THE SPECS

The NT700V is a new entry-level sport-touring bike for the U.S., but that doesn't mean it's actually new. For several years, Honda has sold this bike in Europe as the Deauville. At the heart of this 571-pound motorcycle is a 680-cc 52-degree V-twin with fuel injection. This is the same engine Honda uses in the wild DN-01 motorcycle scooter hybrid . It's paired to a five-speed manual transmission and routes 60 hp to the rear wheel with a maintenance-free shaft drive, like most Hondas.

The 58.1-inch wheelbase chassis uses a 41-mm front fork with 4.5 inches of travel and a preload adjustable rear shock with 4.8 inches of travel. The seat height is a relatively low 31.7 inches. The NT700V comes in two flavors—one with ABS, like our fully loaded $12,273 test bike; and one without that costs less than $10,000. Both wear dual 296-mm discs up front and a single 276-mm disc in the rear.

Because this is a touring bike, the fuel tank is a generous 5.2 gallons with a 0.9-gallon reserve—plenty for running more than 200 miles between fill-ups. There's a handy fuel gauge in the instrument cluster too, which takes the guesswork out of fuel stops.

The NT700V comes with standard hard saddlebags that have a handy horizontal pass-through, so you can carry longer items—like cattle prods or tennis rackets, depending on what you do with your leisure time—that otherwise would be left back at the ranch.

History

In 1998, the NT650V Deauville made its debut with a fully integrated three-quarter fairing and panniers to distinguish it from the Revere on which it was based. The engine was also re-tuned for stronger low-to-midrange torque. To further suit its touring role, the fuel tank capacity was enlarged to 19 litres.

Despite some minor additions in 1999, the motorcycle remained unchanged until it was revamped in 2002. Larger-capacity panniers (left capacity increased from 18 to 24 litres; right capacity increased from 16.7 to 19.5 litres) with more secure cover latches and hinges were fitted. The engine was overhauled with lighter pistons and other engine modifications to reduce vibration. A catalytic converter was fitted to ensure compliance with the stricter EU emissions laws. A Combined Braking System was fitted and the front brakes were upgraded to 3-piston calipers.

Aside from some minor additions in 2004, the motorcycle remained largely unchanged until its relaunch as the NT700V in 2006 when the taller windscreen became manually adjustable for height and the larger capacity engine, now fuel injected, provided an approximately 20% power increase. Also revised were the instrument panel and addition of optional ABS brakes.

DV NT700 2010 model: Motorised windscreen.

Bro BigFatFish, can you tell us more about your Honda Deauville NT650V.

Hi bros and Deauvilleans, reason I bought this bike. Transport when I am in sg during my short breaks. Easy to maintain etc. all others bikes give up cuz no time for now.

When did buy it? Bought it 3 mths plus ago

How's the ride so far? Ride as been quite satisfactory and learning a lot about this style of riding.

What did you do to it after buying it. Full servicing , make sure internally all ok first. Recently a problem occurred made the bike fc bad. Finally resolved and consumption seems much better. Waiting for a short ride later and top up petrol again to confirm.

Anything more that you need to do? Lots more to do. Full set fairings , boxes repairs etc

What do you like about the Deauville? Good fc compared to my previous bikes. Very nimble bike cuz I used to ride purely chopper style bikes. High speed is nice too.

Have you any questions to the Deavilleans - they are all very friendly and helpful.

Can't wait to meet the rest of Deauvilleans before I leave.

Life's too short, you may leave anytime, think of now, just do it.
