  1. Based on experience.... (Skip Step 1 if you already have an ideal car model in mind) Step 1 - Initial Search Visit Automobile Megamart or Turf City Car shop to see see look look. Sit inside the car to get a feel. Now the main focus is the feel of the car it gives you as you are unlikely to be granted a test drive unless you showed real interest. Make sure you are ok with the size of the car and it suits your needs, how secure you feel inside the car, the accessories e.t.c. Make sure you shortlist 1 to 3 ideal models Step 2 - Web survey Go to sgcarmart as its now the definitive place where most 2nd hand cars are listed. Make use of the filtering function to check market price of the car. Rule of thumb is you are likely to get between 2 to 5k discount from listed price depending on the price of your car. Take note of issues such as mileage, no. of owners, e.t.c. Through this research you should have an ideal of what is the price range you are likely to pay. Shortlist 1 to 5 cars that looks good to you through the advertisement Step 3 - Actual test Go to the place where the car is being sold. Deliberate show that you have done your homework fully and have a few options in mind (I always create an excel sheet that shows the few options i have, depreciation, mileague e.t.c.). This will ensure that the salesman won't smoke you. Test the car and once everything is fine, negotiate the price. This is just a very general process which is actually very detailed. PM me if you need more information, i can share with you the excel format that i'm using to calculate depreciation.
