Need advice regarding rented van.

While driving a rented van, noises appeared at engine area. Contacted rental company and was told to drive to workshop. Halfway thru, engine temp went up slightly more than half point, stopped van and let it cool before driving again to workshop. When reached there, mechanic said fan belt spoilt and engine effected cos overheated. Now rental company said we nvr top up water until engine spoilt and threaten with lawyer letter to claim engine overhaul. wat shd we do?
