt cause too much friction between the engine parts. Hence multi-graded oil is used e.g. 10W-40.

The 1st no (10W) represents the initial thickness of the oil, the lower it is, the thinner it'll be and vice versa. The 2nd no (40)represents the maximum thickness of the oil when the engine is hot. So, you would need to use different grades of engine oil depending on the weather of the country you'll in. For Singapore, there's no need for a grade lower than 10 for the 1st no (as our weather's warm enough for the oil to flow easily at that rate initially) but would recommend to be more than 30 for the 2nd no (due to our warm weather).
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As for the amount used for oil change, refer to your bike manual. For my bike, the value on the bike's engine oil cap is 2300ml. But the manual states that you must add 100ml more if oil filter is changed.

After you poured in the required amount,
    1. start the engine for a few minutes
    2. Stop the engine and wait for 3 minutes.
    3. Tilt the bike upright and observe the oil level indicator and make sure it's between the H and L level.

From what I know, some bikeshops add in more than required amount of oil. If too much oil, your bike will feel slow.

Depends on how you ride..... but I'll guess around 1000kms or so?

Mineral oil is perfectly ok. Generally, change at 5000 to 8000 km or 4-6 months depending on your riding pattern. As a comparison, I use Mobil 1 synthetic on a 800cc bike and change at 10000km or 6 months whichever is sooner.

mineral oil is ok, just that phantoms have no oil filters, so recommended oil change every 2000 km or so, less if you're a bit ks like me ;P

then again, since mineral oil is so cheap, and phantoms only need 1 bottle of oil, you probably can change at 1000 km without feeling the pinch

i agree with u. i'm riding my friend's phantom now and it has this funny steel wire leading out from the engine oil cover to inside the engine cover. i tried pulling it out and i found out that it actually connects to nothing wan.

anyone has any idea how it works? and wat help it does to the engine oil?

    if it's what i think u're talking abt, it's a crankcase breather.

taken and abridged from another thread:-

"The purpose of the stock crankcase breather is to control the rapidly fluctuating internal pressures within the engine case. It is supposed to let the pressurized vapours out while keeping the oil in.

By increasing another breather hole, this will increase the hot air vent but will decrease the breather pressure within the engine.

This is no good as the differential pressure is required to maintain oil sump pressure for lubrication and flow control. more vents = more oil mist lost = less lubrication."

the above is from an aircraft engineer.

Depends on individual.. Some like to change every 5000km, some 3000km.. Frequent oil change doesn't do your bike any harm, in fact its good that your bike get clean oil regularly..

3000km is usually for semi syn
5000km is usually for fully syn

I think that will clear your confusion.

Up to individual, change oil regularly is still the best.. As for semi-synt, 3000km shouldn't be a problem..
