guys anyone know what potential huge problems to look out for if i'm buying a hurricane? like rectifier, blown gaskets, fuel pump n stuff?

thanks

Doesn't really have any more problems than Fireblades as they are very similar. I have a hurricane over here which I bought quite cheaply.

Basically I have found with lots of the 400cc bikes i have looked at here be prepared to spend some money on maintenance as soon as you buy it, whether you buy a $5k fireblade or a $1k hurricane probably still want to do the same things as many owners seem to let the more expensive servicing items go and these are the ones that will kill your engine.

Some things there is no easy way to check like valve clearances except for taking to a shop to get it don so here are 2 lists, things to look out for and things to get done if you buy it regardless if you want it to last:

Look out for:

Blowing smoke of any kind

Check the oil, see if it has a milky consistency, if it does head gasket is gone

Check the radiator and associated hoses aren't leaking and have coolant in them

Check for oil residue on the fork sliders from leaky seals.

Check for brake fluid leaks from the front and rear mast cylinder

look for oil leaks or coolant leaks on all around the engine

Check for strong petrol smell when standing (carbs will need servicing)

Check that the gear engage cleanly with no grinding

Have a ride and run it right out to the red line, it should pull all the way and click into gear easily each time you change up.

Ride around some corners and make sure that the steering is smooth (steering head and possibly wheel bearings need replacing if not)

Look for any damage on the frame which could indicate a BIG accident (little marks generally ok)

Check condition of chain and sprockets

Check condition of tyres, 18" rear tyres can be hard to get so order in advance

Check condition of the discs, if they are uneven and much thicker on the edges then they probably need to be replaced.

Things I would budget for on a Hurricane regardless of the above:

New tyres even if the ones on there still have tread (I want the tyres I like so I feel confident and happy riding)

New EBC HH front brake pads

Steel Braided Brake lines

Brake fluid bleed front and back

New chain and sprockets

New throttle and clutch cables

New fork seals and fresh 15w fork oil (stiffens front end up a bit)

Carbs completely serviced, cleaned, tuned and BALANCED

Valve clearance check and adjustment

(often skipped by cheap owners!!)

Cooling system flush and refilly with fresh coolant

Oil and filter changed

Fuel filter installed

Air filter replaced/cleaned.

How much all that will cost you depends largely on how much you can do yourself and the condition of the bike when you get it. If the last owner looked after it really well and actually did all of the servicing things like the valve clearance check will be much cheaper as well the carb servicing.

wat's the different between main jet and needle jet?i read it in the haynes manual...yup mines a R model.

pilot jets are for low rev below 5k rpm and main jets will be use wen u open above 5krpm which both are actually used to control the petrol consumption

Hardly a pro but I have pulled a few of these bikes apart on many occasions and you get to know a few things.

This Friday I probably cannot make it due to work but I would really like to meet up with all the other CBR riders at some stage.

I had one idea about a place we might all meet up some time in the future though. I live in Condo's near Alexandra road and there is LOTS of free parking either out side or in covered carpark where we can park all the bikes and have a look and a chat, I am happy to provide some drinks and snack foods and stuff for us to eat and chat. I also have some tools so if there is something small you want checked out or adjusted or anything we can do that too.

It's just a thought if anyone is interested.

haiz i was prepared to fight with them but after my lawyer analysis, said chances are slim no doubt I have my fren as witness. unless the staffs at the bikeshop are willing to testify against their own compy or my chances are at losing point. No point wasting my money to fight against them...........
