I encountered this problem yesterday.

I switch on the mains, then press the 'On' button on the case, the power supply fan would run for about 1 second then stop. The CPU fan continues running though. The computer would not boot up and this might be because the power supply fan is not running.

Anyone has any suggestions as to what the issue might be here?

Computer is an Acer desktop bought in 2007.

Core 2 Duo 1.8something GHZ

2 GB Ram

I'm thinking it might be a power supply issue.

Looks like a dead PSU man. Or wires that have been shorted.

Try to reconnect all the wires again. If it doesnt work, try it with another PSU.

Thanks guys! Will be getting a new PSU later. Tried disconnecting wires but nothing works. I even got a jolt from case of the damn PSU yesterday night while troubleshooting.

Tried the PSU. Computer still doesn't work.

However, now, all the fans run. The light that indicates the computer has started on the case appears now but goes away after 1 second. Monitor starts up then switches off after 1 second. The green light on the monitor then turns to orange.

GFX card fan is running by the way. Don't think it's that problem. I tried a different ram slot and it didn't make any difference.

Don't want to spend money trying to figure out the problem. Does anyone have any contacts who can come to my place and pick the computer up. Or maybe a good reliable shop in SLS?

Try a few test......

Remove the GFX..... does it beep???

Yes= GFX is spoilt.

No,Remove both the ram..... does it beep???

Yes = Ram spoilt.

If both don`t beep, Please proceed to get new Com....(Motherboard/CPU chip is spoilt. Not worthy to replace.)

Hope my 2 cent can help.....:cheeky:

Tried to remove the ram, no beep, GFX no beep either. I even removed both. No beep at all. I removed the processor. No beep either.

Another thing I've noticed is that the fan on the processor is not constant. It runs, then loses power, slows down, then gets faster, then stops completely. Then it restarts again.

Guess I need a new computer!

Yup it has the buzzer, but it's not buzzing.

I got a Cooler Master. $55. 400something watts. I was told it could support up to a quad core processor should I upgrade.

My old PSU was only 275watts.

Roger that. I would reuse most parts though. Will have to get a new mother board, a new chip and a GFX card. Ram upgrade would sound good too.

Yea, could be a short in your on/off switch. Tell you what, you try to disconnect your pwr switch, then you short the jumpers to turn on your system. See whether its the same problem. It could also be your CPU heatisnk is not tightly/properly mounted on your cpu.

Before you decide to go on a shopping spree, why don't you try replacing a POWER switch? Either replacing it or swapping with the RESET switch (which is a momentary switch too) for testing purposes at least, should give you some idea.

A similar behaviour was observed in the past and remedied simply by replacing a switch.

Hope that would do the trick for you too, mate.

Good luck.

WE'RE NOT HERE FOR A LONG TIME, WE'RE HERE FOR A GOOD TIME.

Tried the switch, no issues there.

Brought the CPU to SLS and they diagnosed a motherboard problem.

Waited 2 hours and $130 later, I have a working computer. The only problem now is the Cooler Master PSU is some sort of an overkill and the sound of the fan whirring is so loud it's killing me!

Thanks for the help! Will see how long it lasts before I update this thread again.

Cheers!

Good for you bro!

The thing is that, we can only help you to a certain level. We are not physically there to assist you. Hope you understand man.

A mobo problem is hard to diagnose(hence the 2 hrs) and i would classify it as a deeper problem. :)
