Recently my Honda Shadow 400 all of a sudden could not start when I press the push button. There is light & everything which indicates battery is ok.

1st thing was to check the spark plugs which I disconnected the cables & chk if wet or connection issues, none.

I tried to press the push button a couple more times & occasionally was able to rev but unable to start....after a couple more tries, I managed to get it to start. I turn back off & tried again, same issue of unable to start.

Initially I suspected the starter unit which I checked & physically appears ok.

Thus I send the bike to a shop to check & they confirm it is the push button switch prb. The shop quoted me $150 which I find very expensive.....checked with another bike shop in AMK by phone & quoted me $100.

I decided not to do it yet & rode my bike back home....the push button switch is intermittently unable to start.....

after googling the internet, found someone mentioned about using WD40 to clean...so I decide to do that.

Dismantle the push button switch unit & did see alot of black carbon at the contacts. I sprayed WD40 & clean the unit well. Fix back & Viola! it is working normally again!!!!

Damage : $25 to bike shop for diagnose of the prb.

Save : $100+ ...

All other bikers there, u can also try it as well. The push button switch unit seems to have prb over time....like years of usage, seal no good & moisture goes in & oxides the contacts..etc.

Previously my on/off switch cause occasional bike loss of power during riding, got worse when raining. Bike shop overide the on/off switch for me.
