ALGIERS (Algeria) - A BABY was found alive by rescuers after spending four days in a pool of mud following flash floods that killed at least 41 people in central Algeria this week, a local official said on Sunday.

 

'It's a miracle, really a miracle to find it alive after all this time,' the town governor of Ghardaia, Yahia Fahim, told national radio.

 

The state-run APS news agency said the 4-month-old baby appeared in good health after being discovered on late Saturday and had been handed to a family while authorities looked for its parents.

 

Journalists in Ghardaia, where most of the victims drowned, said none of them had seen the baby since it was saved.

 

But the governor said its photo would be posted in all local media for the family to recognise it. It was not clear from his comments whether the baby was a boy or a girl.

 

Authorities did not say how they knew the baby had been in the mud since the flooding.

 

The reported rescue came as authorities confirmed at least 41 deaths in the floods caused by torrential rains this week in this usually arid region.

 

In addition to 33 casualties already reported in and around Ghardaia, two more people drowned in the adjacent district of Ourghla and four died farther to the north in the town of Tebessa, some 600 km east of Algiers, APS said.

 

Authorities say massive rescue efforts are ongoing in the zone and that emergency measures have been taken to prevent epidemics from spreading through polluted waters.

 

Hundreds of troops and security services have deployed to prevent looting and help with recovery operations. Thousands of blankets, tents and food units were being handed out in Ghardaia, home to about 100,000 people.

 

Some 1,400 houses were severely damaged in this medieval town located in a long and narrow valley known as the M'zab, about 600 km south of the capital, APS said.

 

The M'zab is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site and lies on the edge of the Sahara, the world's largest desert.

 

Algeria's Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia was in Ghardaia on Sunday for an emergency cabinet meeting, APS said, dealing with emergencies including how to accommodate 12,000 students left without schools. -- AP

ROME - POPE Benedict XVI on Sunday kicked off a a seven-day, non-stop Bible reading marathon on Italian television.

 

The pope read for several minutes from the start of the Book of Genesis live from his apartments in the Vatican while other speakers read in the Basilica of Holy Cross in Rome.

 

In the next seven days and six nights, more than 1,200 people will read from the Bible until all 73 books of the Catholic edition is finished.

 

The second reader was from the Russian Orthodox Church and the third was an Italian protestant leader.

 

Others on the first night included Italian politicians and artists, among them Oscar-winning actor and director Roberto Benigni.

 

Tenor Andrea Bocelli sang between readings.

 

Rome's chief rabbi, Riccardo di Segni, had originally agreed to read immediately after the pope but pulled out of the event last month, saying it had become 'too Catholic'.

BARCELONA - THE world must act quickly if it is to brake an unprecedented die off of the Earth's animal and plant life that could have dire consequences for humans as well, top conservationists warned on Sunday.

 

'There is a clear sense of urgency,' Mr Valli Moosa, president of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and a former environment minister from South Africa, told the opening session of the World Conservation Congress here.

 

'We must push our conservation movement to step up to the 21st century challenges, and meet the twin menace of climate change and the degradation of ecosystems,' he said at the opening ceremony.

 

More than 8,000 ministers, UN officials, NGOs, scientists and business chiefs have gathered in the Spanish city of Barcelona to brainstorm for 10 days on how to slow the rate of species extinction and steer the world onto a path of sustainable development.

 

The congress, held every four years, will release an update on Monday of the benchmark Red List, deemed the global standard for conservation monitoring.

 

The 2007 edition already shows more than a third of 41,000 species surveyed are facing extinction: a quarter of all mammals, one out of eight birds, one out of three amphibians, and 70 per cent of plants.

 

The new biodiversity 'bible', compiled from the work of 1,800 scientists, is even grimmer, say researchers who took part in the effort.

 

Conservation work can no longer be confined to the narrow task of saving animals and plants from extinction, Nobel Peace laureate Mohammad Yunus told AFP before addressing the convention.

 

'Conservation of nature cuts across everything - the sustainability of the planet, of the lives of poor people, and the environmental degradation that is harming nations,' said Mr Yunus, who was awarded the Nobel for helping to spread the practice of microcredit for poor people around the world.

 

With 11,000 volunteer scientists and more than 1,000 paid staff, the IUCN runs thousands of field projects around the globe to monitor and help manage natural environments. -- AFP
