Hi

I’m sure this has been asked before .

I’m coming to Singapore for around 18 months and would like to get a bike.

My UK licence is a full one ie unlimited and I’ve held it for over 15 years.

Can i ride 400cc plus bikes in Singapore and what do i have to do regarding the COE, I've noticed on eBay bikes that do not mention COE are these for export only or do they need an inspection then a new COE?

I don’t really want to get anything below 400cc ( i believe a popular size there)

Any help and pointers appreciated

Rob

Hi rob w

welcome to singapore. Because of ur long stay in Singapore, u will need to go down to Traffic Police HQ to apply for conversion of ur driving license. Watever class they will convert u to i'm nt so sure. We have 3 classes in the motorcycle driving license category.

They are:

Class 2b - motorcycles not exceeding 200cc

Class 2a - motorcycles between 201cc and 400cc

Class 2 - motorcycles above 400cc

COE is Certificate of Entitlement and its for every vehicles in Singapore, which is valid for 10 years since the first day of registration. You don't have to worry about COE if u purchase a 2nd hand bike, but it does affect the depreciation of the motorcycle. COE can be renewed after the first 10 years has expired, provided the bike is still in well maintained condition. You can find out more about COE or other matters regarding driving in Singapore at http://www.lta.gov.sg or http://www.onemotoring.com.sg. Hope u have a great time riding in Singapore, and we certainly hope you can join some of the groups here in our outings when u gotten ur bike.

Good Luck!

HONG

Welcome rob

As advised by HONG, the finer details will be confirmed after you convert your license and the bike you are eyeing on. Brand new, 2nd hand. If 2nd hand will depend on the age of the bike and thus your insurance and road tax differs. I have collegue and friends from UK. I believe that the road tax there is so much cheaper as compared to SG.

Anyway, anymore enquires will be gladly entertained.

WE ARE BASICALLY VERY FRIENDLY peepz here.....

Do a search on 'foreign license' and find lots of threads on the subject.

Simple answer. When you arrive, you must convert your license within 12 months or have to do the driving course just like anyone else. The conversion requires your passport, EP, and you must pass the written basic test.

By law, you are only entitled to a class 2b license which limits you to a 200 cc machine or less. However, I am aware of four people, me being one, who have managed to get an unlimited conversion. If you are older and have lots of large displacement bike experience, and you present it right, you can get an unlimited. Me, I've been riding for 30 years... my license was older than the young lady taking my application. And I brought a picture of me on my Valk in the US, plus my Motorcycle Foundation Safety course certificate, and I had the unlimited in about 30 seconds.

Bike COE's are very reasonable... in the neighborhood of $600 to $800 so the price quoted often includes the COE, especially for a private seller.

Road tax runs from about $70 for a small displacement bike, to $460 for my Valkyrie (1500 cc), and higher still for an 1800 Wing or 2300 cc Rocket.

thats a good move from u.. bringing a pic of urself on ur Valk... but i dun think thats the reason to them giving u a full class license... cos the bike in the pic could be somebody else right? it all depends on case by case basis

Yes sir, I think you have it exactly right. What Singapore doesn't want to see happen is a bunch of younger folk come over and kill themselves on a big sport bike... they may have ridden like maniacs back home... but who needs them here?

So, if you can demonstrate experience and maturity you have a better chance. I'm guessing that with 15 years experience, the OP is not 23 years old... and thus stands a chance at an unlimited if he can demonstrate his maturity.

Good luck in ur licence conversion! Once you're legal to ride here, you will need to get used to the traffic and err.. "manners" here. ALOT different then what you have experienced in the UK.
