How have you come to a conclusion that it has overheated? Overheating and engine oil leak are not commonly closely related issues, can you identify the source of leak and that air cooling shroud is intact?

I would suggest you have a professional look at it and come back here for advise if in doubt.

Scooter Tuning Is Not A Crime.

Hi guy.

I currently riding a kymco super8 scooter everything is good for this bike . But everytime I rode the bike for a est 15km journey, it's overheated the bike and cause some engine oil leak. This bike is a air cool type. Isit normal for a air cool bike or my engine gasket is wore off need a overhual.

Any guys got tips for me . Thx

How u know its overheated? because of the engine oil leak?

Where is it leaking from? The oil drain bolt? Your top gastket?

How long did u ride and at what speed then u suspect the bike is overheated?

Any other symptoms like the bike become rough or noisy when riding after its hot?

How old is the bike and when did start having this overheating symptoms?

Need to be clear so that someone who knows can give u direction if not its like anyhow guesswork.

The bike start it life on 2008 dec. And i got this scooter less then 2mth .when riding at 100km/h, i should hear a noise coming from my gear box (maybe it time to change the roller and belt maybe clutch side too) if I not wrong ;) The leakage came from the bottom part where the bolt area are. (Just abit of engine oil) When there is a stop I can feel hot air coming from my left leg area near the airbox pipe.(suspect is overheat) this is my first scooter bike . Still a scooter nood . Sorry for trouble some scooter bro here. ;)

yes true that all bikes will be hot after riding a while. But if u could find exactly where the leak is from then the problem could be isolated

n ppl who know more in this forum could advice u.

Hot air coming out from the airbox pipe?? The exhaust pipe is not connected to the airbox. If hot air is coming out of your airbox well how did that happen? Cos your airbox is supposed to suck cool air while u are riding into the engine.

If u mean the exhause pipe part connected to the engine is coming out hot air ah now it could be the exhause gaskets are out n it could be the cause of the oil leak.

If it is oil leaking from exactly the drain bolt then it could be the drain bolt could be worn out by some mechanic who did not know how to fix it back properly in after filling up the oil causing the bolt to wear n leak happen (always happens but not a big prob)

If u trace the oil leak back to somewhere to the water pump, then it could be the water pump oil seal or mechanical seal spoil so need to rebuild water pump.

If the oil leak is traced to your gaskets, hmmm this could be other problems inside your engine itself so the only way is to get mechanic tear it up.

My advice go buy a degreaser and spray all over the engine till it looks clean and then ride it around n check where the leak is coming from. Some oil leaks are damn serious n need immediate attention and some can last for weeks n months as long as u top up engine oil it will be ok but still it needs to be fixed.

i think so air filters uses oil to trap dust, not sure if urs is the 1 or maybe filter just too old

maybe brand of filter n model will help

yup, air filters needs oil on it. Even KnN filters have the clean and recharge solutions when u DIY your KnN sir filters. If your air filter is totally dry its also not good. What most mech do is wash the air filter with kerosene, degreaser, petrol etc n then after it dries soak it in some engine oil but not until its dripping with oil, just enough n then fix it back it in.

btw i do not ride your scooter cos i ride a burgman 400 n i too do not have much experience in scooters cos this is my first scooter after riding mostly scramblers up to class 2 but with a little bit of trying to find out n researching, i start to find out things n sometimes fix most problems myself.

The best knowledge is the service manual of your bike, if u could, search the service manual online n try to figure out. Next step is to join technical forums on the net that caters to your bike, usually are overseas forums.

I've noticed that in SBF many ppl do not really share technical things here just maybe riding kakis etc n bike specs so this forum is not laden with technical info much. Just my POV but i could be wrong.

Wow air fitter need to put some oil ... thx for sharing this tips.. my prev bike honda nsr 150 my mec also didn't put any oil on the filter too...

Thx thx .. learning new skill..

Btw 1 connecter can it put 1 slot for ign switch&voltmeter and 1slot for 2big horn(prev owner install)&iu machine) ... will it cause leak of electric? As just now I try to rewire that connecter with all the following above as prev mec doing the wiring not so good . Becos recently I install a voltmeter (1 day it works great but following few day the display show something like disco light (lol) when the engine is on. (When engine is off voltmeter works normal.)

