Hi all, I'm riding a GSX400R.

I recently changed my water pump and radiator hoses.

Lately, I notice a sweet smell when I'm riding, and when I checked my bike earlier, I saw greyish black gooey stuff dripping down from my clutch housing, on my water pump cover and a bit on the hose connectors near that.

I didn't touch it, but it does seem like engine oil, because I dont know of any substance that could be in that area.

I checked by bike when it was cool, and it appeared as if the substance was beginning to harden a bit

Any idea what could be the problem?

The cooling system piping (read: coolant water) is routed around the bike and very near the engines to cool it down.

Something somewhere inside may have been broken or jammed such that the coolant water spills over to the engine oil. This gives the resultant 'gooey' mixture that you've described a grayish colour.

Some describe the mixture as 'milky' in colour.

You need to get your cooling systems checked, as well as your coolant/oil pump(s) as well. Gasket(s) may be broken or the pumps aren't working.

I'm not sure about the parts that constitute the GSX400R's cooling system but for mine, hoses cost around 50 onwards and a oil/coolant pump combo for my RVF cost me around a few hundred. Add a few tens of dollars if your mech needs to change the gaskets.
