stop wearing converse. i wear my nikes for bike lessons, even with the thick soles, the sole wore out. converse wouldn't last. if you really want more protection, i recommend riding boots. what could be better than the real deal? anyway converse are definitely out. even nikes wouldn't last that long.

boots are the best i believe..

i saw some wearing their SAF boots. water proof some more, so when at the e-brake area the shoes and socks also will not get wet.

Although I wore converse (my all time favourite kicks) throughout my lessons and even for my TP, i strongly advise against it. In rainy weather converse have little grip. You will find your feet slipping off the footpegs or footbrake and even skidding on the road when you put your foot down.

I think choose any pair of shoes with good rubber soles which grip well. After awhile, you will definitely get used to changing gears no matter how thick the sole is. It's also better protection for your feet. :thumb:

Ah Min street shoes mean those kind of trendy/sporty long, slim shoes that are mainly for walking not for running....they have thinner soles, maybe the grip not as good as sport shoes. You can tell the difference if you go for lessons and it rains....hehe..... sport shoes are ok for biking....just have to get used to it. The grip for that is better =)

talking about shoes....haha...a bit :offtopic: but just to share with you guys and gals....remb last time my pract 1 there was this gal i noticed was wearing light green wellington boots( layman term would be the kind of boots the aunties/uncles wear in the wet market, especially those vendors selling fish). Going round and round in the small circuit...i was like 'wah, damn pro....first few lessons wear boots already...so sut man' but on our 2nd round when we stopped at the stop line, she didn't just stop...she flew off the bike past me!! Think she squeezed her front brake too hard. This happened a few times during the lesson until the instructor scared of her also...kept following her around and asking her if she was ok when she fell, helping her with her bike also.

Moral of the story i guess (if there is any) ...for riders, your riding skills matter a lot more than riding gear, although when the inevitable happens, riding gear does save your skin, quite literally. Poor gal, i felt quite sorry for her..

Come to think of it now...i wonder whether it could be that the instructors lent her the boots as she was wearing inappropriate footwear rather than she wearing her own boots

read from previous posts tat some of them fall when learning bike n the bike landed on their leg, injury quite bad n swollen i tink they also wearing converse shoe / normal shoe.. tat,s y mi having fear of my converse shoe..

my fren said the golden mile $40 boots is ard 2 inches above the ankle so i tink for learning wear tis shld be quite ok..

Whatever makes you comfortable and allows you to handle the bike well lor

To prevent injury to legs etc when falling (my opinion applies to learning bikes@driving centres lor), don't grab the bike even tighter and fall with it, or worst, try to prevent bike from falling when it has gone over the CG (ie the point of no return). Just let it fall coz prob already cannot prevent it. For me, if it's a static fall (fall due to lack of acceleration), will just stand up partially lor. Coz of the crash bars, normally if you get your legs out of the way, should be ok.

But if buang at high speed and no time to react...den bopian lorz :giddy:

Any seasoned riders want to comment on preventing legs from becoming roti prata if you fall outside? :cheeky:

But your own bike fall and get scratched - a bit the heart pained lor

For myself, regardless of riding with ssdc or on my own now, if i know there is no way i can save the bike from dropping, while in motion... i will dump the bike and jump clear. Always save yourself first, bike can come later!

As was once told to me by an SSDC instructor: Drop bike OK, just don't drop yourself.

i know a bit offtopic

juz sharing what i have seen

there was once when i was getting ready to do the narrow plank, then the lady in front of me started her challenge....she was going a bit slow and thus she began to wobble incredibly on the plank. Not surprising, the bike got off the plank to her left..

what is amazing is that she never gave up.... with the front wheel very near to the side of the plank, she turn the whole handlebar to the right like making an u turn in an attempt to get up the plank....

she did get onto the plank, but within 0.05 second, she also fall incredibly...

wanted to help her up, but if i dismount my bike, immediately failure for my TP....

so LL.

Oh gosh! eviansg, was she hurt badly? This gal - doing RC or TP test? If test sure gone liddat...some more fall until so jia lat. Sometimes going off plank also like falling.....if really going off no point trying to stay on....end up will fall badly coz adjust back too much or too suddenly will lose balance...if practise, juz go down lor....test or assessment...bopian have to try to stay on.

I once saw a guy going lesson 5 assessment when i doing revision. He went off the plank right in front of me. I was behind him and I was just shaking my head lor.....coz i know gone liaoz...

:giddy:

wah eviansg, i reallie wonder, if you in the heat of the moment juz got off your bike to help although on test, the tester can juz cold-heartedly fail you mehz? Failed for being gentlemanly  But i know how you feel - want to help also cannot help......got gals fall badly in the middle of figure 8, I also contemplating whether to get off bike to go help coz no instructor around...den she reallie cannot lift the bike lorz....jam up the whole figure 8 there....her fren behind her also hesitating wondering to go or not...but lucky got an instructor run up juz den :cheeky:

i salute her "never-say-die" attitude, haha....

but never once did i thought i was not a gentlemen. haha...

also met a gurl who fall everytime she turns around in the small circuit.. until the last 15min when she told the instructors she wants to give up....

i hereby, encourage all 2B learners to perservere on. the lisence will come to you one day...(juz that dunno when)

i speaking from my own experience and riding habits

i believe there is a stop line which you need to stop before doing the narrow plank... i alwaz stop a bit further behind the stop line so that when it is my turn, i have a further distance to control my bike to get onto the centre of the plank....

secondly, look about 60 degree forward/downward to see the course u are going.

third and very very very extremely impt, grip the tank tightly

fourth, muz be able to control the trottle and half clutch well. dun be afraid of going too fast, being faster than the timing is way way better than having immediate failure...

lastly, i suppose confidence played a part as well...tell yourself it is onli for about 7 sec( dun remember the timing required)

look far ahead, grip tank. it's better to get points than immediate failure. the required timing is 6 seconds.
