I'm sure by now you're all aware of new ARF scheme, and the price surges it's caused.

 

We need to come together as one voice to protest this unjustified increment in prices.

Jut to share, this is what I wrote as the reasons of signing the petition.

 

"ARF for motorcycles is unreasonably high now. Motorcycles with higher OMVs are those heavier bikes with better braking and stability, they are also bigger and are therefore more visible on the roads. As the price of motorcars in Singapore is notoriously the highest in the world, where even a small Malaysian-made Perodua Axia which costs only RM 35,000 (S$11,290) in Malaysia, costs an hefty S$70,800 here!

Middle-income Singaporeans aspire to own cars, but if cars were intentionally made expensive by government, then at least spare a thought for this group of people and let them have an easier time owning a bigger bike. These bigger bikes does not contribute to much traffic congestion (in fact with their higher speeds, it may REDUCE congestion).

Why does the Government of Singapore like to break the dreams of middle-income men?

By making big bikes difficult to own, the government is pushing these group of people to :-

1) buy used , small cars (this will create congestion)

2) buy a smaller bike (this may reduce safety),

3) take public transport (this is near impossible)

Hence, may I humbly request the government to rescind the new tax or at least , reduce it.

This tax is really killing the passions of touring motorcyclists!"

I would like to state some more points not frequently raised here:-

1) While it is true that the big-capacity bikes have OMVs similar to cars, it MUST be recognized by the authority WHY this is so before JUMPING into WRONG CONCLUSION and making UNSOUND decision and consequently getting unintended results.

 

1) Big bikes are usually made in MUCH SMALLER numbers as compared to cars of similar OMVs. Let us compare Honda Goldwing and Honda Civic, both are from the same company and have very close OMVs, but Goldwings are produced in a MUCH SMALLER number than Civics. Due to its small number, manufacturers do not use much automation when making motorcycles, especially big, high-end ones. The components like engines, transmissions, doors and wheels of a car are fitted by robots whereas for motorcycles they were assembled by workers. So of course the production cost (therefore OMV) of bikes are higher than that of cars even when we are comparing the same values of components.

 

2) Motorcycles in Singapore CAN and WILL NEVER be LUXURIOUS, regardless of how, big, comfortable, powerful and technologies loaded they are, simply because of our climate. Singapore is very humid, hot and has many thunderstorms throughout the year. When you ride an expensive bike (eg. Honda Goldwing, BMW K1600 GTL , Triumph Rocket III etc), you will still sweat when caught in traffic lights in a hot day, you will still get drenched when it rains heavily (very often in Singapore), you still smell the exhaust of your own bike and other vehicles near you, you still do not have air-conditioning, your cloths wll still get dirty by the end of the ride, you will sill get hurt or died when there are debris or oil on road, or when tree and lamp posts fall on you, or when you get into an accident with cars/lorries/buses, regardless of who is at fault. How can you classify this type of machines to be luxurious? Can the ministers come and ride a "LUXURIOUS" bike for 1 year then comment?

 

If you do not know the ground, don make decision just purely base on number, this not only make you look stupid but has unintended consequences. Getting votes aside, you may still not get the increase revenue you hope for, you may end up getting the same revenue or worse lower venue because many potential high-end bike buyer may switch to lower end bikes.

when they say "luxurious" they mean, NOT bread & butter (low end, a to b, for transport) bikes

The petition to save the monkeys in lower kent ridge park has more than 4 times the number of supporters to save bikers from ARF.

 

perhaps the higher ARF has indeed helped more bikers buying bread & butter bikes as we see COE prices coming down.

 

pity those who intend to have a few Ducati superbikes, BMW enduro, Harley cruisers, KTM scramblers & classic vespas in their garage/carpark

nothing stays low in singapore. once the ARF period is over im guessing the govt would raise whatever cost back up.. eventually all prices would goes into revenue again
