Recently jus change my engine oil, thought of using a better quality one,

so put in oil of 5W40 into my CB1300. After 900 km,cannot take it, can

feel engine vibrating, cannot ramp the bike also, very diffcult to speed. So

change back to 20W50.Any comment from fellow riders,I personally

think that th eoil is too thin.

With multigrade engine oil, the figures (eg 5W40 or 20W50) is not an indication of oil quality. Different brands of the same grade oil will have varying levels of quality.

If your bike is more than 5 yrs old, or has generally had a hard life (some bikes very poor thing man) then, you should use a less viscous oil. Actually, using an extremely viscous quality of oil, like 5W50 is unnecessary in Singapore because our temperature is not as variable as in other countries.

Your mechanic should be able to advise u on the best for your bike. Unless he treats you like a carrot and sells you the most expensive one he has.

Jus changed to Castrol 20W50,my CB1300 fly easily to 180 on the expressway. I think for big CC bike, should use thick oil as they will thin out under riding condition.

Basically, Bike motor oil lies mostly in the region of 20W50... no point using those with lower rating.. like 5W or even 0W.

These oil are generally for car. I guess due to the low rev of the car, Low Viscosity oil are better... Most Bikes run at high rev thus using oil with slight higher viscosity is recommended...

I dono I may be wrong, anyone to enlighten?

The msg below was a reply frmo this dude who is in the oil industry, for those who DIY oil change, please read this

    >>Apologise for replying so late.
As in my previous reply, I will like to advise as follows:-

Don't change oil yourself unless you know of a right way to dispose off the wate oil.

My address is at No. 6 Tuas South St 2. You can bring back the waste oil to us and we will handle it appropriately free. Nowadays motor tiam got to pay about $20.00 for proper disposal of 200 Liters of waste oil by authorised collectors. You can ask them to dispose off for you for probably a dollar or two.

With the recycling of waste water to NEWater, it is definitely not right to dispose the waste oil down the drains. <<
i recognised that. Its from the distributor of FUCHS.

I think the very least we can do for those DIYers, pls pour back to the empty containers and put them outside the bikeshop.

    Something rather strange happened...

I changed the oil during lunch break yesterday. I swear I thought I saw the sightglass was totally filled with engine oil, which is why I said the grease monkey overfilled my sump. Some more the bugger filled in about 2.9 litres of oil (almost 3 bottles with about 100ml left over) with the filter in place (I didn't change it). I rode 30km back to office, then at 6pm I checked the oil level again before starting the bike to go home (and try sucking out the excess oil).

Guess what? The oil was down flush with the MAX line!

Eh? Where did the excess oil go? I sure as hell didn't see excessive white smoke from my exhaust.

    Damn..

Leaking? Cannot be - no oil dripping underneath my bike at all. Some more up till now the oil level remains constant at flush with the MAX line in the sightglass (if leaking, I'd have lost at least half the content last night).

This is a lot of oil we're talking about - something like about 250ml. Disappeared from my sump just like that. Mysterious.

Could it be the oil fairy, who came and took my excess oil away? Hehe..

Did the mech fill up the oil with the bike park on side stand? It would appear the oil has been overfill this way, the level will drop a little when the bike is straighten up.

If you are still worry, monitor the oil level for a few days and bring the bike to shop to check it up for you if the oil level is dropping.

Maybe this is the explanation. Inside your engine, there's a lot of channels, places for the engine oil to flow to , including your filter. When old oil is drained, oil from these places also drain out. When new oil is initally topped-up, engine was not running, thus oil pump not running. Your mech toppped in extra, above max to compensate for later after engine had ran. After riding around a while, oil pump running a while, the 'excess' oil gets pumped back into the channels, filter, etc. Your mech must have known the exact amount of oil your engine required. After running, oil level at max.

If you check bike manuals, they indicate oil amounts to top up when without changing oil filter, with oil filter, total engine overhaul, etc. For people who do not know the exact amount to top up, 1st we top up to max level before starting & running the engine for 5 mins, the shutdown & wait for another 5 to 10 mins. Check oil level, top-up if necessary again.

Run around for a while (your bike), then check your oil level again, maybe it's really leaking or your piston rings loose. Me a heavy vehicle mech. So i know a liitle of the stuff. Just alittle.

    Comments?

Wah.. Reaper, if start engine the for sure the oil level will drop because half the stuff would've been pumped out of the sump to other parts of the engine. Manufacturers always state the max engine oil capacity next to the sightglass. I use that as a guide... but the greasemonkey obviously didn't and overfilled the sump anyway. Asswipe. Then the oil fairy whisked the excess oil away... hmmm...

Anyway, yesterday while driving around KL in my car the oil warning light blipped occasionally. Bummer! I parked the car to do some shopping and when I came back a few hours later to check the oil dipstick... there was no oil on the dipstick! Holy cow, I must've been driving around with an empty sump.

It's that oil fairy again, coming over and making my oil disappear!

or..into your combustion chamber and burn off???

Why do you call it engineer oil? Normally people tends to call it engine oil, but hey, engineer oil sounds so much better...

    I change the oils myself.

