Motorist's leg severed in PIE accident

..A motorcyclist's leg was severed in an accident with an SMRT along the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) on Monday.

The motorcyclist, whom Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said is about 24 years old, had his leg severed after it was stuck between the bus' bumper and his motorbike, AsiaOne reported. An SMRT spokesperson told Yahoo! Singapore the motorcycle had collided into the rear of service 985.

By-passers in their vehicles rushed to the man's aid when the accident happened. In a photo circulated online, the man's leg was seen to be severed from foot to calf and lay on the road.

The motorcyclist’s severed leg was placed in a yellow bag by his side and his helmet was placed underneath his stump to slow bleeding, an eyewitness who wrote to STOMP said.

SCDF said they were alerted at 5:54pm to a road accident on PIE towards Jurong, after the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) exit.

The rider was conveyed to the National University Hospital (NUH) at 6:30pm with leg injuries and was in an unconscious state, the Police and SMRT said.

There were about 40 passengers on board the bus during the time of incident and they were transferred to the next bus to continue their journey, SMRT added.

Investigations are ongoing.
