Why 525? Engine Capacity?

Patsy Quick's feet don't reach the ground when on board her Paris-Dakar machine, the KTM 525 EXC MECA rally bike.

She don't ?

Can she on the LC640? It's a LC640, rite? Judging from the picture, I think she can.

On my way back from the Mei Mei infested area (Amoy St), saw a Orange 950 Adventure turning into Capital Plaza, nice exhaust, as loud as a HD.

My guess, why she using 525 is becos this yr Dakar has speed limit ard 150km/h for safety reason(due to death of Meoni). I think 525 would suit her better and could reach that speed. My guess also would be weigh issue and the brutal power of 660. A UK guy name Extance(not sure of spelling) is riding a CRF450X this year after using XR650 the year before...

I am a Yammi supporter but not sure about off road bike, guess this is the 2WD and if it is, it is even more yammy.

Sadly, we don't see such good bike in Spore.

This coming Dakar is more of a back to basic approach, less dependent on GPS, more on navigational skills. The routes chosen will be more technical in nature, fuel stop more controlled thus suiting lighter, frugal and nimble machine. Hence a 525 will be more suitable than the all out thrust of a 660. By the way, twins are allowed, but limited to 450cc, who build these anyway http://www.advrider.com/forums/images/smilies/patch.gif

Another controversy surrounding Meoni's crash was that riders spent more time watching their GPS and road book rather than where they're going because of the heafty fines imposed if the rider was to exceed the imposed speed limit by even 1km/h.

Speed limit in racing..... now thats a novel idea..... like telling MJ that he's not allowed to jump higher than 1 meter when he takes a shot....... sigh...... http://www.advrider.com/forums/images/smilies/iamwithstupid.gif

This article from Motorcycle Daily posted on July 1, 04 gave it another spin:

No Big Twins for Dakar Rally In '05

By Alex Edge

Dakar rally sanctioning body ASO (which incidentally also organizes the Tour de France and many other bicycle events in Europe) has released the rules for the '05 Dakar rally, and the motorcycle section contains something of a shocker. Open-class twin-cylinder motorcycles (like the 950cc KTM V-Twins) are banned for 2005. In fact, the rules disallow any twin-cylinder motorcycle displacing over 450cc. The premier motorcycle classes will now consist of the Open class singles (like the KTM 660) and the new 450cc single class.

This surprising decision could mean a lot for the future of Dakar. Obviously the organizers felt that the Open class was becoming a "one-make" race, as no manufacturer seemed inclined to step up with a bike that could seriously challenge KTM. If you read yesterday's article, you will see that KTM is attempting to draw American attention to the Dakar by training and supporting a "Team USA"-type effort in 2005. By aligning their racing classes more closely with those of American off-road racing, perhaps the ASO can attract more attention from American off-road racing superstars. And if the American stars come, the major Japanese manufacturers come with them.

So could the decision to re-emphasize the 450cc class start a boom in participation in the Dakar's motorcycle classes? All the Japanese manufacturers should have 450cc four-stroke MX bikes available by next year, and Honda also has the XR650 (already the most dominant bike in American desert racing in the hands of Johnny Cambell and Steve Hengeveld), which could perhaps challenge KTM's 660 in the Open class. Whether the Big Four will bite remains to be seen, but this seems like a smart move by the ASO.

Yes indeed, its about market share. How could you have one of the toughest race in motorsport without giving the BIG 4 (Big 1 actually) an exclusive chance of winning, it would be an outrage, sarcasm most intended http://www.advrider.com/forums/images/smilies/ace.gif