Aft rewire the voltmeter improve alots but still have some disco light when it's at stop. (Maybe short of electric)

So how do u think bro ; )

Which degreaser is the best? Water base or oil base? .. btw I check my oil cap once a week but till now the oil lvl still very high. But don no why there is a leakage.

Will try a normal degreaser when the next washing bike time ;)

Any degreaser should be fine. My advise is don't spray directly on the bike. Get a cloth and apply using it. Wipe clean the affected area. Too clean the bike will get rusty, and moving parts should be oiled.

If you really have a major over heating issue. The bike would have stalled or got piston jam.

Also to add on. check that you have the correct amount of oil. If too much maybe just over spill when running

Not every filter needs oil, if I not wrong, original air filter usually no need oil, only selected after market air filter needs oil

Most Singaporean dun hv the place to DIY bike or dun enjoy DIY. I love to do some things myself but too technical, usually need a friend to come in n help

here read: http://www.dansmc.com/aircleaner.htm

Not all air filters need to be re-oiled but many filters needs the oil to work properly especially like KnN n most foam filters.

Unless u are using paper filtes then those are throw n buy new ones.

N yes true most singaporean don't really DIY but it does not hurt to have knowledge and maybe develop some interests on the machine

so that in case u have problems, u know what to do and do not just throw it to the mechanic and let him quote u $2000 dollar bill

for your own ignorance.

Like TS he queries on his problem n seeks help from forummers here so that is a step foward to him. I've known ppl who never in the course of their ownership of the bike for 1-1.5years has changed any engine oil n coolant was all gunked up to almost gel like when it broke down. He just don't know what happened. This is just plain ignorance.

I don't have a voltmeter connected to my bike just a USB charger which I tap from my ignition so that it only turns on when i turn the bike on.

U better check the the wiring properly where the voltmeter should be tapped from, cos if u miswire it could play around with your rectifier or even CDI n then the bike electricals are all shorted n bike cannot start anymore.

Best u get the manuals wiring diagram n study it first.

Actually the heat came from my bike left crankcase cover (roller that side). As there is a tube coming out from the front cover . Cheer

I still using those paper air filter, yet to change to better 1 but not sure if there is much difference.

My friend just bought a cub, the previous owner was a female rider. During her 10 years of riding, she only changed tires once n chain once. She claimed to service regularly. Then my friend took over the bike, the tires were in extremely bad condition, the shape is not round at all n surface were hard. Then when changed EO, the oil was so thick n black like glue. Not sure how she can ride in this condition but she is not alone.

I just DIY changed 3.5L of EO n oil filter on my bike yesterday. It was very messy n a little tiring but it was satisfying DIY for my own bike

Bro, I hope to be able to provide the answers you seek.

The hot air that you speak of, in aircooled scooters there is a fan usually on the right side before the exhaust. This fan draws cool air in and channels it into a shroud(plastic surrounding the engine) and then expels through an exit.

Please make sure that the hot air "leaking" that you speak of is not just the hot air being expelled normally.

As for oil in the airbox and filter, I believe you are using stock paper type filter right(no oil)? Usually on modern scooters there is a tube from the crankcase breathing port to the air box. This is to recycle the fumes given off by the engine oil in the crankcase into the airbox to be burnt again, instead of being vent into the environment as pollutant. However as the engine wears the piston ring may not be able to keep the all the pressure in the combustion chamber and leak into the crankcase creating an extraordinary positive pressure in it.

The extra pressure may force some engine oil into the airbox. Some scooter have a one way valve to keep oil in and fumes out, if has failed it may exhibit the same symptoms.

For the engine oil leaking, it may be a gasket, oil seal or copper washer.

In all honesty, there is a limit an untrained personnel can do. If you are trying to save a buck or two, it may not be worth the trouble to fix it yourself than to have it checked by a professional. If you are doing DIY out of interest, forge ahead but invest in the proper tools.

My 2 cents.

Scooter Tuning Is Not A Crime.
