Hi,

Just wonder if anyone tried using Ubuntu before?

If you wanna try, get it here: http://www.ubuntu.com

It is a free operating system based on GNU/Linux. Give it a try!

I'm proud to say that I have ditched Microsoft Windows for good for a stable and free operating system.

If you want, I think i have the CDs somewhere with me. I can burn a copy (its legal, no worries) and pass you a copy.

You can test and evaluate Ubuntu desktop without even installing. Just boot up the Live CD and test it out without a single thing installed on your PC.

Yups its very difficult to say the pros and cons of the software until you test it yourself. This is becaruse different people have different skill level.

Like for me, I am quite comfortable with any of the linux distro. Still learning though. Ubuntu is of coz easier to use. So try out yourself to see if you like it.

Using Live CDs is a good way to try out different flavors of linux. Find one that you are comfortable with. Only issue that I foresee that you would face is driver issue. Other than that, it should work the same way as the other distros.

For PCs, most distros are not a problem. Even for server editions.

But for laptops, some distros may have driver issues for specialized hardware.

I've burnt out my old Acer laptop running Fedora on it.

Why? The driver for the laptop's power management module (fan control) is not compatible and thus forgone.

Laptop heated up rather easily the time I used it and died unexpectedly.

Do a search on the forum to see if people have managed to install the particular distro you want (Ubuntu for one) on the model of laptop you are thinking of and check for any driver / hardware issues.

Another place you can check out for local KDE Ubuntu (or Kubuntu for short) knowledge is http://www.cripperz.sg

Its a portal run by a friend of mine who is a big Ubuntu fan. His room is like a DC command centre.

You can join the community and post all your enquiries and questions there.

Guys,

I'm done with Windows. I'm running Ubuntu fulltime. I am a member of Team Ubuntu Singapore (http://ubuntu.sg).

I'm looking for your experiences in using Ubuntu. Not to help me use Ubuntu. I am supposed to be the one helping.

Thank you.:)

Ahaha!

Congrats on leaving Redmond (as in Microsoft's Redmond HQ).

Can't share much Ubuntu desktop experiences with you coz I've played around with their server distros instead.

Deployed an NMS and a simple internal email server with one. No frills stuffs. I prefer to keep things simple as they're easier to fix when broken.

One of the things you need to remember with Ubuntu is the sudo part.

Nothing works without sudo.

LOL...

I'm not sure how you can do it, but try posting as attachment /var/log/kern.log and /var/log/syslog

If you could, post it at http://ubuntu.sg forum. Someone will be able to help you out.

Thank you.

Hi :)

As mentioned in the RXZ-Lovers thread, although i'm in Thailand i'm a full time Ubuntu user as well. Hardy Heron 8.04.1 (or 8.04.2? Not sure) on my home-made PC, a strngly modified Compaq Deskpro and another home-made "experimental" machine for testing stuff. No more Windows for me since April 2008.

I do the usual web surfing, e-mail, music listening and video watching but i also do video converting, mp3 editing and a little graphic/image editing, Ubuntu has all that is required, it's all 100% free and 100% legal to download, install on as many computers as one wishes and burn a dozen and a half CD's to give to friends.

Yes, Ubuntu runs right off the CD and includes an "Office" suite, e-mail software (that even "does" Hotmail!) and a lot more stuff, even more can be "installed" even when running the live CD. I was surprised that i could even "install" a better graphics driver to enable the Compiz-effects, reboot the machine and STAY in the live-CD environment with not a single byte written to the HDD, in fact that even works on a computer which does not HAVE an HDD! All it needs is a lot of RAM to do that, but my 2 GB were plenty sufficient, Ubuntu has very low demands and makes even older hardware "fly".

Ubuntu, like all Linux distros, is highly customizable - you can even tweak the colour of the text in buttons on the task bar :) Compiz adds a bunch of special effects which are real eye candy.

I LOVE Ubuntu :)

Kind regards.....

Thanh

Thank you for that great experience sharing!!

I hope Ubuntu has made your computing tasks much more fulfilling than before with less susceptibility to virus and spyware attacks. It has definitely made my life simpler and all the required applications are installed by default, and more can be installed with just a click of the right mouse button!:thumb:

Converted a colleague here at my office.

He is into audio mixing and has Macs for that purpose.

But what keeps putting him off is the price of purchasing a decent mixing software lke Pro Tools.

Until I gave him my newly-arrived Ubuntu via mail from Holland (can't be bothered to leave my laptop running overnight to download the ISO when I can order the CDs for free from Canonical) as well as links to some industrial-strength open-source and, very importantly, free digital audio wokstation software.

Now happily running Ubuntu on one of his older desktop.

Wow so many ubuntu users, i love ubuntu but sadly its not very "Game Freak" friendly just like all linux OS's. Wine is totally terrible at emulating games.
