I will be moving to singapore in july to take up a job offer there.

My question is ( im sorry if this has been posted before but i couldnt find it )

How would one go about to owning a bike in singapore.

Is it expensive? ( relative) what is actually involved , insurance , coe , loans etc etc. If i were to take a loan would it be with the shop? or would it be with a credit company. And the licence bit.

Im askin because i heard that owning a bike is comparatively cheaper than here. ( malaysia )

any help wuold be greatly appreciated.

Im looking for a rad tad mean streetbike. maybe the new honda hornet 1000.

Being a Taiwanese working in Singapore, I can share some, but not all the information with you.

To own a bike in Singapore, you must have a valid driving license... First you might want to look into the conversion from your local driving license(Malaysia) to an International Driving license (PS: I am not sure whether this is applicable in your case, but it is for mine)... After the conversion, take a theory test in the driving centres and pass it... Upon passing your theory test, you can convert your foreign license to a local driving license... Most prob the TP will only give you class 2B as according to my last enquiry.. the TP replied: We only give 2B to Asian countries

Anyway, now you have the license, you can purchase the bike!

First, source out the bike you wish to purchase, and whether it is BRAND NEW or 2nd hand...

My first bike was a 2nd hand bike, and my second and present bike is a brand new bike.... Generally, if you wish to purchase a brand new bike, chances of you taking up a loan is higher and therefore there are more things to take care.... On the other hand, 2nd hand bikes do not really require you to handle extra steps as they are considerablly cheaper (Kinda obvious.. haha)

Here is the breakdown of the documents that you will/might need:

1. valid Singapore driving license

2. valid Singapore IC (Pink/Blue)

3. Work permit/Employment pass if you are not a PR

4. Pay slip from your company (if you are planning to take up a loan)

Basically the bike shop will prepare tons of paper/document for you to read and sign.... After reading them through and signing the proper places, the bike shop will process the document for you... then you just have to wait for the call from them

Breakdown of the $$$ part:

1. Machine price

2. COE (damn ex nowadays... -.-")

3. IU (good to have one)

4. Agreement fee

5. Misc. fees like the license plate, LTA donno what and all that

Most of the time you will have to down a certain % of the MACHINE PRICE... however, this varies depending on the situation...

I believe I missed out a lot of things, but I hope this can be a rough guideline for you and fellow forumers will be kind enough to provide more detail
