Any bike regardless of make if cared for with tender loving care and diligently replace wear and tear parts should give its owner long riding pleasure.... Very often, the signs are there but we dun see it until it's too late resulting in the bike screwing up big time !!! Maybe I'm kiasu ... but I changed my EO every 1500km and get the mech to run thru the necessary checks and faithfully change required parts after I'm convinced that the parts needs replacement :)

Bro, you get a lemon phantom I guess. o_O

I would say phantom is a knight, bullet proof and combat ready.

and Sym lamb are a classic lady, you take care of her, she take care of you too.

So cannot compare directly, phantom can last for 20 years if you take good care, Sym lamb unlikely to last for 20 years but 10 years should be no problem provided you don't ride hard on her.

If you want a combat lamb, go for ltalian scooter, they always over engineered, very expensive parts and alive even with ang mo way of riding, only consideration - packet need to be deeper.

I will think we should start a blacklisted shop list to help our gang, especially if anyone experienced bad service or super sharp knife at the cashier.

Scooter don't need to change oil so fast, normal EO can last 2000km or more, syn oil can last 3000km or more.

Unlike bike, which mostly using wet clutch, EO get dirty very fast, so need to change oil at 1000km for small bike, even syn oil should change not more than 2000km. Big bike can last longer as amount of oil is much more and some have oil filter to capture the dirty particular.

For Sym, you can use normal car EO like mobile 1 or other syn oil, which is much cheaper, just don't use too heavy oil (recommended 10w-40 or 5w-40 or 5w-30), the protection is better than syn bike EO as bike EO add in additive for the wet clutch to work properly, since scooter don't use wet clutch, the thicker oil base is good for surface protection of moving parts and piston/rings.

Any idea on spare part support for SYM?

I've waited a week for a coolant reserve container. No news till now.

Are their parts support so bad?

I've called all the shops avail in singapore. Places like WEDA, Mah... All out of stock.

Who else knows where I can get it from in Singapore?

Otherwise I'll have to ask my colleague to get it from Skudai when he returns for the weekend.

Bro what happened to the container? if minor crack, just patch it since it is just a plastic bottle.

It is not 'out of stock' but they simply don't carry stock as this item probably don't sell a piece in a month. If you can get it from Skudai, go ahead or you can also order direct from Taiwan but rather troublesome. Weda should take order also but need to wait.

Bro, I think you should go somewhere else in future, unless the container totally cracked, there is always way to patch as temp measure. Worst and simplest way is use waterproof tape to go round the container, just left the window area clear so that you can see the level.

The mech say cannot patch. I also think he bluff me. If can patch, at least I can ride until the stock arrives.

bought 2-part underwater epoxy putty. Planning to work on the reserve tank leak for a temp measure until stock arrives.

Talked to the boss of the workshop. told me come back tues, and my bike will be ready. He will find a solution. so far he hasn't let me down in these 10yrs+ ever since i bought my first bike from him.

If the bike still overheats, then screw sym.

Same goes to me bro.. Overheating problem, send to a few bike shops all says same problem.. Top block gasket need to changed, i did changed for godness sake, and the problem stills remain the same... Mine dont have coolent leakage on radiator or hose.. Told the mechanic to changed the thermostat and thermo switch but they insist 90% comfirm top block gasket problem... Did the repair same problem.. Than now what... Haiz..

Thats why i refuse to change the head gasket unless i am convinced, I'm not a newbie riding. Just a newbie to maxi scooters.

Bro so your bike now still overheat?

What is the cause then?

if its still not solved, i suggest you can do this by yourself.

Buy 1-2 bottles of coolant.

Remove your underseat luggange compartment.

Locate the thermostat.

Remove the pipe connected to the thermostat housing (some coolant will spill out)

Remove the screw(1 screw) holding the thermostat housing.

Remove the 2 screws holding the thermostat housing together.

Remove the thermostat.

Assemble back the whole thing in reverse order.

remember to apply liquid gasket (comes in a tube) to the thermostat housing when putting back together

Top up the coolant.

Go for a ride and see if it still heats up like before.

If no, its thermostat problem. get a new thermostat

If still heat up. Then like i say, unidentified problem. probably not worth finding out anymore.

Buy a tmax LOL!!!

Forgot to add. I tested the thermostat in a pot of boiling water.

tied a string to the thermostat and let it sit in the pot until it boils

The water was boiling hot with bubbles and steam.

The thermostat only opened half (partial open)

with only a small opening allowing coolant to flow.

So i guessed thats it. should be it.

Unless someone can confirm that thermostats don't open all the way.

Pls advise thanks

Me too new to auto scooter, infact its my first love auto scooter..

I enjoyed riding it, i love the cruise my scooter gave to me... With 12 ltr fuel tank &

With fuel saving clocked up to 400km till reach reserve.. Im very impressed with my scooter..

Till unidentified problem came in..

I think i should just replace to a new thermostat and thermo-switch and see whats the result..

Hopefully after this, everything will back to normal so that i can enjoy her for the rest of its COE years..

Don't fool by bikeshop, if top gasket leak, EO will leak also, if not the gasket is ok, don't need to change.

The main cause is the thermo-switch not the thermostat, as the thermostat only used to show the temp meter reading and ECU (for fuel injection models), nothing to do with the temp control.

Just parallel a temporary switch across the thermo-switch and force it on to see if the temp still rising? if not, it is confirm the thermo-switch failed. Temp control in liquid cooled bike is rather simple, the radiator, reserve tank, cap, water pump, hosts and thermo-switch and cooling fan, nothing much can go wrong.

The biggest problem for the thermo-switch is the turn on temperature at 100 deg C, which is too high for small bike, this is a design inefficiency, most Honda LC bikes kick-in at 70~80 deg C to protect the engine and gaskets, 100 deg C is too high and leaves little room if the switch or fan failed, I am working on electronic temp controller with a friend to activate the fan at 70~80 deg C, if anyone of you interested, can let me know.

Bro, try not to work on the thermostat unless you are sure, you may ended up break it instead. The thermostat is used for the metering and ECU (fuel injection models) control purposes, not direct control on coolant or temp regulation.

To drain the coolant just need to unscrew a small size 8 screw at the water pump, there is the drain hole for coolant.

Usually the causes of high temp are:

1. failed water pump - can check by opening the radiator cap (when cold) and start start engine, the coolant should circulate with the RPM, higher RPM = faster circulation. If no flow or too slow, it could be pump or blockage in the cooling system.

2. failed fan or thermo-switch - can check by short circuit the switch, if the fan on, the fan is ok, likely the switch failed, if not, fan gone (check the fuse also), need to replace fan and check the switch, the switch should turn on when temp is high by using a multi-meter or circuit tester.

If gasket problem, EO leak will be easily spotted and it should affects the smoothness of the engine and a lot of vibration at all speeds, idling vibration is not gasket but mounting problem or spark plug, dirty valves can be the cause too but just need to go highway for half an hour high speed (90~100km/h) ride the valves will be cleared.

Thats why i refuse to change the head gasket unless i am convinced, I'm not a newbie riding. Just a newbie to maxi scooters.
