Sorry a noob question... if I get a phone with a 3.5mm earphone jack, is it only used for listening to music or can it be used to answer calls as well? :?

Even the smallest spark can start a massive forest fire...

It would depends on the phone.

 

On my previous phone, the Motorola Motorola ROKR E2, it's a standard 3.5mm socket, the original stereo earpiece comes with a mic, so you can listen to mp3 with it and you can also use it like a regular handsfree kit.
