I am currently using Puig and I got it from Regina for $180.

Its quite comfortable but I have not test it at a higher speed yet. if you want better wind protection, paithorn has got a good screen.

Just took over bike from cql. Need to prep it for 3-Nation Charity Ride next week. Of course, after paying for the bike, my wallet is as dry as the Sahara Desert!

 

But a screen is a must that's why posting here. Asked Chiap Lee about the Givi A750 as seen on seanwu's bike.

 

The people there either said don't know or cannot fit. Are there any special models for the Roadster?

 

Checked the web for Puig but so far found only Sports bike model. Anyone has any pics?

 

Of course, original BMW would be perfect. US$200 seems very reasonable. Is it new? Again, any pics?

 

Time is running out so maybe get a cheap one first then start saving for a better one.

The above is the web for Puig USA web site, you can do a search for bike model and it will show you the screen you want. But please bear with it coz there is something wrong with the site, therefore it might not show anything. But if you really want, you can go down to regina and have a look. They use to have a set down there for display but I am not sure if they still display it or not and don't know if they are willing to let you see or not. Actual I saw it at the Regina sometimes back therefore I like it very much thus I do a search on the web for this brand.

Mine is a 2 pieces screen where you can slight the top piece up or down.

The price that regina quote is $190 and I was able to get it at $180 with installation. But I don't know if they still carry this model or not but no harm trying.

Yep. 2nd day with the BM and so-far loving it. Some quibbles, though.

 

1) Seat cover is crap. So smooth and hard I'm always sliding into the tank. This could be a worry in an emergency brake! :banana:

Couldn't get my bum to stay in the widest & most comfortable area. So will change the cover to a rougher material before too long.

 

2) Sometimes at traffic light, it took some time for the neutral light to appear when I shift to neutral. This caused me to think I wasn't in neutral & so kick to 1st gear to try again. Anyone else experienced this?

 

3) Experienced a few false neutrals when shifting to 2nd gear. Need a firmer foot action.

 

4) Still on gearbox. Sometimes when moving off, kicking down to first gear when the bike is stationary is difficult. Gear still remain in neutral. Need to rev a little then try again, resulting in a THUMP.

 

Overall, the bike is quite easy to ride. The rocking didn't cause me any problems. In fact, its quite fun to rock!

 

Regarding the screen, yes, the puig site looks rubbish. Only 1 miserable picture & its not even a BMW! Many times it just say no item available for this model.

Yar, I will definitely go down to Regina one of these days to take a look. But really don't to like to travel there. Traffic jam is terrible & no place to park. Carpark wardens also super 'on'.

I am not too sure abt R1100R but my R1150R is a dry cluth...so it is a little noisier... I do not have the problem of false neutral or delayed neutral though...

For Me, because I have set the seat level to the highest, therefore I don't have the slighting problem, but I do have problem with the seat especially the front part, my balls are always been sandwich between me and the seat.

I do have this problem, but you can try to shift it to the neutral position and then rev the throttle; or on first gear, press onto the gear lever and then let go at once to let the spring of the gear lever bring gear to neutral(But this is not advicable).

I do have this issue if change gear too fast and the leg does not really kick the lever up properly

I do have this issue and I am doing the same things as you did, but once the bike is warm up there is no such issue anymore.

I find that my current one is much better then the Givi screen I had.

My current one(Puig) is taller and thus gives me better wind protection, whereas for the Givi screen which I have, it gives me better wind protection more on the side of my body because the screen is wider then the Puig screen.

Comments is that I prefer the current one(Puig) but one thing I don't like is the securing point of the screen to the bike; there are only 2 points for securing.

If you can, try get a 4 point securing screen, coz I feel its more stable during high speed.

Heehee, don't mind me adding a few pointers since I had been with this baby for so long.

 

What I normally do when changing gear is to give the gear lever some pressure first. For example, if I shift upwards, I'll "kick up" first and while doing that, pull in the clutch a little and the gear would shift up. This is unlike a jap bike where I'll pull in the clutch first before kicking up. This gives a precise gear change for BMW bikes (at least for R1100 generation) and help preserve the clutch transmission system. Kris had also adviced not to pull in the clutch fully (and not to do "half-clutch" control for too long too).

 

Normally when stopping, I'll stop in first gear. Slight kick up (not the above method) should engage neutral and I'll slowly release the clutch to ensure it is in neutral. The neutral light is a bit slow.

 

Engaging first gear is usually not much of a problem if I use the method in para 2, even when cold. Shouldn't need to rev.

 

The method for changing gear is what I read from the internet after a few weeks with the bike. It is said to reduce the wear on the clutch plate (reduce time when the clutch slips) and give precise gear shifts. After some practice, it became second nature after a while.

 

Does all BMW riders do that?

I do not know of the pre-pressure on gear lever...however, I came across some articles on shifting gears without clutching in by putting pressure on the gear lever...I tried that , it worked but I do not like the jerky feeling so revert back to clutching to change gears....

 

 

I do not understand the "do not clutch in fully" part....this will supposedly prevent clutch slippages...

But I think changing gear without clutching in would damage the transmission.

 

I think the peculiarity of BMW transmission lies in its dry clutch mechanism, unlike Jap's wet clutch. I was told this keeps the engine oil cleaner for longer times between oil change.

 

I'm not an expert on the transmission mechanism, but I think when we clutch in fully, the plate attached to the engine and the plate attached to the wheel will have a bigger difference in speed. When the plates come into contact again when we release the clutch, there might be more friction created. By clutching in only a little and shift immediately with pre-pressure, the difference in speed between the 2 plates should be lessen and thus less slippage with less wear.

 

Don't know for sure though, maybe someone here can clarify.

AT certain RPM, you can shoft gear without clutching in and it will not be as bad as what you imagine...but then again, I personally do not like the feeling too.......

 

You are right abt the dry clutch vs engine oil statement... However if you do not fully clutch in, wouldn't you by itself causing slippages during every gear change? My honest question...
