ok this is my situation: I'm going overseas for an extended period of time (5-6 months), flying off in feb. I have a bike which i intend to keep, but i wanna keep my costs down as much as possible. I was told that since I'm only going for 5-6 months, its not worth the hassle to laying up the bike and stuff. So I'm intending to just park at my house for the time I'm away. This being the case I wonder if it is really necessary to purchase insurance for the period I'm away, since the bike will just be sitting there and I will not be riding it at all.

My current insurance expires on June, my road tax expires on Jan, and to extend the road tax, I would have to produce a valid insurance cover until Jan next year? So does this mean there's no way I can scrimp on anything during the period I'm away?

Anyone experienced can advise? Many thanks :)

if you lay up now, you dont have to pay road tax and insurance. lay up lasts a year. you can only lay up a vehicle 3 times consecutively. so when you come back in 5-6 months time, just renew insurance, send inspection, and pay roadtax. then off you go.

Yup... Agree with him... And don't forget to remove all the wires from one side of the battery... So when u come back, it might still work... Or u can pass the bike key to your friend to start it for u every few days so the battery doesn't go flat...
