@WhyElle Welcome to SBF bro. Kudos to you for keeping at 17 years old FJR on the road, very impressive!

As with most older bikes, maintenance and things going wrong will be part and parcel of ownership.

When normal riding is does the bike feel fine? Doesn't sound like a large problem.

Usually it is caused by:

  • Idle control valve/screw - Turn up the idle to prevent the motorcycle from stalling when coming to a stop
  • Dirty air filter - Engine chokes and thus stalls due to no airflow suddenly
  • Spark plugs - Could be dirty/fouled, get them changed out and see if any difference

All relatively cheap or simple fixes.

P.S. When you start your bike, what does it idle at after warming up?

@WhyElle Sounds about right. Have you manage to fix the issue yet? I'm suspecting air filter or idle control valve..
