Bike still under hire purchase, can add 2nd rider w/o bike shop's knowledge?

That shouldn't be a problem at all. You are still liable for all sums owed to the bike shop (a.k.a. finance company) whether another rider in on the insurance or not. All they care about is that the bike is insured and monies are recoverable in the (unlikely) event of an externality. Is there anything in the financing contract that indicates that you can only be the sole rider of the bike?
