Hi just joined the forums and wanted to introduce myself. I have never been to Singapore but will be moving there early next year. Will surely be getting a bike as soon as I get there and browsing the classifieds for some interesting rides.

I currently have a motorcycle license here in the US and have been riding for several years but from what I have been reading I have to get a sub 200cc bike first as my license wont transfer over. Aside from this site what is a reputable site with pics and prices of used bikes?

Thanks!

This is a horrible intro.

You should mention gender, age, profession, area of studies, amount of cash you have, marital status and gender preference ;D

Sorry I dont fit what you are looking for in your signature. :p

Does anyone know an economical shipping service to Singapore from the US? I have sent 'Balikbayan boxes' to the Philippines for $50 a box and unlimited weight. Anything like this to Singapore?

Shouldnt you be checking it thru USPS first?

And if you are coming to S'pore as a expat with FedEx, they have some kinda boxes scheme that delivers the boxes to your office in Singapore. Get the department secretary to hold the boxes and even monthly subscriptions for you.

If not. USPS, or whatever container you are sending your kitchen sink in.

BTW, some things, you are better off just storing in storage then lug over to Singapore. Or leave with some family and friends for them to handcarry over whenever they come over to visit you in Sg.

And double check on your flight's allowance for bags. American Airlines allows 2x32kg check in luggage, Northwest sucks in only allowing one bag......I think, but they may have changed the rules.

BTW, using USPS, I rather pay on extra luggage to lug into Singapore. I did with 4 army kit bag from LA the year before. Its cheaper then mail.

Thanks for the responses.

Most of my stuff has less value then purchasing storage here in the US so it would not be practical to store. Also in the past few years I have too much stuff and this will be a good time to purge and keep the things I really need. I presume shipping through Fedex or USPS would be pricy and looking for slower cheaper options. I surely will keep my motorcycle gear, spent a lot of time and money acquiring them. :)

i think , u will notice the roads here will be worse then in U.S ...

No prob. I used to ride sportbikes but now more into dual sporting and motards so bad roads is not an issue. I dont know much about the riding scene there but think something like a KLR650, XR650, DR650 would be ideal for me. I like dirt and the closest dirt road (not including dirt parks) is 2 hours away!

Anyway, my list can work both ways. But for Americans coming to Singapore. If you are coming over as a student: These are essentials:

1) Priscriptions Medicines and make sure you bring along your priscription forms, so you can have it re-certify and replendish in Singapore.

2) Have your allergies confirmed, you dont want to tuck into local food and start foaming at the mouth because some ingredients doesnt suit you. Most of us wont know what to do with you, and will stand and watch you die waiting for the ambulance.

3) Your US size 12 dress shoes and running shoes. I heard enough complaints from expats about finding shoes in asia. Underwears & bras if you are size XXX-XL.

4) Mesh Riding Jacket, boots, gloves & armour pants if you have them. Make sure they are for summer wear. Bring your helmet, if its not tinted glass.

5) Have some cash orders ready, so can open a sg bank a/c with a debit master/visa card so you wont keep having to pay admin and ridiculous bank exchange charges everytime you draw cash out of ATMs or use the credit cards. And shopping places here dont take cheques.

6) Go to Costco, grab a big bottle of Kraft Parmesan Cheese (Green packaging with already shredded parmesan cheese you just shake over your food. If you spare me a bottle, I will tell you more.) And if you are a fan of Organic products, get your trader joes organic cotton roll on deodarant in bulk before you fly here.

7) BTW,even roasted poppy seeds to make into your favourite bread.....is not allowed into Singapore.

8) your favourite teddy bear or blankie, but minus the comforter.

9) By all means bring your macbook, ipod, laptop, camera, mp3 & iphone. But leave the chargers at home. Sg uses 3 pin plugs with surge protector plugs, and a higher voltage. So chances are, you will need new charger cables and step down transformers.

Leave your winter wears, autumn, spring wears and ski stuff at home. Maybe a wakeboard if you do surf. Bikinis, trunks, shorts, slippers, tees, and lots of very nice absorbant towels that seems to be cheaper in USA. Maybe one lightweight jacket and pants for important events, along with dress shoes, thin socks, belts, ties & a g string. You will die with long sleeve shirt under your jacket.

Forget about books......have your neighbours kids scanned them at home and you just bring along the portable hard drive.

Errm......did I mention the electricals? Forget about bringing your electronic toothbrush and razors or even the epilator.

Do consider the storage warehouses. There are going to be things, that you wished you still keep, even if its for memory sake. And have someone else in USA has the keys to them, so they can get to the items and post over should you really miss them. Maybe just pack them into boxes with subject titles. Eg. Room decorations, Documents box, winter gear box, winter riding gear box, Old photos, Grammy's hand sewn quilts and so on. My storage warehouse in Sg holds cheapo stuff, but they are stuff that are priceless to me.

BTW, you should cancel certain subscriptions. You wont be able to access them in Singapore due to the IP address when you get to Singapore. Eg. Netflix, Online downloading of movies & mp3 musics. eharmony or even yahoo personals.

Oh.....sg tarmacs are decent. The lines are slippery cos they use lousy quality paint. and the kerbs are high. But the other road users.....are horrible. Dirt wise, yeppers....up north Malaysia.

Nope not coming over as a student, wife has a new job there.

I believe medical is covered by her company, have to double check that, thanks for reminding me.

I am Filipino and used to ride in Manila so know a little about hot weather. My motorcross gear should be ok. Will sell my leather jackets though keep the 1 piece in case I may one day do trackdays there. Saw lots of cool 125 2-smoke GP bikes. Those bikes are rare here and highly desired.

Kraft parm cheese... no thanks.. will be eating Chilli crab everyday! :)

Have you ever shipped boxes from the Philippines to Singapore? If so it may be more economical to ship my stuff via 'balikbayan' box to Manila then to Singapore.
