hi folks.

am considering getting a naked bike for class 2a and wish to install a windshield. i noticed many different types installed on local bikes and am wondering how they perform. am interested in the following:

1. which windshield did you get?

2. where and how much roughly did you get it for?

3. did it affect the handling of your bike?

4. did it deflect the wind over your helmet?

thanks a lot for your time. appreciate all responses.

there are 2 kinds of windshield, for racing (to cut thru wind efficiently) and for touring, to eliminate head on wind draft on yourself)

the cutting between this 2 category of windshield is different.

brands i know of are Givi (made in italy), MRA (made in germany) and Ermax (used by valentino rossi)(made in france)

prices are $150 and above.

Class 2B - 26/03/2009

Class 2A - 01/06/2010

Class 3 - 10/07/2009

Rides(s)

1) Honda TA150 - 20/04/2009 to 31/08/2014

2) Honda CB400 Ver S - 12/07/2014 to ???

Can you comment on your experience using the screen? I mean, do you feel any wind when riding on your super4 when traveling beyond 80kph? Do you feel warm when riding below 40kph? I am trying to determine what would be the best compromise when it comes to windshield height and width too.

thanks in advance!

yes.. it will be slightly warmer a bit.. i dun think it makes a lot of diff between 80 or 40..

with the windshield up.. i ever tried putting my hand infront of my helmet to see where the wind flows.. and it sorta hit my visor directly.. upwards..

some wind still come in via the arms area.. but from the tank to chest area.. there is little windflow.

Thanks for the responses!

The height of the windscreen should be below your eye level. You should be looking over the screen, not through it. Otherwise, the screen could get dirty from bugs or rain and will block vision. The wind will deflect upwards and if adjusted properly over your helmet.

Can try wind vest.

Hi Scubasimon,

Windshield is interesting because it is about aerodynamics. That is, it is dynamic--airflow varies from shield to shield design, varies across bike models, varies across rider size, varies even at different riding speed.

So my recommendation is to be very specific--nail down on the bike you are getting and your windshield you are getting. Find someone similar in size. And ask for opinion.

Most windshield for naked bikes deflect wind off the chest--very few can deflect above the helmet.

Deflecting wind off the chest is good enough if riding below 150 and gives good ventilation in s'pore/city pace riding.

Deflecting wind off the helmet is not always good. It is good if want to ride above 150 and you don't like wind blast. But in city pace riding, the tall windshield cuts off a good deal of ventilation and can get very hot.

So it is a trade-off. The only solution is to find a suitable compromise; or to find a variable adjustable windshield.

Even if one has decided on chest-level deflection windshield, one has to really ride with the windshield or ask someone who has ridden with the exact windshield on the exact bike across varying speeds.

Because almost similar but still varying factors, can create very different effect, some of which is uncomfortable. Example: some windshields can cause wind buffering at the helmet level--ride feels helmet shaking, a lot of on-off noise (but do not expect chest level windshield to remove wind noise).

Also, note exactly where the main deflected air stream will hit the rider's frontal part of the helmet.

Too high up on the helmet and rider has to strain neck to steady head. Too low down on the helmet and you get a lot of wind blast still. Optimum is somewhere between eye and chin bar level.

Also consider the strength of the windshield. Wind blast at >100 is very strong. Some wind shield vibrates more than others. Some may even crack from prolong use.

Also note the edge of windshield. Some do not have the rounded edge--so rain water more likely will drip onto the windshield, somewhat degrading vision through during rain. This may be a minor factor to some.

Lastly, the colour of the windshield. Please choose a nice colour and match it with your bike :)

Hi Scubasimon,

Windshield is interesting because it is about aerodynamics.....

Thanks endlessloop for the valuable insights! I am looking for a windshield too, and found the given information very useful. Cheers~

From Honda's manual:

The motorcycle presents you a challenge to master the machine, a challenge to adventure. You ride through the wind, linked to the road by a vehicle that responds to your commands as no other does...

I am still looking for a windshield that can clear my helmet. Think the helmet presents some unique challenges as it's a hornet ds with the peak. Anyone has a good shield to recommend that can clear this helmet?

Scubasimon,

What purpose are you looking for in a windshield? Less wind on chest or to eliminate helmet buffeting?

For me, wanted less wind on chest to make the long rides less tiresome. Never had any issues with helmet buffeting. May need to try different helmet.

helmet buffeting is my big problem...don't really wanna change helmets lah :p

Found the kind used by the civil defense fire bikes. A major pain to mount but works great :-)