S4 you can choose to use semi syn or fully syn. I am using FUCH's fully syn oil. Can order online and if your purchase is more than $50, they will deliver to your house on weekdays 8am-5pm. So make sure someone is at your house to receive the goods or you stay at home wait. I usually ask my mum to receive for me cos I working. FUCH give free gifts too, washing shampoo or basic tools.

As for cheap engine oil, think got someone just posted he selling REPSOL oils right? Year end sale he said. Maybe you would like to try that.

Cause I am now using esso gold and can go for 5K b4 change is necessary. So how often do you change your engine oil?

Of course can leak. Oil filter or drain plug not tightened properly can leak. Gearbox seal behind the front sprocket can wear out and leak oil. Busted oil cooler also can leak oil. Burn off also can happen when your piston rings koyak already or your cylinder walls worn out.

Some bikes don't drink engine oil. But some others may 'consume' a bit of oil after a while. And some have such crap build quality that they purposely leak oil on the floor... like old Harleys (before they swallowed their stupid American pride and learned how to build better engines from the Japs).

After opening the drain plug, Filter and spring and engine flows out...

    May I ask Experts.
Is the Filter and spring Hard to put back?

How and what should I do to ensure that I put it back the Correct way.
Hence ensure Zero Leaking, and damage to Engine.

    Many Thanks!!!

yesterday, i went to a new bike shop to change engine oil. at the same time, I changed the oil filter too. but the mechanic told me that cos' I changed my filter, I need to add in more than 3 litres of oil (normally, it is 2 litres plus). he said cos' the filter absord oil and so when I take it out, I must replace what is lost. strangely, he managed to pour about 3.4 litres of oil into the bike.

in my previous shop, the mechanic didn't advise me to pour more than 3 litres when I change my oil filter.

How right is the new shop I went to?

Whether the oil is sufficient enough, you can tell from the dip stick. Set the bike up right and check your dip stick.

Just beside the small window where u see the level of engine oil, there is an indication whereby it states the amount of engine oil to use with and without oil filter. For my S4, without oil filter is 3litres. with oil filter is 3.2litres.

Not sure about shadow, but should be the same ba. Thus the new shop is right. Oil filter does absorbs some amount of engine oil, once remove, you can pour used engine oil out from the filter. Thus need to replace back by pouring in abit more of fresh engine oil.

Anyway, he's right: the max amount of oil your sump can hold (taking into account the oil flter) is usually stated on the engine next to the filler cap or oil window/sightglass.

When you change the oil filter, use this amount as the guide.

As for the dipstick, I think only certain Honda bikes use it. The dipstick in on the filler cap. I'm told that to use it, remove the cap and rest it with the thread just touching the filler entrance.

Other bikes usually have a little round glass window and a HI - LO mark next to it. Much easier this way.

yesterday, i went to a new bike shop to change engine oil. at the same time, I changed the oil filter too. but the mechanic told me that cos' I changed my filter, I need to add in more than 3 litres of oil (normally, it is 2 litres plus). he said cos' the filter absord oil and so when I take it out, I must replace what is lost. strangely, he managed to pour about 3.4 litres of oil into the bike.

in my previous shop, the mechanic didn't advise me to pour more than 3 litres when I change my oil filter.

How right is the new shop I went to?
Whether the oil is sufficient enough, you can tell from the dip stick. Set the bike up right and check your dip stick.[/quote

    How deep should it be?]
Yr dipstick should have two marks, one max on top and min below. Anywhere between this two is safe...if you kiasu then a bit over max also can....hard to be exact, depends on whether the ground is level and temp. yr engine is at when u take the reading....

but from wat you said, if yr normal engine oil capacity is only 2 litres plus and that fellow put in 3.4......it sounds a bit dangerous... Too much oil can really mess up the seals in yr engine. 3 litres sounds more reasonable.
Even the smallest spark can start a massive forest fire...

personally i think Repsol products have been underrated. i've been a long time user since 2stroke to 4stroke. their fully syn 4T is especially worth mentioning as it is pretty good quality .

but some of my frens wouldn even give it a try bcos they "heard" so much about it...

    As for cheap engine oil

try total engine oil!! semi syn fro carrefour.. one bottle onli $4.30.. 3Xbot not even one FUCH's price..

coz the reccommended oil is 20W40 or 20W50 for my bike...

then read up the whole topics here an seems to me that the temperature W will affect bike a lot, so i wonder if motul 5100 which is semi-syn 15W40(15W50 forgot, either each) is suitable for my bike as the temperature W is outta the reccommended range

    what bike u riding/.?

Being a Thai made bike the recommended for the WAVE is 20W-50 . Frankly for our SG weather, 20W-50 should be ideal. problem is very few premium oils come in that grade. Mostly only minerals come in 20W-50.

For your scoot, you could try Castrol Activ or Esso Power 4T. Just adhere to your regular oil change intervals. You should have no problems.

i have a problem regarding the engine level. i'm riding a 600 yamaha sports bike. i have changed my engiine oil about 1 month ago, clocking to 2000km already. two nights ago, there's a red led light on the tachometer light up for about 5 sec and it goes off again. yesterday, the same light lights up all the way. i went to the petrol station to buy the engine oil and topped up 750ml. is it too much oil? my bike uses dipstick. while riding back, i felt that the bike is very heavy.
what is the problem? what can be done? i tot engine oil can last 4000km?
