hi all, im running a hornet 250 (inline 4 engine)

i recently tried maxima fully syn 15-50w oil, i wanted to try out a 50w cos i heard using a oil with a thicker viscosity would lower engine noise.

and yes it actually does.

while i understand there is possible problems of the oil not being able to reach tight clearances within an engine, and possible issues with the oil pumping. my bike's manual does state it can use 50w oil, and it runs well on it, no problems with overheating.

however recommended spec of oil in the manual is 10-40w. which i heard is better for a higher revving engines, which i guess hornets will be the case with redlines at 16k.

so the question is : would this "heavier" oil affect top speed? tried googling around and saw overseas forums saying it would only affect smaller cc engines.

hmm, smaller cc is a broad term though.

so any oil experts can clear this up for me? would a "heavier" oil affect the top speed of a bike? or specifically, my 250cc inline 4?

all in the theoretical pursuit of knowledge of course

theoretically, all engine oil will affect ur top speed.. top speed is govern by the peak power produced by the engine. by using higher viscosity engine oil, more energy is wasted to overcome the higher shearing forces of the heavier engine oil.

to what kind of extent will the viscosity affects power is sumthing i cannot quantify. The values lost may be so small that we could neglect the effect of it..

note that your rpm relates to your top speed. If you are still able to hit the same max rpm with the new oil, your max speed should be the same. the rpm of cylinders is transferred directly to your tyres rpm. so heavier oil is likely to affect acceleration but not top speed.

The first thing I noticed when I switched to 5W-50 from 10W-40 was dropping in my bike’s idling rpm.

Even after the engine is fully warm up, the engine idling speed dropped about 10% when I run a higher viscosity oil.

I never have the guts to push my bike to top speed so no comment on that :thirsty:

well at high revs,my bike rpms actually start tapering off at the highest gear.

ill change back to 40w next and see if theres any difference.
