Saufi, if you want to flick like a MotoGP star, go with the 180, otherwise stick to the standard 190.

Rapper, the Power Race front lost 200kpa after a week and the rear lost 90kpa. I thought boy didn’t set the pressure right. I set the pressure myself last week and checked this morning, the front lost 70kpa while the rear lost 50kpa. I should get a new set.

I’m going up to Ipoh this Friday, Anyone riding up North this Friday morning?

Ya sure Chilly, It was also nice meeting you, thanks for the treat. Safety gear was worn to allay my mum's fear of me riding a big bike ha ha but only in the night, afternoons are still too damn hot, once I worn during the day, I sure got giddy due to the heat. Please do call me for any Planned JB trips, I sure on if I am free.

However, they're just your regular delivery guys during day time. They cannot afford to drink Sturbucks, so they just top up with $5 and they can have a whole night of fun.

Wah Tashi, the picture's smashed up head, darn scary, must be not wearing a helmet. As told to Chilly last weekend, recently there was a very famous American Football star Ben R from Steelers who worn without a helmet riding a hayabusa as it is legal in some parts of USA, he got banged from the side and his only injuries is a broken jaw and broken cheek bone so if he worn a full face helmet, there will be no injury at all. Valentine Rossi darn good yesterday in German Motogp race. Its been a while since it was so exciting with 4 riders challenging for the lead at the end.

Been constantly swapping rear tyres between the 2 sizes you mentioned.

190 has good straightline stability but the bike corners like a pig... very hard to bring it down.

180 tends to be a little bit shaky above 240 KMH, but the bike leans over easily and hangs tight in the corners. Plus point is, because of the sharper profile, you lay a bigger footprint on the tarmac when leaned over unlike the 190s.

I personally prefer 180, currently on my bike now. I like the more rubber on the ground in the high speed corners.

Unless you do track alot, might as well stick to 190s. Makes the bike look good from the back.

:offtopic: Dun pray pray ok... today at PG, tweety64 was following me around the track.

Sadly she could not unglue her butt from the seat or else she would be dragging her knees through some of the corners.

Eh?? Brother-In-Law, pray tell how a 180 tire with 8 to 10mm LESS surface width, can lay down a larger contact patch, compared to a 190?

Also, please tell how a 180 section width, meant for 5.5inch width rims, will become sharper profile when spread out over a 6 inch-wide rim?

Maybe he's applying Raptor science, not rocket science.

LD, try to get at driving centre. Old riders like us, we've thrown away those books a nong nong time ago.

MotoGP Sepang is 10 Sep this yr. Plan to take 8 Sep off as well. Should start making plans and book hotel soon. Let's book a suite at the Hilton and crash everybody in. I maybe able to get corporate rates.

Looking at last year's pix, dang happening.

I was planning to sell off my 06 this month, and trade in my 04 for a F4 1000R. But decided not to. I'm having too much fun on the 06. Should also wait till Sep when new bikes are introduced. Maybe should try K7.

After 2 track sessions, the tyres always look kinda vee- shaped to me, sides worn off but centre still like new. Be it 190 or 180, they all suffer the same fate.

Vee shaped (V) means smaller contact patch when bike is upright, but big contact patch when bike is lean hard over. Call it Raptor's theory or whatever you want, but I have done enough of track time to put in my 2 cents worth.

I dare not argue with my Bro-in-law. He is the MAN.

PS - anyone going to PG track tomorrow?? I will be riding an Aprilla RS125. Here's your chance to blow the crap outta me. thumb:

tweety, you are a very good student. You learn fast.

But what I think is most important is having a safe first time outing on the track, it makes it memorable and fun.

One of the guys from the group you were with took this video of me at Turn 12. Why they call it Ah Gong Chicane when it is a corner?

The grinding sound you hear is not my footpegs scraping the ground but my kneesliders with titanium inserts, that's why you saw sparks in some of the corners.

I'd like to forward some views, to help correct what I deem as popular misconceptions:

a. A 180 section rear tire will enable faster turn in than a 190. This used to be true even just 5 years ago, for litre bikes. Today, this no longer holds water, with 190/55 section tires available. Metzeler Rennsports and Racetecs, as well as Pirelli Supercorsas are the only models in that specification, that were expressly designed to replicate the circumference of a 180/50 tire on a 5.5 inch rim, without the unwanted side-effects of fitting a 190/50 or a 180/50 on a six-inch wide rim. Plus, you get an additional 4mm of grip on either extreme edge of the tire at max lean angles, compared to a 180 tire. Michelin’s Power Race only comes in a 190/50 configuration, but those who have used these tires inform me that they work just like the Metzelers, leading me to conclude that the Power Race may have a higher section height than is listed.

b. A 190 section tire gains straightline stability at the expense of fast turn-in and cornering stability. Again, this used to be the case, but not today for the same reasons above.

c. Tire profile is determined by the section width, i.e. a 180 has a sharper profile than a 190. There is more to this statement. Tire profile is determined by a number of factors, such as construction (the number of plies, material and the way they are laid) and compound. In general, more plies add to a tire's weight, stiffness and heat buildup (as the individual cords rub when the tire flexes), but those plies can be laid at different angles to create both stability and grip. Different materials can be used to vary the strength and weight of any individual ply, and the cords can be wound in a number of different ways to subtly vary its profile and its effect. This is true of any sized tire.

d. Today’s track tires present a larger contact patch at full lean. A triangular profile tire will allow quicker turn-in, as the bike wants to fall into turns. This type of profile will present a bigger contact patch at a certain lean angle, as the tire surface angles away from the point and is relatively flat. But once that tire is leaned over onto its side, a lot of effort is required to lift it back up, resulting in higher steering effort (older Dunlop D208s and BT 001s come to mind). A rounded profile tire will provide more moderate steering effort with a better ability to make midcorner corrections, as there is no flat spot at any particular lean angle. Conversely, there is no portion of the tire that gives a larger contact patch for better grip. Most of the track-based tires available to us in Singapore (Racetecs, Supercorsas and Power Race tires) fall into the “rounded profile” category, so unless you still use “pointed profile” tires, you aren’t getting more contact patch at bigger lean angles.

Something also needs to be said about rim size. Most peeps tend to ignore this, at their own peril. While fitting larger sized tires on smaller rims (beyond their intended specifications) is dangerous (such as deliberately fitting a 190 section tire to a 5.5 inch rim as used by most 600cc bikes), there are subtle differences when going the other way (fitting 180 width tires on 6 inch rims). Many club racers in the MSS round fit 180 tires on their R1s, CBR 1000s and GSXR 1000s and they don’t seem to face any difficulties. They do it because they want a lighter tire with faster turn in. Well, all I can say is that their conclusions are based on past wisdom, that might no longer hold true. Many of these same racers will benefit from the additional grip provided by the wider 190/55 section tires, that have the same profile as their 180/50 counterparts on smaller 5.5inch rims.

I am indebted to Dunlop and Michelin, as well as Motorcyclist and Sportrider Magazines for some of the information here. Please feel free to agree or disagree with what I have written.

Cheers.

Throttle / Rapper, you guys keep going with the brudder brudder foreplay, everyone’s gonna get a stiffy. Wahahaha. Sorry, I couldn’t help it.

Good stuffs on the suspension settings and tires. :thumb:

Ronald, read my amateurish review on the R1 a couple of pages back.

JB, am still looking for a softcopy version. I am looking for digitized version of everything to free up space in my room. I hope things are sorted out for your Blade. When are you gonna join us and show us your new jacket?
