Was riding next to a RXZ with open belly pipe yesterday.. my SEI were totally drowned man.... 2-strokers can give Harleys a run for the $$, if we consider only decibel...

Hey guys... need some technical advise...

Is it normal for the exhausts to produce visible black smoke? Its not very obvious, but there is definitely wisps of black smoke coming out from the pipes, visible to the naked eye. Is it something to worry about?

Secondly, my choke knob 'springs' back when I pull it out for cold start.. I have to hold it to keep it out. This started happening today...

Lastly, there seems to be petrol or EO dripping out from my air filter.. any idea what's happenning?

I think I will be going to SunBurst tomorrow (my first visit) to let the maestro there take a look, but would still appreciate the bros here giving some advise...

Oh, one more thing, SunBurst got accept NETS/Credit Card?

p/s: Met Johan OTR today...

Ah Yee at SunBurst will give you all the answers you need, there is a POSB cash withdrawal machine near his shop, so if you have NETS then no worries for doing some cash withdrawal.

He starts work around 10.30am/11am (most of the times), but if you go there early, most probably you will have to wait for his service cause he has to feed his little kitty & bath his birds first.

Hope this will help :p

Black smoke... try tuning the carb for less petrol.. for the choke knob, behind the knob, there is a kind of washer that can be tightened. use ur fingers to tighten it, not too tight or it might break! :p after that your choke would stay out..

for EO spitting out of the air filter, i have no idea but mine does the same!

Nice to meet you too, though we didn't get to talk much...

I reckon you work in the City too? I pass by that road quite often whenever I go fetch my wife from work (not everyday, though)

Nice pipes you have on your FatBoy... :thumb:

Sound to me your fuel mixture is too rich. Dirty air filter and engine ignition timing might be the case thus; you might want to check on those.

Lastly, there seems to be petrol or EO dripping out from my air filter.. any idea what's happenning?

A bad or blown piston ring may cause the oil to thrown up through the carburetor and that is the indication of a worn engine. A lot of blow by will get excessive amount of oil in it, try running a compression test on the engine to see if some valve, or ring problems are starting to occur.

Another common issue is due to an overfilling of engine oil rather than the recommended amount. This will have an effect of overflow oil at the air filter box too.

Some additional history on my 4-yo bike:

I had my intermediate service (8000km) at the dealer in early May. The ignition timing was checked and tuned during this time. I also changed the throttle cable and choke cable due to kinks. If rich mixture is indeed the diagnosis, It could be due to the stuck choke knob, no?

Piston rings worn?!! :giddy: I sure hope not coz my bike has only 10500km on it. Surely HD engines are a lot more hardier than that? EO was changed by the dealer mechanics during the intermediate servicing... Hope there is not a lapse of service in this area..

Thanks for the all the advise nights... I'll take note of these items..

Nonetheless, I'll be getting my answers from SunBurst later.. Hope to see some other wicked Harleys there too..

Back from Sunburst... Mr Yee tuned my carbs FOC and told me everything should be fine with regards the black smoke & leaking air filter. (night's diagnosis was SPOT ON!)

He also said that I shouldn't need to worry about the choke anymore coz I won't be needing it to cold start after he has tuned it
